Following a critically acclaimed theatrical tour, we are turning Kinetics into a short feature film - with the aim that others will continue to draw value from this unique story.

*Note: Having received generous offline donations already, we are now aiming to raise £20,000 as opposed to the £30,000 stated in the above video*

Hi, my name is Sue Wylie and I'm a writer and actress, and six years ago I was diagnosed with Parkinson's. Despite my diagnosis coming as a huge shock and bringing with it various challenges - the experiences and people I have met as a result have been a massive source of inspiration, and led me to writing the play Kinetics.

Kinetics is based upon my own true story and follows the unlikely friendship between an exceptionally bright but bored student who finds release in Parkour (aka free running), and a middle aged women with early onset Parkinson's. Two characters at polar opposites, but both with a shared desire to move. The play takes an honest and open look at what it is like to live with a chronic condition, while bringing humour and empathy to deliver a very human story.

Last year the play toured 12 venues to critical acclaim around the South-West of England after being awarded Arts Council funding. Sell-out performances were met with overwhelming feedback that the play needed to be seen by a wider audience, regardless of whether individuals had a personal link with Parkinson's.

The play was coupled with an open Q&A session led by a health professional after each performance. This provided a valuable opportunity for audience members to discuss various challenging topics that are often difficult to raise or share with family and friends. The cathartic effect the play has had on audience members moved me on a very personal level and confirmed the need for it to be seen on a wider scale.

To give you a further flavour of the play, below are some shorts clips from previous performances - it is, however, worth stressing the film we will produce will far far surpass what you see below. We want to bring the impact and intensity the live performance delivered through a professionally cut film (hence the campaign).

“Really feel this play would be excellent on television. It would do so much to increase understanding and empathy towards all types of conditions.” - Audience Member

“Accept, adapt, adjust is a lovely message. It was a beautiful piece and so impressive how something so amazing has come out of such horrid news.” - Audience Member

During the tour we had people from across the UK and US reaching out asking when and where they would be able to see the play. However, a play is naturally limited in the audience numbers it can reach. We are therefore looking to create a professionally filmed version of the play - which will provide people around the world the opportunity to watch and hopefully draw value from the story.

The play also covers important topics around patient empowerment, breaking bad news and provides real insight as to what is like living with a chronic condition. As a result, a number of universities, hospitals and  Parkinson’s UK have expressed an interest in turning Kinetics into a training aid for medical professionals. This is such an exciting development and has given me even more drive and determination to turn Kinetics into a film.

“This project will enhance our experience and also demonstrate how the humanities and specifically narrative theatre can educate us all in a way that bioscientific data and theory cannot.”
Dr James Gilbert, Devon and Exeter Hospital. Student Course Facilitator.

We have an experienced director, film crew and cast all in place ready to go.

The expertise, experience and drive is all there – we just need your help to turn our vision into a reality.

I myself have over 30+ years experience as a professional actress in TV, radio and stage. We also have the fantastic Tom Martin of Band Films preparing to direct the film. Tom has shot and directed features, commercials and promos for 15 years and is one of the founders of Band Films, a production company based at their own studios in Bristol. And finally we've had the long standing support of Dorchester Arts who continue to be heavily involved in our project.

We feel extremely fortunate to have Band Films supporting the production of Kinetics. Their belief in the play has led them to offering the production and filming at a discounted cost – which we cannot thank them enough for.

We have also been kindly given generous donations outside of our Kickstarter campaign.

This leaves us with a final £20,000 target to turn this play into a film.

This will cover all pre-production, production, casting and post production costs – and help us produce a truly unique feature film!

Stretch target: £25,000 – we are obviously passionate to make this film and are therefore making savings wherever possible. If we were to surpass our target it would enable us to simply make a bigger and better film which could include parkour drone sequences, improved set designs, along with better sound mixing, music and special FX etc.

It would mean the world to me for Kinetics to be my legacy and contribution to support others living with a chronic condition. Thank you for taking the time to review my campaign.

Risks and challenges

We currently have an experienced director, film crew and cast in place ready to film in Autumn.

As you will see from the above - collectively we have a very experienced team that are well equipped to produce this film to a high standard.

We also successfully managed Arts Council funding last year to tour 12 venues around the South-West of England.

Challenges we may face could result from injury/illness to cast members - but we have strong networks to find new cast if any problems were to arise.
