I had no idea when I set out to create a beautiful place for my favourite pens to rest on that others would be blown away by my creation.
My first Kickstarter campaign was a great success ... but now I'm back with blue! Introducing A Midnight Blue complete Pen Rest and an Oxford Blue top!
But just look at what others backers from the first Kickstarter had to say!
The Pen Rest arrived the other day and we just want to say it is beautiful. You should be very proud of your design. Both gold and silver blocks look better then we have even imagined.
Excellent quality, the finish is amazing and definitely heavier than we expected . As the attached pictures show, the packaging is very nice that makes the product even more unique. The Pen Rests look perfect on our desks Thank you. Katarzyna & Wojciech
The packaging is really nice and the gold and silver blocks look perfect on my desk (because) it is stackable! They arrived the other day but I waited until today to open the box since today is my husband’s birthday and the whole reason for the order. He loves them! He took each one out and unwrapped it as though it were a train set, lol. It was very well packed; there seemed to be very little shifting of the boxes. We liked the black tissue paper, which added a little special something. And we both love the boxes themselves! They are much nicer than I imagined they would be. … Besides fountain pens, my husband also likes boxes, so this was an added bonus. The Pen Rests themselves are very attractive and glide together very well .. Thank you for all your hard work in bringing your great idea to fruition!! Congratulations! – Jane USA
I am extremely happy with the packaging, the look and feel of the packaging with the magnetic latch, and of course, The Pen Rest themselves are just wonderful! I especially love the brass ones. I guess the others are aluminium …. All in all, you should be very proud of yourself as you do have a winner. – Steven USA
Just got it today! I really like the packaging, it looks very sharp. The Pen Rest is heavier than I expected, and I like the feel of the smooth curved surfaces.
When I am able to do a more thorough review I’ll send a link. But so far my first impressions are all positive! – Elizabeth USA
Just pulled it out of the mail box. Looks amazing – Matthew UK
I received my three Pen Rest blocks and cap today and I am very pleased. The blocks and cap are of excellent quality and the finish is perfect. The packaging was good and the blocks arrived without any problems or damage in shipping. I would also like to compliment you on the manner in which you conducted your Kickstarter campaign. You provided frequent and informative updates including interesting options along the way. Great product and great service. Thank you! Mark Lonergan
Tickled pink with my pen rest. It is beautifully made and looks rather stylish on my desk. I went for two storeys and can now find more than one pen when the phone rings . . . it came nicely packaged and is a pleasure to own. P. J. Turner, Pontefract
Well, I received my PenRest order this morning. WOW this item is better than expected. GREAT look and GREAT feel. My pen has never looked better. Thank you David & Team – Sally UK
My first impressions: Great! The packaging is really nice and the Pen Rests came in gift boxes with the lid held in place by a magnet. The blocks and the top look even nicer than I imagined. The two blocks have a perfect friction fit when you slot them together. Altogether a great way of storing pencils and pens. I hope they will be available for many years to come in case I want to add to my existing pen rests.
I can confirm that the Pen Rest arrived and they are excellent. I love everything about the product, the package including box, rest, build and feel are to a very high standard. Well worth the investment. I am back in the office tomorrow and will be taking the Pen Rest with me so will be able to provide some pictures. Once again an excellent product. Cheers Matt
I am happy with the pen rest so far. I do really like the fact that it makes my pens accessible as well as allowing them to be displayed. Before this, they were just in a pile on my desk. So far, I haven't noticed anything that I don't like about them. Alex
That was what some of the backers had to say after the initial Kickstarter successfully funded last time.
This time I am back with blue! The blocks are near to black but have this awesome sheen that reflects the light displaying this aurora of Midnight Blue. You get all sorts of variations from blue to black in different lights from this light sheen,
I have also created a beautiful and modern Oxford Blue top ... it looks outstanding with a silver block. It is simply the most fabulous contrasting Oxford Blue top that you could imagine. It contrasts beautifully with the silver and gold blocks.
Take a look at this image showing you all the colours. This will help you identify the combination you want.
In addition, I will produce a few more solid brass Pen Rests ... just 5! Truly Limited Editions!
Here you can see the various colours with the solid brass top and block at the bottom.. Magical!
As I said I have also introduced this beautiful Oxford Blue Top which contrasts so well with the Silver and Gold Blocks. (It does not match the Midnight Blue Blocks because of the shading variations in the manufacturing process.)
You will love this combo too with the new Midnight Blue blocks and silver tops! Stunning!
Sometimes I look at my work space and just have to have a tidy up... make myself appear more organised... and create space so that productivity soars.
I would take a look at my desk; pens, paper all over the place ... don't get me wrong I knew where everything was ... but I'm just saying there were times when I was looking at disorganised chaos.
My idea for the Pen Rest was born out of the need to bring order from the chaos I faced on my desk. Such beautiful pens out of sight or under piles of papers was certainly not the answer.
The Pen Rest brings that order. It takes up no room, really... it stacks vertically.
I looked high and low for the perfect, most beautiful totem, desk art for pens I could find... there was just nothing out there! I had created the Worlds FIRST vertical stackable modular Pen Rest.
Pens are precision instruments with billions in use worldwide. Most are kept in a drawer, a mug, or under a pile of paper.
