About a year ago, we launched our first watch right here, on Kickstarter. The Monchard Skytoucher GMT. It was a great success, thanks to our wonderful backers, without whom, we would not be where we are today. We want to, once again, thank all of you who made a contribution towards the launch of the Monchard brand.
After the GMT, we received lots of requests to make an automatic version of the Skytoucher. Well, we listened and now we bring you the "Skytoucher Automatic".
Powered by a 28.800bph heart from the land of the rising sun, it's a classic, softer take on the flieger watch. Still available in two colors, but this time silver and gold, with two different dial colors making the total come to four different watches. Along with this new model comes new straps, both leather and mesh, giving you the option to match your watch to your outfit. Or the other way around.
Perhaps the biggest change to the Skytoucher is the movement. Unseen to the wearer, it reliably ticks away behind the decorated case back. The movement we chose for the Automatic is the Miyota cal. 9015, one of the top movements from Miyota. It's a date complication movement that beats at 28.800 bph, giving the second hand a smooth 8 beats per second motion. Coming from one of the biggest manufacturers in Japan, powering countless watches around the world, a 42 hours power reserve, 24 jewels and shock absorbed balance staff we said this was the right movement for us.
The design of the Skytoucher Automatic follows in the steps of its predecessor, the GMT. The same lines are used and the DNA is still a flieger. On this model however, we wanted to go down a more classic route, with an all polished case, sunburst dial and applied indices and logo. All this combined make the Skytoucher Automatic just as home on the beach as while out on town.
The case back is the one thing that fans of the original Skytoucher will find familiar. It's the same elaborate design, the propeller echoing the spirit of flight and the individual serial number for each watch engraved. The case back also reads "Fortune favours the brave", a saying that we feel fits well both with the adventurous history of fliegers but also for people of today, still opting for a timepiece rather than their cell phone for time telling.
"Superluminova C3" lights up the hands and small marks by the indices. Giving the Skytoucher Automatic readability like a true flieger watch.
The "Side plate" on the Skytoucher family of watches came as a nod to other great pilot watches in history. The inscription is borrowed from the world of aircraft ID-numbers, often with country code designations. SE stands for Sweden, AP for Automatic Pilot and 17 is the birth year of the watch.
When ordering through the Kickstarter campaign, you'll get an additional strap, free of charge. Just as an extra bonus, and a token of our appreciation for helping us bringing this new model to life.
Risks and challenges
Like with any project of this size and kind, there are risks and challenges involved. We feel confident however, this being our second Kickstarter, that we'll be able to deliver as promised.
As with our first, and successful project, we'll give you, the backers, regular updates and answer any queries you might have along the way.
We've established a good working relationship with a big OEM watch factory outside Hong Kong, and already produced our first watch together with them. We feel completely confident in their abilities to complete an order in a timely fashion, and to our standards. We must, however, inform you that delays can happen. If such unforseen delays do happen, we'll let you know as soon as we do, and throughout.
We've had many, many people, both in and outside of the watch community give us high praise for our first watch. And we're confident that the Automatic will be just as well received.
For us, this is not just making a watch happen, it's a dream.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
