About this project
Donate now to help Hip Hop Fundamentals tour our new educational dance show, Civil Rights Movements, to ten under-resourced Philadelphia schools - at no cost to the local schools!
Civil Rights Movements, an hour-long assembly, focuses on student involvement in the American Civil Rights Movement as seen through the eyes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The show uses dance, audience participation, and a variety of activities to explore the social conditions that gave rise to the movement, the heroic work necessary to end segregation, and the critical role that young people played in winning equal rights for millions of Americans.
Hip Hop Fundamentals is the only Hip Hop Education team in the country owned and run by professional breakdancers who use this dynamic dance form to teach academic content.

Help us expand our new project, Civil Rights Movements, in which we use Breaking to teach youth empowerment, social justice, and the power of working together.
Every dollar you give helps fund our ten-school tour, and supports our 'Youth teaching Youth' framework, in which we mentor and employ Philadelphia up-and-coming teen dancers.
Your donations directly fund:
- Production costs (sound equipment, costuming)
- Transportation costs
- Paying our performers a fair and equitable wage for their talent
- Developing our 'Youth teaching Youth' mentorship framework
$10,000 may sound like a lot -- and it is -- but consider that we will be able to provide our empowering, highly-interactive arts education experience to more than 5000 students. Every two dollars you give allows one underserved Philadelphia child a chance to learn about the Civil Rights Movement in this fresh, fun, and memorable way. The worlds of Breaking and Education have never been fused like this before; with your help, we can implement this project to serve those who need it the most.
Also, you'll receive sweet rewards for your donations: DVDs, t-shirts, an original B-Boy move named after you. We'll honor larger donations by providing, in addition to our 10-school tour, free workshops (once, twice, or ongoing instruction) to local schools. Your big donations help us provide even more intimate dance experiences for under-served youth.
Education is suffering. The Arts are being cut. Philadelphia recently decided to close 23 neighborhood public schools, with more potential cuts on the horizon. We believe that young people have the right to participate in the arts, and the right to diverse educational opportunities. We recognize that our school district is in crisis, and that it is our responsibility to respond. We respond with the tools we have: Hip Hop Dance and Education. But we need your help. Donate today and spread the word!
Let's take some questions:
CAN I INCREASE MY PLEDGE ONCE IT'S BEEN MADE?
Yes! Once you donate to our campaign, you may want to change your incentive reward to a different one, or increase your pledge amount. To do so, go to Kickstarter and sign in. If you go to our campaign page, the green “Back This Project” button has been replaced with a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click it and you can enter a new amount, or choose a new incentive.
IS MY PLEDGE AMOUNT PUBLICLY DISPLAYED?
No. Only you and the project owner will be able to see your pledge amount.
CAN WE EXCEED THE GOAL?
Of course! The more of your funding we receive, the more we will be able to spread this performance to schools in need.
I'M NOT IN THE USA, CAN I STILL PLEDGE?
Yes, you can pledge from anywhere.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE MONEY ISN'T RAISED BY THE DEADLINE?
If our goal isn't reached before the 30 day deadline, then your credit card will not be charged, and we get nothing! That's why it's imperative that YOU, our backers, help us spread the word about this project. If you believe in what we're doing, spread the word!
HOW CAN I CONTACT YOU? WHERE CAN I GET A COPY OF THE LESSON PLAN FOR THIS PROJECT?

Risks and challenges
After our project goal is reached, we will immediately begin scheduling free shows (and any workshops earned) for deserving schools in the Philadelphia Area. Our team, our youth, and our show are all ready to go (minus some new production elements that we will add using your donations). The only possible delays may lie in the fact that we may have to schedule some school shows for after their summer break. However, judging from the interest level we have recieved from schools we have told about the post-kickstarter tour, we don't predict any problems.
From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU ALL in advance for all your donations and your promotional help!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