There are certainly pen holders available and even desk accessories, but none that I ever found could do justice by showing off high quality, often high priced fountain pens, roller ball and mechanical pencils that are so carefully made, detailed often with unique features and designs.
I am passionate about beautiful pens, brands such as Montblanc, Sheaffer and Graf von Faber. I am also a firm believer that when you have beautiful pens, whether one that you write with every day or a whole collection you've built up over many years, they deserve to be seen.
There are certainly other pen holders and desk accessories on the market, but none that I have ever found do justice by showing off the quality and design of the pen. I therefore designed The Pen Rest. A uniquely stackable, practical and elegant product that can be used by anyone whether they own one pen or a dozen.
I hope The Pen Rest looks as beautiful on your desk, display unit or shelf as it does on mine.
Perhaps I'm a perfectionist!
The Pen Rest had to have the following features for me...
It must be a solid object with weight that stopped it sliding about It needed a delicate shelf to place my pen horizontal on it. Visually appealing I wanted to be able to admire my pens A Modular Stackable design I have no idea how many pens I might have now or in the future so I wanted to be able to build on my Pen Rest and keep its aesthetic appeal.
A brief Background to my design idea..
I believe a writing instrument should be seen ... clearly and not hidden away.
I wanted a modular stand too ... one that you could add to as and when you felt like it.
The design had to be practical and yet smooth, with rounded edges.
I was particularly keen that the block should give the appearance of floating and so the chamfered edges give that illusion.
Making the block vertical meant little footprint was being taken up. The actual area taken up on a desk is just 60mm x 45mm and yet you can stack as many pens as you like.
A critical part of the design was to create a centre of gravity that did not change even if you stacked a load of pens.
This is because, the weight of each block is 227g, plus the weight of the top of 31g creates a paper weight effect ... a dead weight. As the pens added weigh less than the block... and the centre of gravity is about 20mm from the back of the block, the Pen Rest does not find itself tipping over.
Once the CAD drawings were completed I set about getting the right manufacturer and creating prototypes.
Sadly a UK manufacturer reneged on a deal to manufacture them so they are now made in China.
I have to be honest and say this was not my first choice, but in fairness the quality has been spot on most of the time... and where issues are raised they address them.
You'll be so impressed when you get your Pen Rest.
Once the parts are made they go through a variety of processes polishing, sand blasting and anodising before they are complete.
This is a very time consuming process that cannot be cut short. To get the highest quality finish every time each Pen Rest is individually cut using 5 axis CNC machines.
In this image The Pen Rest is stacked using three blocks and one top (also a great place to display your ink).
The Pen Rest is beautifully shaped to reflect the curves of nature and lovingly display your pens.
The gold & the midnight blue blocks looks different under various lighting conditions.
"as a Mechanical Engineer I was thrilled with what you have done. The design and finishing of the pen rest looks fantastic." Thomas Tan www.onfountainpens.com
"The Pen Rest is a great idea as too many deserving pens end up being tucked away without being appreciated the way they should. I hope David will reach the 'soft cover' stretch goal." - Matthias Meckel Bleistift.memm.de
"I like it. I think its a neat idea and design" Coy - Root Designs R&D
"The rest itself is certainly quite aesthetically pleasing, and the anodized aluminum would make it quite enticing as desk top art. Stackability is a big plus - after all, who has only one pen inked at a time? :-)” Ken Cavers kcavers.blogspot.ca
“I love the design and concept. Very minimalistic and creative” Mark Anthony - Creator of the LYPEN
Each Pen Rest has a 45mm sill that gently balances your pen in the middle so that it is easily accessible but most importantly can be seen in all its glory.
The unique sill on which the pen rests on is recessed slightly to allow for the various diameters often attributable to different designs.
The gap between each pen is sufficient to pick up a pen without knocking off the others from the Pen Rest.
Each Pen Rest is manufactured from aluminium available. Our second run will be in aluminium using the latest milling and CNC machining techniques. However, stretch goals include the Pen Rest in Stainless Steel, Copper, and 24K Gold Plate.
Because of the weight of each Pen Rest, it can be used as a paper weight, but unusually can be stacked as high as you like.
Each block contains a unique tongue and groove allowing the interlocking of the blocks, so that the lines flow smoothly together.
I believe that your favourite pens should not end up in a mug, or just tossed to one side on the desk. They deserve better than this.
They need a home, naturally accessible and solid enough to not move.
For a Stretch Goal if I reach £2500 I will include either a 45mm x 15mm felt sill cover. This luxurious piece of thick black felt is perfect for protecting pens. It contours the sill perfectly and makes the Pen Rest look prestige. It has been designed to cover the sill and allow pens to sit on felt thus reducing any concerns.
Delivery of these will be by the end of September 2015! This is because we have already run a successful Kickstarter campaign and have really great lead times now.
Risks and challenges
I used to run a mail order business, so I am very familiar with the need to pack well and ship on time.
My successfully funded Kickstarter did have issues along the way but I still delivered on time, in budget and with a perfect product.
I have had all the 3D CAD drawings done and the sill cover is ready to be produced if we reach the stretch goal.
We are ready to manufacture each block and top.
Once we have a successfully funded project work will start on making each unique block.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
