MAJOR is a short film written by Nathaniel Williams.
A bear spirit in the form of a young boy crashes into a young woman’s life to protect her from the schemes of a mysterious, malevolent force.
Ursa Major was formed from the stuff of the cosmos, much like the constellation that bears his name. He first hunted magical creatures that dwelled in the heavens, playing among the stars. He was not actually a bear at first; all of the spirit beings who represent earthly animals once had strange, sometimes incomprehensible proto-forms. Ursa returns to the heavens every now and then, but he spends most of his time in forests, living among normal bears.Ursa has been summoned by Astrid Bryce, mother of Meggy Bryce, to protect Meggy from a looming danger. Neither Ursa nor Meggy know exactly what that danger is, but Ursa is determined to be Meggy’s spirit bodyguard until the menace is dealt with.
When Meggy was five, she saw something in her closet. Meggy’s mother told her about wendigoes, shadow people and the Deer Woman. Most were harmless, but she saw them all the time. She was teased and bullied at school, called “crazy” and ostracized from the other children. As she grew up, she grew to resent this thing that she’d been saddled with, the curse of the Sight, the curse of her heritage. Meggy wants to carve out her own path, free from those meddlesome things, to be a success in what she bitingly calls the “real world.”
Risks and challenges
The challenges of this project is buying a bear suit! In order for our Ursa to appear believable as a mystical bear, we need a realistic bear suit. One has been located and runs $600.
Our Ursa is the key compenent of this dark comedy, and we need him to convince and connect with the audience as he travels down from the heavens to wreak havoc in others lives.
After we receive the funds for our bear, the next challenge is making him appear as real as we can onscreen. We will be using a specialty creative team (1 person) that will be using after effects to enhance the bear and also morph a child into the bear. This will take time and patience and has yet to be fully realized - because we need that bear suit!
The movie is slated for viewing in June - we are on a time crunch to bring this humorous dark tale to you!
