About this project
Project Update! Base goal has been reached! New goal stretch of $6,500! So many thanks + love to everyone who helped make this project reach it's base goal! It happened more quickly than expected. Honestly, I actually had no idea as to what was going to happen with this. It continues to be suspense novel! As it is, I've set a new stretch goal, because I am beginning to weave some curious ideas in regards to the exhibitions down the road, but will keep those elements unwraps for now. As Joe Strummer hath said, the future is unwritten. If you feel that this project resonates with anyone in yr circuitries, please do send this page along to them. BIG love xoxod.
About the project
Hey there! I'm really excited to share my latest project with you. It's called the Sunrise Diaries. The project involves 7 wall-hanging scrolls that will narrate the journey of an artist discovering her creative voice. Each scroll will illustrate a stage in the journey: Initialization, Practice, Getting lost, Creating a new map, Leap of Faith, Learning, and most important to me, Community. The Community scroll wall hanging will be the centerpiece and the largest in size.
The spark for the Sunrise Diaries came from rediscovering a stack of journals I’ve written in and saved from my teenage years. As I reopened the journals, I laughed and was amazed by the feeling that I was reading the memoirs of a stranger. I marveled at the evolution of my handwriting. I am going to cut up the pages from these 15 years of writings (with a bow to the Cut-up Technique, pioneered by William S Burroughs + Brion Gysin) and integrate them into sumi-e/paint/ink/tea-stained layers (Rooibos + Earl Gray) in the wall hangings.
Why scroll wall hangings? I’ve chosen traditional Asian-style wall hangings as a medium for this work because they remind me of my childhood home. Ever since I was a little girl, I've marveled at the wall hangings that adorned the homes of my parents and relatives. I wondered about the stories the wall hangings depicted. I want to create my own scrolls to tell my own story.
Another goal for this campaign is to help establish a new model for how I and other creators can make their own independent artist residency.
I will document every aspect of the work’s process and will share with this journey with you via a regularly-updated blog. It is my hope that this project can serve as a map and inspire/encourage others on their own path towards creative actualization. Quite frankly, I just want more people all around me to make awesome creative stuff.
In essence, this project will be a thesis art show without actually involving grad school.
Upon completion of the work, I will exhibit the body of work in New York City and San Francisco.
I plan to complete the Sunrise Diaries project (and graduate!) in Fall 2013.
I will make a rough sketch of each scroll and create a scale mock-up out of paper. I will then design the trim (either out of fancy paper or fabric). My particular creative process is organic. Sometimes, I don't know exactly what is going to happen or what the end result will look like. Although I know from where I start, I’m not yet sure of what I will see along the way. See the mock-up below for an idea of what the outcome might be. Often, I end up surprising myself.
:: Questions ::
What will the money go to?
The funds will help carve out time + space for me to focus and jump into the work. The starting goal of $5,500 is the bare minimum for me to fulfill rewards, buy art supplies, and have a start into the project. If luck is by my side and I happen to raise above the goal amount, I will be able to put more time into the work and create what I envision for the final exhibitions. The specific details of the exhibitions shall be revealed as the project comes closer to completion.
I've dreamed up sweet rewards that are an intrinsic part of this project to bring you along with me on this journey. I wish to offer meaningful rewards with an emphasis on artifact with a personal touch, in contrast to mass production. I've set aside designated times to fulfill these Kickstarter rewards pre-residency. This pre-residency part of the story will also be documented and shared.
:: More details ::
Tell me more about the residency + reward fulfillment.
The Residency will commence mid-January 2013 in San Francisco/Bay area. The smaller rewards shall be worked on and sent out early 2013, or possibly earlier. The larger rewards will take more time (see estimated dates of delivery), but you will receive plenty of updates of my progress. These rewards will take time, but will be well worth it.
Who is doing all the amazing silkscreen printing?
All silkscreening is done by the esteemed Ray Cross, overlord of Bushwick Print Lab.
What will the scrolls be made of?
Rice paper, lacquered wooden dowels, fabric, sumi-e paint, acrylic paint, and pen/ink. Each scroll will be approximately 2' x 3.5'. The centerpiece scroll will be 3' x 4.5'.
What will the scrolls look like?
At this early stage, I can only provide mockups, process shots + renderings (see above). The final composition is part of the journey. I will post regular updates of progress so you can behold the blossoming of the work.
Why are you doing this?
Have you ever had a creative idea that had gripped your mind for many months, refused to leave you alone, and the only way to be free from it is to actualize it? That is what is happening. Also, I really hope to inspire others to take action on their own creative mindgrips.
Thank you so much for reading this far and for your support! Even if you cannot
contribute financially, it would be greatly appreciated if you can help by sharing this project with your networks and to those you feel may resonate with it. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions!
You have all my love and deep sea gratitude.

Risks and challenges
As mentioned earlier, the goal I've set will meet the bare minimum requirements to get the residency started after reward fulfillment. The more funding that is raised, the more awesome the art/rewards/final exhibitions will be!
I've always enjoyed a challenge. The Sunrise Diaries project (and reward fulfillment) will be an brilliant exercise in discipline, focus, and energy.
