Ground Breaker has grown over the past three years from a small gluten-free production brewery to a small gluten-free production brewery with its own gluten-free gastropub. We are now asking for your help to launch our 100% gluten-free beer in a 12 ounce can.
A smaller container size has been the most common request we have received from fans since shipping our first case of Pale Ale in December 2011. Since then canning has become far more accessible.
With this project we will begin canning two beers; our most popular beer IPA No. 5 and our newest beer, Olallie Ale. Olallie is our new 4.5% ABV beer that currently is only available through the pub in the 22 ounce bottle and on draught. Olallie was built from the beginning to be a canned beer.
This project will also allow us to filter our canned beers to reduce sediment that can’t be seen through the can that could diminish the canned beer drinking experience. To get canning up and running we will be purchasing canning gear and making a few necessary facility upgrades.
As with our bottled beers, GFCO (Gluten Free Certification Organization) will certify our canned beers, which requires an onsite visit from an auditor, an expense covered under this project. GFCO is the organization that allows us to use the recognizable “Certified GF” circle on our packaging.
The cans we plan to use are manufactured in Olympia, Washington. That means minimal travel expenses to be present for the mandatory press check and lower shipping costs.
For many of the perk packages we have created project specific art (made by local artist Michelle Nguyen!) that will be featured on stickers, t-shirts, and sweatshirts (size information coming soon, final colors may be slightly different).

Receive an invitation to the canning release party in the brewery with appetizers created by Ground Breaker’s Chef, Neil Davidson.
Chef Neil Davidson, of our gastropub, will travel to your home and cook a delicious custom dinner for you and three other people. (Travel distance limited to Seattle, Bend, Pendleton, or anywhere else within 200 miles of Portland)
Your name will used on a To-Be-Determined summer seasonal. Examples “Bill’s Berry Ale” or “Peggy’s Persimmon.” It happened to homebrewing author and teacher Denny Conn and now it can happen to you.
Finally, for the super-fan we have the complete package that gets you ready to enjoy Ground Breaker in your home. In addition to a full set of Ground Breaker glassware, shirts, stickers, koozies, and many other perks, you get a dual faucet Beverage-Air kegerator, wrapped to match the Ground Breaker truck, set up to pour two different 1/6bbl kegs. We promise it will look better than the one in this image and that it will have dual faucets.

Risks and challenges
The purpose of this project is to expand our existing brewery’s packaging options beyond the existing 22 ounce bottle and 1/6bbl keg to another existing, accessible, and recognizable beer package, the 12 ounce can. This project is very low risk because we are working with established and reputable canning companies who have specialized experience working with microbreweries. Canning for craft and microbreweries has risen in popularity and has become commonplace.
