What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

STRETCH GOAL added: 100,000 USD

For the stretch goal, we would like to give you an useful gift which perfectly matches the style of 4D Concrete Watch. Hence, we asked our leather strap supplier to use the same leather to make some leather key rings, and we’d like to give them away to all the backers if we can reach over 100,000 USD - We are getting very close to it! So please share our project to your friends and family, help us to make this stretch possible!

Rubber Strap now available

One of the benefits of running a design studio in Taiwan is that we can find many professional suppliers nearby, so it is convenient for us to understand the materials and production restrains a lot easier. After examining many test samples from different suppliers, we decided our newly developed Rubber Strap will be made from Fluoroelastomer, for me it is the best material for our watch. It’s durable, strong and most importantly heavy. This dense yet soft material makes the strap surprisingly comfortable to wear. However, there is one main issue to Fluoroelastomer - it is very expensive to make, the cost of raw material is nearly 20 times more than silicon. However, we’d like to show our gratitude to all of for making this project possible, you can pledge 30 USD more for getting a set of Rubber Strap for your 4D Concrete Watch (MSRP 80 USD). We have put a lot work into making this Rubber Strap perfect for our watch, please check it out and hope you will like it!

Concrete awakening

I will never forget the awe I felt when I first set eyes on Omotesando Hills in Tokyo.

Omotesando Hills, a comfortable, avant-garde shopping center, held a personal significance; its designer, Tadao Ando, was an architect I had greatly admired since college. To see the building in person after learning about Ando and his works — and to feel the raw dust of the exposed concrete with my own fingers — was an incredibly moving experience. I fully understood the genius of using a single, simple material to enhance space through light and shadow; and it was the first time that I had vividly experienced the power of great design. I was deeply touched.

Following the trip, I dove headfirst into the world of concrete design. Along with my partner, Yiting Cheng, and our studio, we set out to design impressive, minimalistic products suited for city life, and to convey an attitude that is straightforward and genuine. More than a decade later, we have our own workshop and a six-strong team dedicated to making 22 Design Studio products.

Crowd-funded futures

Two years ago, we launched our 4th Dimension Wristwatch on Kickstarter. The crowdfunding campaign was a huge success, inspiring not only our team but our suppliers as well. Together, we tackled the challenge of mass-production, established innovative manufacturing protocols, and perfected every detail of the 4th Dimension Wristwatch.

During the process, we met many fellow watch-lovers. We discovered expert watchmakers from all over the world, formed relationships with watch enthusiasts, asked questions and shared knowledge. Urged on by this community, we realized it was genuinely possible for us to make a truly high-end, mechanical wristwatch. Inspired, we set out to design a watch that would elevate our technical expertise and fully express our craftsmanship.

▲The expanding 4th Dimension family, including Wall clock, 42mm quartz watch, 30mm quartz watch and 4D Concrete Watch Automatic.

Painstaking progress

Designing a watch is a long, complex and at times frustrating process. Each line and surface has to be carved and repeatedly polished to a mirror finish. The slightest deviation, even on a 0.5-mm scale, can cause dramatic variations. Every step requires minute adjustments that are only possible by refining a series of three-dimensional mock-ups. This process can seem endless, and even once satisfied with the mock-ups, working prototypes uncover new challenges and details to improve.

Designing the 4D Concrete Watch required ten different 3D-printed mock-ups and three working prototypes to perfect. The refinement process required technical support from our manufacturers and a great deal of feedback from watch-loving friends (we are grateful to each of the 3000-plus online friends who filled out our developmental survey). Reaching the finish line also required a certain amount of enthusiasm and perseverance.

▲ A selection of mock-ups created during the development process. Some of the adjustments may be hard to pick out due to their minute scale.

The 4D Concrete Watch

“Wearing a wristwatch shows an acceptance and appreciation of time’s passing —the joy of this watch is in the rotation of the watch hands and the play of light and shadow they create on the concrete stair dial.” — Sean Yu.

