Hey everyone -
We're reached the end of the campaign! I'm absolutely amazed at the level of support we've gotten in the last 24 hours. With the extra money we'll be able to hire a third person for the final month and half of post production - and the film will be that much better because of it. Thank you all so much.
A few notes: your payment will go to something called "Jump to the Field". Don't worry, it's not a glitch, I haven't been hacked. That's the name of my producer, Chris Skotchdopole's company.
Kickstarter payment errors: a few (12 or so) people have payment errors. This means that for whatever reason Kickstarter could not approve your card. I think this happened to me before on one of the first Kickstarter projects I ever backed: I'd switched banks and the my Amazon account was still linked to the old card. So just reenter the information, being extra careful(and making sure your Amazon account is right as well). I even checked it out online - sometimes for whatever reason it just doesn't work the first time. Not great, I know, but those of you who found Amazon temperamental will understand that sometimes its the tech's fault not yours.
Thought I'd reiterate what the deal with the rewards is:
If the movie by June is finished ALL rewards will go out in the middle of June.
If there is still a month or two so of post production left on the film I will give everyone who contributed 5 dollars or more the ability to watch the almost-finished film online as a gesture of good faith. This is a long process and transparency and communication are priorities for me. If your reward includes anything on paper I will also send it out then: Frames, Posters, Prints, Storyboards, Art Books and the Original Poster will all be sent out by the middle of June unless you request to get everything all in one package.
The DVD/Blu-Ray and 10 dollar digital download level will include:
- Original Short Film
- "Animation only" version of the short film - see just the rotoscoped frames
Commentary tracks are sometimes my favorite part of DVDs. So I'm doing three:
- Post production team commentary track: Listen to me, Auden and Anneylese discuss the post -production process
- Production team commentary track: Gonna round up as many of the original cast a crew to share their thoughts on the experience
- Just me commentary track: I try to tell you what I was thinking when I made this thing - success not guarenteed
- Behind the scenes: 5 - 7 minute featurette detailing the process of getting one shot as a glimmer in my eye to a cinematic, animated reality
I will give an update on our progress every month. Might not be exactly on the first of every month but it will always be within the first week.
Okay - that's it. Once again - thank you all so much for making this a resounding success. Its time to get to work.
- James Siewert
P.S. I tried to sing a cover of They Might Be Giant's song 'Experimental Film' to thank all the backers. Listening back to it I decided it might not be such a welcome gift. That being said if you REALLY want to listen to it (and know me personally) I will send you the mp3. My friend Nick Poland has a pretty awesome solo in it. Too bad I don't have a voice to match.
We have 6 days left in our campaign - and here are the first 6 seconds of completed footage to commemorate. The video embedded below shows all (roughly) 7 stages of the process that this particular clip went through before it was completed. The video is embedded from YouTube so that you can watch in full screen HD if you'd like (I'd recommend it).
As usual - if you like what you see and still want a DVD or digital download, we could still use your support!
As you may have noticed we have rather suddenly reached our goal, which is incredibly exciting. This is really going to happen. I'm going to post a proper update next week with more animation progress etc, but theres some things that should probably be addressed immediately.
Question: If people back the project now, what will be done with extra money raised?
Answer: as you can see in the "risks and challenges" section the biggest challenge is getting the project done within the next five months. I always knew that we might not be able to make every frame as detailed as I would like if it was always just the three of us working. However, as things have developed over the last month it seems like it might be possible to have additional help through the last month or so of the process, which means a higher quality of animation because for some key moments we can spend more time drawing each frame.
If extra money is raised my first priority would be to use that house and feed another person for the final month of the drawing. I am also planning on putting my own money to further this purpose: I am shooting at commercial in the summer, and the money I am getting upfront for this commercial will hopefully be able to used to bring additional help.
If there is money raised beyond this (which I doubt), it will be put towards paying for the festival fees which will ensure that the film gets a chance to find an audience.
I feel ambivalent about calling these "stretch goals", because I am ambivalent about the idea of "stretch goals": part of me believes that if you have the audacity to ask people to help fund a personal creative project, to continue to ask for help beyond meeting the goal is at best obnoxious, at worst exploitative.
On the other hand I still believe there are good reasons to consider backing the project if you have not, especially regarding the reward levels 30 dollars and below. Specifically - if you want to see the movie in the near future pledging 5 dollars is the best way to make sure that happens: many festivals do not want you to post films online for free if you are submitting them for consideration. Moreover, on the off chance that the film gets into a festival and does well it may be shown theatrically or even released as part of a collection. This would mean that I would never be allowed to post the film online for free. So its possible that 5 dollars is the cheapest price the film will ever have.
Once again - I'm incredibly excited that we met our goal and if we don't earn an additional cent I will still be satisfied. I just want to make it clear: if you are interested in backing the project, we're not using that extra money to line our pockets, we're using every bit as a way to make an even higher quality film for you.
P.S. I just took a red eye flight, and so am not firing on all cylinders perhaps - please excuse any typos.
Well its been a little over a week since the last update and it seems like a lot has happened: we got project of the day a while ago and were on the front page of the website for a bit. That was really awesome, and temporarily confidence inducing. Predictably things have gotten a little more quiet since then but I've got some new stuff to share and I am changing the structure of the site a little bit.
First things first. I'd like to make supporting the project possible for everyone. Even broke-ish people. So I'm adding a new reward level at 5 dollars - the digital download, previously available for 10 dollars is now available for 5. The 10 dollar reward now will include a download not just of the film, but some of the goodies that will come with the DVD: two commentary tracks, and a behind the scenes documentary. If anyone who pledged 10 dollars feels burned by this deal, please let me know and I'll try and make it right. I think the special features will be 100% worth it though - we are gonna do a real in depth look at the process behind the film that I guarantee will not be a waste of time. And now you can get the film for the same price of the average pint of beer in Brooklyn. If you can afford a beer you can afford this movie.
Secondly I wanted to share a bit of the score that my friend Carles Delgado is working on. I don't want to spoil the music from the actual film so this bit is part of the credits music. Carles was at pains to stress that the score is a work in progress and is neither mixed nor mastered. This means that the levels are not quite right and it won't sound as professional as a final product would. A final qualification: this credits music is an actual song, the soundtrack for the film itself is more atmospheric. Never the less I think its moving in a cool direction and am excited to share with all of you.
Meanwhile, Auden has gotten started on modeling the set I built in 3d so we can do some of the warping animation that happens towards the end of the film:
Again this is very much a work in progress but you can see the basic geometry of the room coming together in his model:
But what have you been up to, while others have been working feverishly on your behalf, James?! I have gotten started beginning the extensive process of tracing the frames. I'm about 70 frames in!
So...thats almost it for now. Just a small obligatory grovel: it seems like we are doing well, we are well over half way to our goal, and only slightly over half way in terms of days and its been awesome to see the support so far. However, I'll let you in on a small secret - obviously when you start a Kickstarter you make a mental list of people you are pretty sure are going to back the project (Thank you Mom and Dad). We've pretty much exhausted that list now, and are in uncharted territory. The final push to our goal will be the hardest, because it will be composed much more entirely of small contributions of people that are genuinely curious about the film and aren't related to me or the collaborators. So if that's you, and you haven't backed the project yet: we need your help! Amazon has been a little bit buggy so don't wait until the last minute!
Thank you for everything you've done so far. I'll get back to work now.
