Hello and thank you for checking out our page! We are so excited to be coming back to Kickstarter for our second campaign with Olive. We've decided to release Volume 2 in three parts, so this Kickstarter is for the first installment. You'll be helping us to publish a 22-page comic that picks up where Volume 1 left off!
Volume 2 Part 1 is already written and currently in the process of being illustrated and colored.
In Volume 2 Part 1, we begin immediately where we left off in Volume 1. We'll learn a little bit more about Purgatory, get to know a new Gurgel, and meet a few new characters.
If you are new to Olive and the Underworld, here's a little more information about Volume 1 and the Olive's story in general:
Olive and the Underworld, Volume 1 is a 60 page, full color graphic novel. While there are mature themes such as death and the afterlife, Olive doesn't contain graphic violence or harsh curse words and so would be suitable for a young adult audience as well as adults.
At its heart, this is a story about the sometimes lonely journey one goes on to find one's place in the world. Who am I? Where do I belong? Who will love me? And learning along the way that things aren't always what they seem.
She longs for a home but it never works out.
After a bus accident in which she and her classmates perish, they find themselves in Purgatory. While her classmates struggle to accept their fate, Olive finds this new world and its inhabitants intriguing. (While Heaven has Angels and Hell has Demons, Purgatory has Gurgels. If Angels are like the starlets of the afterlife and Demons are like Wall Street dynamos, Gurgels are like your neighborhood mechanic that keeps your junk car running like new. )
In Volume 2 and beyond, Olive determines that at last, she has found a place she can call home. No one else going through Purgatory understands. The Gurgels insist that Purgatory is a temporary place for humans. However, Olive is determined to stay.
Every penny we earn will go towards making Olive and the Underworld a reality.
Funding will go into creating content for Olive, publishing, mailing, kickstarter rewards, kickstarter fees, and any unforeseen expenses.
If we happen to do well, then anything above and beyond we need for Volume 2, Part 1 will go towards the creation of Volume 2, Part 2.
Emily Felt is a lover of stories and characters, and has long dreamed of seeing her words transformed into beautiful pictures such as the ones in this project. She's had a variety of different career paths over the years (lobbyist, makeup artist, improviser, etc.) but through it all, she's always been a writer. Currently, she's also writing screenplays and pilots, but has fallen in love with this genre and community and can't imagine not being a part of it.
Laura West has been illustrating stories since childhood, when she'd ask her parents to write the words so she could draw the pictures. After spending many grown-up years working in various industries, she quit a cushy corporate job to go back to school, graduating from Art Center College of Design (Illustration, '11). She currently works as a concept artist in the themed entertainment industry and draws all day, and spends nights and weekends with Olive. It has been both a dream come true and a labor of love to illustrate a graphic novel, and holding a printed copy will be the culmination of many hours of worthwhile work.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest risk and challenge is time. All of our rewards except for the comic are completed and already in hand or ordered. At this writing, the comic is about half illustrated. We will do our best to get it to you on time but sometimes life throws you some unexpected curveballs.
However, we will keep you up to date with our progress and let you know if and when we expect delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
