What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

The Made of Mars Journey
The Made of Mars Journey

We are explorers!

Humans have been to the Moon and our spacecrafts have explored the solar system. Now is the time to launch a sustainable future beyond Earth.

This journey will be the greatest challenge of our lives, requiring dedication and innovation. Already, many organizations are hard at work on the technology to create this future - but they can not do it alone. This must be a journey for all humanity.

The Journey to Mars and beyond will require us to solve many important challenges, ranging from better rockets, medical advancements and technological innovations. Made of Mars will target two challenges to this journey:

Challenge #1: We must learn to build locally in Space.

Solution: Made of Mars will learn to transform the minerals and materials that we know are on Mars, the Moon and asteroids throughout the solar system into everything that we need to survive and thrive beyond Earth.

Challenge #2: The journey to space must be accessible to everyone.

Solution: Made of Mars will use these Space materials to create common products that can be used today. By design, these products will put the Journey to Mars in your hands - a reminder that everyone can be part of this journey.

Decades of orbiters, rovers and meteorite research has taught us about the materials of Mars.

We will start this effort with the most common and widespread of these materials, volcanic basaltic rock.

We can transform basalt rocks into threads and fabrics. From these, Made of Mars will learn to make the things we will need for a future in space.

This effort will require design, engineering and innovation. A Journey that begins today with your support of Made of Mars.

These rewards are created to put the materials of Mars into your hands.

We designed rewards to be useful, ones that might lead to what future explorers will use on Mars. We also wanted them to be mobile and attractive so that you can proudly show off your support for Space Exploration.

The rewards consist of a computer laptop sleeve and two wallet designs that feature volcanic basalt fabric panels. The use of this material will teach us how to work with the materials of Mars and are designed to connect you with the journey to Space.

Basalt will be critical for building on Mars and beyond, but it can also build a better life on Earth now.

Compared to other materials, basalt is more sustainable to produce and recycle. It does not deplete cropland the way that cotton does. It does not use oil, the way that polyester and plastics do. It does not leach chemicals when mined or discarded, the way that metals do. If it is discarded, it will return to the geologic cycle as natural materials should. It can be re-melted and reused, and is created through constant eruptions around the world.

Basalt Sustainability
Basalt Sustainability

In a future when resources like basalt can be mined from asteroids, basalt products will allow us to have material comforts with minimal environmental impact on Earth. Basalt will provide a pathway beyond Earth while building a more sustainable future here.

The final design is still evolving but will feature basalt fabric panels and be optimized for Space style and the materials of Mars exploration.

Our laptop SpaceCase is designed to highlight your passion and investment in Space Exploration.

The SpaceCase will prominently display a basalt-fabric paneling exterior and a soft fleece interior to protect your computer. We are offering these for 13in and 15in laptops. Once we are ready for production, we will contact you for the size specification of your order.

The final design is still evolving and may change from what is shown here. It will still feature the basalt panels and be optimized for Space design and materials.

Supporters and one guest will have the opportunity to join Made of Mars founder, Dr. J.R. Skok, on an expedition to three of the most iconic Mars analog environments on Earth.

Expeditions will tour and sample the volcanic landscapes that will be used to develop future Made of Mars products and technology. The expeditions will allow you to experience the Mars analog geology that has trained a generation of planetary scientists, engineers and astronauts.

The Mojave Desert in Southern California has a long legacy as a Mars Analog. Its desert landscape and volcanoes are a close compositional and geomorphic match to what we will encounter on Mars.

This reward will support a four-day expedition of the desert geology of the Mojave. We will sample basaltic rocks from several volcanic centers to compare to what we know is on Mars. We will visit the key Mars analog features of the Mojave, including volcanoes, playa lakes, sand dunes and desert pavements, while learning how each teaches us about Mars.

Mauna Kea, Hawaii
Mauna Kea, Hawaii

No place in America is as connected to its volcanoes as are the islands of Hawaii.

It is a key training ground for planetary explorers to understand volcanic landscapes and a test bed for Lunar and Martian technology. Basalt rocks make up most of the island and is continually replenished by active eruptions.

