About

First Southeast Asian female to cycle 4,233 miles in 40 days in search of inspirational stories and America's food hotspots

Why ride across America?

I grew up in Malaysia and lived in Singapore for over 16 years before moving to California over 2 years ago. Singapore is one of the smallest countries in the world, measuring 30 x 16 miles. As part of my triathlon training, I'd cycle around the island state every Saturday, repeatedly covering every square inch of the country.

Coming to California was a huge eye opener. I remembered rubbing my eyes repeatedly to look into the horizon and not seeing the end to the vastness of the mountainous terrain of California. I started exploring every nook and corner of this gorgeous place on my bike. I find it hard to explain or contain the euphoria every time I do so - being at one with nature and breathing in her beauty - the experience is inexplicably raw and real, one which can't be experienced sitting comfortably in a car

With this relationship I have with cycling and experiencing nature, I am taking this outside of California - all the way across America.

The Film

During my 40-day journey, two videographers will travel alongside me and film my journey. Lest you think this is nothing more than a girl riding her bike across America, the scenes and stories in this film will be pretty incredible.

Here’s what you can expect:

THE RIDE

Imagine riding over 100 miles every day, crossing 10 different states and encountering breathtaking natural beauty. Here’s a brief overview of the journey:

  • Dip myself at the start line - the Pacific Ocean in Astoria, Oregon, before starting the 40-day ride
  • Climb the high altitude states of Idaho and Montana
  • Try not to gawk too much at gorgeous national landmarks including the Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Teton in Wyoming
  • More climbing up the mountain passes of Colorado
  • Fly through the flat lands of Kansas
  • Hope I don’t encounter freak weather and tornadoes in Missouri and Illinois
  • Ride across the coal-mining state of Kentucky
  • Final call at the State of the Presidents, Virginia
  • End my ride by dipping at the end line, i.e. the Atlantic Ocean, and greeted by a welcome-home, end-of-ride party in Yorktown, Virginia.

PEOPLE STORIES

I believe every individual is a gem with an unbelievable life story, yet not everyone has the opportunity to have their stories told. On this bike quest, I will be meeting and speaking with various people in the towns I ride through, drawing out from their lives, stories of triumphs and defeats, love and pain, joy and struggles, aspirations conceived, dreams shattered and hope surfaced.

Amazing people I meet on the road

Some of these people are migrants who have settled their families in the U.S. and assimilated into the local culture, building new lives and identities for themselves. Others include former sporting heroes and champions now living in the shadow of their past glory.

I hope to document these incredible stories so that collectively, we can learn from each other and find strength to reach farther into our destinies.

FOOD ADVENTURE

Don’t be fooled by my body size - I’m a big foodie. I love my food (my Instagram photos say it all). Perhaps this is why I’m riding - so I get to savor the best food experiences in the country. 3 big meals a day (not including energy bars while riding) over 40 days - that’s 120 meals. I will be leaving a pretty sizable food trail along this ride - from home grown American cafeterias and sleepy town diners to mom and pop restaurants, and I’m pretty sure I can’t avoid these - greasy, fast food joints (which will be a delight to a starving cyclist).

How does America come to be known for her extensive gastronomic cuisines? I’ll set out to find out as I devour each meal with absolute relish.

The Motivation behind Angie Across America

The United States is close to 3.8 million square miles - that's over 14,000 times larger than Singapore!

Undaunted by its vastness, I am determined to ride across America powered by my physical strength and will.

Because every time I push myself to the limits, someone else is inspired to do something great with their lives.

From my story of being overweight after college to running marathons and Ironman, I have had many people reaching out and telling me that they have been inspired by my determination and sporting pursuits to start taking control of their bodies and running or exercising.

Running literally changed my life - you can read about it by clicking on the picture

I believe that we are all agents of change. One man's story is another's inspiration. I have personally been inspired by many great athletes who have broken the impossible barrier and opened the path for me to lay hold of my own destiny and carve the roadmap to my dreams.

How you can help

Spread the word by telling your friends, family and social networks about this Kickstarter campaign via Facebook, Twitter and Email:

You have no idea what one click of the mouse can do... (it can go very far and wide). Thank you for helping me spread the word about this project!

Contribute financially

While I can contribute my time, energy, resources and hard work in training, riding, interviewing people and putting together stunning images, a documentary and a book for this project, I don't have the finances to pull this off. I need your financial support to pay for the following:

  • Film crew and gear
  • Airfare from California to Oregon where I’ll begin my ride in Astoria, Oregon
  • Airfare from Yorktown, Virginia where I'll end my ride to fly back home to California
  • 40 days of food enough to feed a hungry cyclist and her film crew
  • 40 nights of accommodation in a budget motel
  • Car rental, fuel and travel insurance
  • Editing the documentary

The cost involved is high. But the reward will be worth it. This will be an epic adventure that isn't just one girl's labor, but a collective effort to make it come to pass.

Make a pledge today. Any contribution, no matter how small or large, will make a difference. And all contributions will be rewarded! Please check out the donation tiers to your right to find the level and gift that is right for you.

Your contribution is critical to the success of this bike ride.

My Background: A love affair with endurance sports

I couldn't sit still from a young age - I would always run out of activities to expand my boundless energy at. When I discovered running in 2010, I progressed quickly from running marathons to racing triathlons and eventually, the Ironman.

After completing my first Ironman race in 2013 with energy in my tank to spare, I knew I was wired for adventure and ultra endurance events would be my demonstration of a live well-lived.

I am also the co-host of The Triathlon Sherpa, a podcast that features inspiring conversations with age-group triathletes from around the world.

Angie Across America combines my passion for endurance sports and my professional skills as a former television researcher and writer.

Special Thanks

  • Ansel Misfeldt (videographer)
  • Woon Junyang (aerial videographer)
  • Sam Cooper (video editor, after effects animator)
  • Tom Floyd (video editor)
  • Jason Ong (the most amazing gift to me - my husband, number one supporter, advisor, manager)

Risks and challenges

Any physical pursuit encompasses risks. I'll be out riding over 4,000 miles by myself, albeit with a film crew; battling the natural elements, in rain and shine, tornado and freak snow, over high mountain passes and vast pasture lands. However, these risks often serve as opportunity to tell the story of perseverance, tenacity, strength, and determination that is necessary when seeking one's dreams.
