Now in its 8th year, the Junebug ArtFest is itself a work of art: it features 150+ visual and performing artists who participate in open air exhibits, window galleries, live music, interactive art events and open-mic sessions. In its prior seven years, the ArtFest has grown exponentially, both in the numbers of attendees as well as participating artists, who have evolved from primarily local performers and artists to visual artists and musicians from neighboring states.
The Junebug is a completely non-profit event…the all-volunteer planning team begins with a budget of $0 and ends with $0. Advertising and printing costs, along with materials, equipment rental and artist lecture fees are raised through sponsorship from local businesses in our small town.
The Junebug Planning Committee has assessed our past success and future prospects and would like to raise the level of the ArtFest “a notch or two.” The 2015 event will feature the following activities:
1) Annual Junebug Sculpture – Graphic arts educator, illustrator and designer Lauren Rabinowitz (AKA Lauren the Cartoon Goddess) will create the signature “Junebug Sculpture,” which presides over the month-long event. Its unveiling on Friday, June 5th will signal the official start of the ArtFest.
2) 3D Chalk Art –Anthony Cappetto, an internationally travelled street artist, will create a unique exhibit using 3D illusionary art for the festival.
3) Juried Window Gallery Competition – This series of storefront displays leverages downtown window space to showcase the work of established artists throughout the month of June; Museum Directors, Gallerists, and other professionals in the visual arts are invited to tour the Galleries and award prizes.
Our hope is that Kickstarter can help us take our ArtFest to the next level by raising additional funds, which will be used solely for event-related costs.
We hope that you will put the Metuchen Junebug ArtFest on your “must visit” list for 2015. We would love to have you not only help make this event happen with your donation but also join us for this amazing celebration of creativity of all types!
Risks and challenges
For the Junebug ArtFest, we need to coordinate many moving parts, ensure the artists and performers show up to their designated locations, and hope that the artists and store owners work well together. Our all-volunteer planning committee is very dedicated to putting together a high-class, fun art festival, and we are in constant communication between all parties so that if an issue does arise we can address it quickly.
In addition, we are at the mercy of the weather, as the festival will go on “rain or shine.” If it does rain, we have indoor back-up locations for performers, and the decision rests with the visual artists as to whether or not they still choose to show their work outdoors. For this year’s 3D street art exhibit, we plan on covering the art in the case of rain. Luckily, the month of June typically has warm, sunny weather in NJ, so we always just keep our fingers crossed!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