Hawaiian Lava Field
Hawaiian Lava Field

This reward is for a five-day expedition to the Big Island and focusesIc on the volcanic history and how it compares to Mars. The experience will include exploration of Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and lava tubes. We will learn about the diversity of volcanic landforms and how these materials can be transformed into the building blocks for Mars.

Iceland from above
Iceland from above

Iceland is a geologic wonderland.

It is one of the best analogs we have for early Mars. The Made of Mars team has led several NASA-supported expeditions to map the hot springs of Iceland. By exploring Iceland, you will get an understanding of the hot springs, volcanoes, glaciers and rivers that would have sculpted early Mars.

Once we are successfully funded, we will design the Deimos, Phobos and SpaceCase for full production. Our timeline is intentionally long to allow for trial, error and redesign until we can guarantee a high-quality product. We will guarantee delivery by Christmas 2019.

We will contact supporters of the Deimos and Phobos Limited rewards to begin production on their custom wallets.

We will coordinate with each supporter of the Expedition rewards to schedule the trip, accounting for the supporter's personal preference and the weather conditions of the expedition sites.

Yu Li, Design Advisor

Yu researches the areas of science technology and speculative design  where our imagination meets technology development. Yu is working with Made of Mars to develop the design experience to connect you to the Journey toward Mars.

Are you actually building from the materials from Mars?

We have not yet brought back any material from Mars. Only a few hundred kilograms of Martian rocks have fallen as meteorites and they are quite valuable. However, these Mars meteorites allow us to know which Earth rocks are exactly like those on Mars. We are starting Made of Mars with these real volcanic rocks on Earth that are just like the rocks on Mars.

What are the Made of Mars products made of?

Our initial line of Made of Mars products are designed to feature the basalt fabric paneling that will make it unique and tie us to the Journey to Mars. Since there are no current product developers with experience working with basalt, we worked with a leather craftsman to learn how to create high-quality products with basalt fabric paneling. Our line of Limited rewards will keep these materials and general design. For the full production, we will evaluate alternative solutions to create the best quality product and most appropriate to put the Journey to Mars in your hands.

Why go to Mars at all? Are you giving up on the Earth?

Earth is our home. It will always be our home. Made of Mars wants to help our home while pushing toward new explorations. We are dedicated to developing better materials for use on Earth that will benefit society here, independent from our dreams of Mars. Through our efforts toward Space Exploration, we strive to create technology that will help create a more sustainable like on Earth as well.

Why Mars? Shouldn’t we make things from the Moon first?

We love Mars but are also very excited about returning to the Moon! The technology we are developing is just as useful on the Moon since it is full of basalt.

How do we follow along with the Made of Mars journey?

Made of Mars will be detailing the journey on our website at MadeofMars.com with more frequent updates on Facebook and Instagram. Sign up on our website to be added to our mailing list for the latest updates and information.

Risks and challenges

All projects have risks. That is why this campaign exists. While our team is led by scientists who understand the Journey to Mars, we have worked with designers, craftsmen and manufactures to understand the entire chain from product redesign, material sourcing and availability, manufacturing, quality control and fulfillment.

The two risks that keep us up at night is quality control and pricing. These basaltic fiber products will be a first in class item. That is exciting, but if there is no basis to know how basalt will handle the currently available manufacturing process and your wear and tear. Our plan involves working with factories to understand, test and try until we get this right. It might prove to be easy or it might end up being very hard, but it is needed to get us to Mars. We are determined to make this work and get you a reward that we can be proud of.

The second risk is price. The innovation required for manufacturing will require some trial and error. Each trial will require design, prototyping and evaluation. While we want to provide you with the lowest possible price, to help everyone connect with Mars, we have set them to allow for several iterations of this process. We would prefer to list a price that will ensure success than one that will result in a possible failure. If it turns out to be easy and inexpensive to create, then the extra funds will go into creating the technology and content that will make this a true step toward Mars.

The main way that we are mitigating these challenges is through a conservative pricing and timeline. Our listed timeline is long than we think this could take. This will allow time for trial and error and to develop the techniques we need. We want to make sure that we keep our promises, so we promise what we know we can achieve and will hope to do much better!
