Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The prototypes you see here have been tested over months and we are quite happy with their performance. As as result, we are optimistic about the prospects of meeting the deadline. Just in case something unexpected comes up, the timeline has some built-in cushioning.
Because we have been able to test the prototypes thoroughly, we are not too worried about having any major functional complications when we go into production. Our manufacturing partner is a wonderful woman named Melissa who we have worked with on other projects in the past. Her quality is outstanding and she manufactures kitchen products for some of the top brands like Alessi, Oxo, and Prepara. It is important to us that we collaborate at each stage of the project with established professionals we can rely on.
This is our first time shipping goods ourselves. Usually we do the design work, verify the quality of the production and then the boats, planes, trains and trucks are all up to other people. In order to protect the project from rookie mistakes, we are partnering with industry leader DHL for the transport of the goods from the factory to the distribution center in Los Angeles.
This distribution centre is part of the Shipwire network and our new best friend Steve at Shipwire is going to hold our hand through each stage of getting the rewards shipped out in a timely and organized fashion. (Thank you Steve!)
What is the deal with BPA and Phthalates? Should I worry about having my exposed fruits and veggies right up against a hugger?
Food Huggers are 100% food grade silicone and nothing else. This makes them totally BPA and phthalate free. Your food is safe with us!
If you like the Food Huggers and want to support our efforts to get them produced, then you (and hopefully lots of other people) can pledge funds to help the project. Everyone who pledges $18 or more will receive at least one set of Food Huggers as our "Thank you" for helping us get started. Kickstarter is collecting all the pledges until July 13 and then, if we have met our goal and only if we meet our goal, the pledges will be collected and we will begin the production process. We hope to be sending everyone's thank you gifts in October.
Yes. We have wrapped a number of onions in Food Huggers and they keep the onion scent from getting into your other produce. On our Facebook page you can see a picture of one of our onion smell tests!
How long the vegetables will last depends on how long they would have lasted if you had not cut their skin. Some tomatoes last more than a week while others only have a few days between when you bring them home, or pick them from the garden and when they start to go bad. The Food Huggers recreate the seal of the vegetables skin which has been removed. Food Huggers prevent leftover fruits and vegetables from dehydrating and also minimize their exposure to bacteria. They help preserve the freshness of your produce, but they can not extend the life of a fruit or veggie indefinitely.
