My son, David, the Boo-Monster, has low-functioning autism and is my entire world. So I've created an entire fantasy world for him.
"AH-BOO!" The Story Behind the Legends of the Boo-Monster
The Boo-Monster is based on my son, David, who lives his life with low-functioning autism. He is my best friend, greatest teacher, and, quite frankly, my whole world. So I felt it only fair that I create a whole world for him.
“Legends of the Boo-Monster” is the fantasy story of a little monster who has a developmental disability known as the “Distance”, which would be our world's version of autism. For over three centuries the Continent of Monsters was a place where diverse and amazing creatures lived in harmony, but now an ancient prophecy is being fulfilled and a group of other-dimensional baddies known as the Intolerance are going to try to make the Continent their own. The Boo-Monster is the center of the prophecy due to his “dimensional frequency”, so the greatest monsters of the Continent gather to protect the Boo-Monster and the peaceful world they’ve always known.
Some of these amazing monsters are based on real-life Friends of the Boo-Monster. As seen in the trailer above, the Boo-Monster has some spectacular and loving friends! More will be added to the page as the campaign progresses.
Like this from two of the Friends of the Boo-Monster, Tyger Redd and The Lovely Miss V, or as they're known in the "real" world, Cole Stratton and Vanessa Ragland!
Who knows? One of those monsters might be YOU!
The book will also feature occasional interludes where I detail the similarities between the Boo-Monster's adventures and David's reality. These interludes will serve as a sort of director's commentary track in literary form.
I'm writing this book, not only for David, but for all of the children, adults and parents that live with autism as a part of their lives. I am also writing this book for all those who wish to understand autism and the challenges it represents for the people who love someone with autism. The story is very much a fantasy adventure, but as the writer, I promised myself that I'd never forget why I'm writing this story and who I'm writing it for.
Below is a link to an excerpt from the first chapter. I very much hope it will make you want to read more.
Here is an interview I did with the amazing Shannon Penrod of Autism-Live about the project.
WHERE THE FUNDING WILL GO
Some funds will go towards paying the immensely talented artist David "Ragz Dandelion" Hanson, my creative partner for over 25 years. I would not even attempt to do this project without him.
The funds will also pay for publishing, design, e-book conversion, printing hardcopies, promotion, rewards and shipping costs for said rewards.
If we exceed our goal, we will use the funds to create a book with an even higher quality appearance, more artwork, expand rewards, and perhaps begin the process of putting together books for younger children so that they can better understand autism through the eyes of colorful fantasy characters.
Note on Rewards
Despite the later estimated delivery dates for some of the higher rewards all backers will get most of the rewards as early as they become available. The later dates are strictly for estimated delivery for individualized artwork.
Not to sound too corny, but I feel my whole life has led me to this project and I will be eternally grateful to all that help us make "Legends of the Boo-Monster" a reality.
We are shipping internationally. If you're outside of the United States and add ten dollars to your donation to defray international shipping charges we'd appreciate it.
I've been asked this by my wife, my artist, my therapist, and several other folks.
The simple answer is that I want to get this project funded and make it as beautiful a book as possible. When I was figuring out how much we'd need to make that happen I realized that adding anything for me personally might raise the bar too high. As most of you know, Kickstarter is all or nothing. Now, if we get overfunded I might use that money to make it easier for me to finish the project without worrying about how clinchy finances are going to be this summer, because they will be, but the book itself is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If we make our goal and in November I can hold this labor of love in my hands I'll feel like the richest man in the world.
If we get funded, the book will be for sale through Amazon's print-on-demand service and as funding permits there will be a limited run of books that I'll be shipping from home, right here in Flint, Michigan, as well as at conventions. Hopefully, one day in the near future the book will be available at stores. I will be shopping the book around to publishers when it's completed, but my main goal is to have it available to those who want it as soon as I possibly can.
The electronic version of the book will available through Amazon and other e-book providers.
There are three beautiful women, and if you look closely, an adorable puppy, along with a still of the super-cute real life Boo-Monster in the trailer. Why on Earth would I include my scruffy mug in there and ruin everything? ;-)