22 Design Studio’s 4D Concrete Watch brings architecture to life on your wrist, displaying time’s passage through an exquisitely crafted space. The passing of the three-dimensional watch hands across the cured-concrete dial creates a unique play of light and shadow, while the movement’s echo in the darkness below the spiral stairs serves as a constant reminder of the 4th dimension: time. If you do not wear the watch, removing its kinetic energy power source, it stops after 38 hours, resting in silence.

Each individual component — be it the steel, brass, concrete, or the leather — maintains a raw beauty, projected to its fullest potential by meticulous design. As an ensemble, this watch is the culmination of a decade spent refining our design and craft in line with our commitment to unflinching urban attitude.

Cured-concrete dial

The richly textured and robust concrete dial is the centerpiece of the 4D Concrete Watch. Over years of partnership with specialist concrete suppliers we have vastly improved our production technique. The result is a unique concrete mix — high-strength concrete that solidifies quickly, has minimal shrinkage, and is a joy to work with.

To prevent cracks or fractures, we also reinforce the concrete with fiberglass wires. When the concrete dial is formed and taken out of the mold, it sits in a temperature-and-humidity-controlled curing room for 14 days. This curing process ensures maximum strength, and gives each concrete dial a unique pattern.

▲The concrete dial of Minimal edition; each stair has a height of 0.3 mm.

Luminous three-dimensional hands

We designed the world’s first and only three-dimensional watch hands to pair with our unique spiral staircase watchface. These one-of-a-kind hands cleave seamlessly through space, surpassing typical two-dimensional watch design to frame the passage of time, the fourth dimension, within a consistently three-dimensional space.

▲All three hands must be parallel horizontally and vertically.

Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1 mechanical movement

The 4D Concrete Watch is our first mechanical watch, so we paid particular attention to selecting a reliable, high-quality movement. The Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1 movement met all of our criteria: automatic winding, 28,000 vibrations per hour, 38-hour power reserve.

For full specifications, please visit: http://www.sellita.ch/images/stories/documents/SW200_1_33_20150226.pdf

▲The movement is visible through a sapphire crystal back cover.

Steel or brass bezel

The 4D Concrete Watch bezel is made of either 316L stainless steel or brass. The most alluring properties of brass are its varying colors and lusters. Prior to oxidation, brass is shiny and gold in color but after some time, it oxidizes and takes on a subdued copper hue. Even the wearer’s perspiration and fingerprints will leave marks that develop a warm and well-worn look.

Metal date atrium with embedded magnifying glass

The Refined edition uses an innovative date atrium. Taking advantage of the space beneath the stairs, we embedded a stainless-steel tube into the cured-concrete dial. This complements the watch’s minimalist architectural feel. Instead of gluing the magnifying piece onto the glass, we affixed it to the date atrium, a practical solution that reinforces the watch’s stylistic integrity.

▲The Signature edition brass look has a brass date atrium with a 1.8x magnifying glass

Handcrafted leather watch strap

The 4D Concrete Watch is a heavy timepiece, weighing 110 grams. It has substantial heft in the hand. To support its bulk, we selected sturdy Italian natural tanned leather, handmade by our trusted watchband crafter into 3.6 mm thick bands. We then paired these with our 22 Design Studio buckle to ensure that the watch stays securely fastened.

▲handmade Italian leather strap and 22 Studio's buckle.

The Minimal edition, simple and clean

The neatly designed spiral staircase dial has a date atrium on the 3 o’clock spot. While clearly showing the date, the atrium also peeks into the movement’s inner workings. The Minimal edition conveys the essential elements of our design concept and is suitable for our low-key, more reserved friends; it comes with either a steel or brass bezel.

The Signature edition, clean-cut and brilliant

The dial on the Signature edition naturally features our unique spiral staircase, but adds a high-detail scale. The bezel top is shaped at a precision angle and polished to a mirror finish. The date atrium, shaped and polished in the same way as the bezel top, allows you to see the date clearly.

