About this project
WE WANT TO THANK ALL OF OUR BACKERS FOR MAKING THIS CAMPAIGN A HUGE SUCCESS!
NOTE: If you missed your chance to preorder a Thalia Capo during our Kickstarter campaign, we have setup a Late Backer Preorder Page. Late backers will still get the Thalia Capo before they are available to the general public, but Late Backer Orders will not begin shipping until mid-January 2015. ( All Kickstarter orders will be fulfilled first! )
Please also check out thaliacapos.com for more information, as we will no longer be able to make changes to this site once our Kickstarter Campaign is over.
The unique mechanical design of the Thalia Capo allows you to easily capo your guitar using just your fretting hand! And that means you can easily slide it up and down the neck too! The short video animation showcases the patent-pending design and the internal mechanics of how it all works (note: this is a 3D animation but all other images on this site and on our website are actual photographs of the product):
The Thalia Capo is also a complete rethinking of the capo as a piece of art. Our aesthetic goal was to create a truly beautiful capo that would match or compliment your guitar, so that when in use or even when clamped to the headstock it can act as jewelry for your guitar. We will be offering the Thalia Capo in both chrome and gold finishes with two exotic wood inlays and two types of abalone inlay. This short video showcases the finish and inlay options we are offering for the Thalia Capo:
Note: I say in the above video that the capo weighs almost half a pound. We just reweighed it and it actually weighs 90 grams or 3.17 oz so I was a bit off. It still feels substantial in the hand, its just not THAT heavy ;)
USABILITY & FUNCTIONALITY
Our new design is easy and intuitive to use. It also makes it possible to easily slide the capo from fret to fret. This opens up all kinds of playing possibilities: you can now make very smooth transitions between songs or even compose songs with key changes in the middle of the song.
This short video showcases the Thalia Capo's ease of use:
FINISH & INLAY OPTIONS
We know that tastes vary, so we created a lineup of beautiful designs with either chrome, black chrome or gold finishes and a selection of beautiful exotic wood and abalone shell inlays.
With all 5 of of our Stretch Goals met we now have over 30 options to choose from! Click here to see all of our options!
EXOTIC WOOD SERIES (click image to see all 30 options!)
ABALONE SERIES (click image to see static images of all!)
PERSONALIZED EXOTIC WOOD SERIES
We are also offering personalization as a higher level reward, allowing you to laser cut your name or initials into our Exotic Wood Inlays. Shown below with your choice of abalone underlay or with the metal finish shining through. (Click to see larger images)
We know that many of you will give the Thalia Capo as a gift, so we wanted a package that would showcase the beauty of our capos. We also wanted to create something that could be reused as a case. So we ditched the horrible clamshells that are prevalent in this space, in favor of a sturdy polycarbonate case/box that uses the capo's own clamping action to hold it suspended in space. You can easily see the beautiful inlay and metallic finish through our packaging and it fits perfectly in your guitar case.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT STATUS
As you can see, we are pretty far along in the development process, but at the same time we need your help to get us over the hump. We have created dozens of 3D printed and machined prototypes and created single-cavity die cast molds and single cavity injection molds so that we can be assured that the product can be manufactured and that we can begin to fulfill orders. We know all too well the perils of short cuts in product development, so we have taken the necessary time and steps to ensure our success. We have documented our product development process to date if you would like to see what we have been through. Now we need backers to help us fund the creation of multi-cavity die cast molds, complete reliability testing, buy inventory and begin production. With your help we can finally make the Thalia Capo a reality!
Our story begins with an 8-year old girl with a big idea. One day in 2010 as my daughter Thalia was playing guitar, she gazed up at the poster of Taylor Swift on her wall. Taylor was holding a beautifully inlaid Hawaiian Koa Taylor guitar. As she focused on Taylor's guitar, she had a big idea. Thalia was using a capo that day, but as she stared at the poster she envisioned a much more beautiful capo for Taylor, one that would perfectly match her Hawaiian Koa guitar. That was the seed of an idea that would ultimately lead to the invention of the capo that now bears her name.
I instantly loved her idea and promised to help her develop it! But I also thought that if we were going to design this beautiful new capo, that we should also completely redesign the way the capo functions to make it much easier to use. So we went to work and some 70 prototypes later it was finally ready! The patent-pending design of our new Capo makes it easy to apply with just your fretting hand and of course it also features exotic wood and abalone shell inlays, just as Thalia had imagined. As for Thalia, she is quite pleased with her new capo and hopes to someday meet Taylor Swift, so that she can give her a Thalia Capo (or two) and thank her for the inspiration. So if any of you happen to know Taylor, please let her know about our campaign!

* Please note that John Chapman is using a modified fretpad on his classical guitar. This is one of the options that we will unlock if we hit our final stretch goal.
Due to the amazing support of our backers, the following options were UNLOCKED during this campaign when we hit the funding targets outlined below:
Stretch Goal #1: $60,000 (GOAL ACHIEVED! OPTION UNLOCKED)
We added the option to laser engrave either the Celtic Knot pattern or the Flower Lei pattern onto our Hawaiian Koa inlays at no extra charge!
Koa Stretch Goal #2: $75,000 (GOAL ACHIEVED! OPTION UNLOCKED)
We added two additional inlay options: White Mother of Pearl to our Abalone Series and Birdseye Maple to our Exotic Wood series.
Stretch Goal #3: $100,000 (GOAL ACHIEVED! OPTION UNLOCKED)
We added Black Chrome as a Finish Option.
Stretch Goal #4: $125,000 (GOAL ACHIEVED! OPTION UNLOCKED)
We added Wenge and Lacewood to our Exotic Wood Series!
Stretch Goal #5: $150,000 (GOAL ACHIEVED! OPTION UNLOCKED)
We added the option for a "Capo Tuning Kit," which will allow you to turn you capo into a 12-String or a Classical capo; this kit will also allow you to tune the capo for guitars with extreme fretboard radii. (please note that this option requires the creation of new injection molds and thus this option will not ship until later; estimated at late Jan/Feb). For information on the Tuning Kit please see our Update #8
Thalia also got a French Bull Dog Puppy as part of our final stretch goal!!!! Here is a short video of Thalia with her new puppy:

Risks and challenges
As in all product development projects there is risk. However, we have already jumped over many of the hardest hurdles, including the completion of the design and the development of the tooling to make the product. We have developed dozens of products for numerous companies so we know what it takes to bring a high quality product to market. Now we need to replicate our tooling into multi-cavity production tools, complete reliability testing and buy inventory. All of the inlays will be laser cut in Orinda, CA so we are very confident that we will be able to complete all of this in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