We are very proud of the Refined edition and feel the fine details reflect a higher level of timepiece craftsmanship. This edition is the result of our core belief in continual challenge and improvement. The bezel also comes in stainless steel or brass.

Kickstarter-limited Shadow edition

We love experimenting with material textures and observing the interplay of light and shadow. For the Shadow Edition, 22 worked entirely in black, but selected materials with differing levels of darkness to heighten awareness of texture and form. The bezel of the Shadow Edition is PVD-coated black and the SW200-1 Caliber is modified with a black date disc and black oscillating weight.

Introducing Contour Ballpoint Pen

Besides timepieces, 22 Design Studio produces jewelry and writing tools made entirely of concrete and 316 steel. To mark the launch of the 4D Concrete Watch campaign, we will release the latest addition to our collection: the  “Contour Ballpoint Pen”.

Our Contour Ballpoint Pen is made of 22’s high density concrete and 316 Stainless steel. The pen weight is 40 gram.  We put substantial effort into designing the pen clip so that its structure is exposed and clear to understand. The body of the pen is made of concrete and is finely contoured, offering a unique grip. Over years of use, the tool will become darker and its rigid edges smoother as they respond and adapt to your hand.

About 22 Design Studio

At 22 Design Studio, we take inspiration, materials and textures from Taipei, Taiwan – the city that surrounds us. Here in our studio, a small, passionate team makes timepieces, accessories and stationery.

All our products are handcrafted, honed through trial, error and adaptation into authentic and unexpected design. Our name is “22” because it’s an age that captures an attitude, an attitude unafraid to follow impulse and instinct to natural (yet urban) conclusions. Several international media have followed us on our journey. We welcome you to do the same.

First-time mechanical watch customers please be aware of a few things:

1. Mechanical watches are powered by the winding mainspring in the movement. We use a self-winding movement, so, as long as you are moving when you wear the watch, the pivot in the semicircular rotor will swivel and automatically wind the movement. Once the mainspring is fully wound, it will store power for up to 38 hours and the watch will keep on ticking as long as you wear it regularly. If you do not wear the watch for two days, the movement will run out of power.

2. Compared to a quartz or electronic watch, mechanical watches keep time with slightly less precision. The SW200-1 movement has a standard deviation of ±20-10 seconds per day. Therefore, if absolutely precise time is imperative for you, a mechanical watch might not be the best choice.

3. Mechanical watches are composed of purely mechanical parts. After a long period of time, the lubrication that keeps the gears running smoothly may dry out, or friction might result in metal fragmentation that could affect precision. If you find that your watch is keeping time less accurately — off by more than two minutes per day — and if a timegrapher (a machine used to measure the health of a watch’s movement) indicates that the minimum amplitude is less than 240°, we recommend sending the watch back for maintenance. The ideal maintenance period is once every two years.

4. The accuracy of a mechanical movement can be affected by magnetism. Therefore, while wearing or storing your watch, keep it away from highly magnetized objects such as powerful magnets, stereos, motors, and magnetic mattresses.

Risks and challenges

Making a mechanical watch requires the management of a diverse supplier chain. Watchmaking is a delicate art and in most markets, almost every component is made by a separate factory. Our 4D Concrete Watch requires 10 different suppliers to make the bezel, crown, dial base, dial, hands, glass, buckle, leather strap, PVD-coating, and oversee final assembling. Some are large operations, others single craftsmen. This complexity makes it hard for a small studio like us to control quality.

However, Taiwan has a rich watchmaking heritage established over the last 40 years, and while it is something of a dying art because the commercial industry is moving to China, there are still a lot of true watch experts and enthusiasts in Taiwan willing to help studios like us.

Thanks to the strength of these suppliers, 22 Studio has sold over 3,000 concrete quartz watches over the last two years. Our relationships and quality control is tried and tested. We have been developing the new 4D Concrete Watch Automatic for two years and have absolute confidence in our ability to deliver high quality product within the time we promise.
