Edible. is a 436 page cookbook and nutritional reference guide. Beautifully presented, Edible. is printed in full colour, with images for 200+ recipes. Alongside each recipe is a holistic discussion of nutrition and health which sorts fact from fiction, with over 1500 references to scientific journals. This information is then expanded out into a wider discussion of ethics and sustainability, with a section on gardening, food production and lifestyle.
Work on Edible began in 2012 and took over two years- writing, editing, cooking, photographing, referencing, and editing again, with help from my amazing graphic designer Alexandra Norman, as well as an indexer and more than a few copyeditors. Practice prints of softcover books were completed within Australia early 2014, and hardcover proofs sourced from international printers. The book is now completed. Offset printing began August 26, expected to be completed by the end of September. (Shipping time to Australia is 30 days, with an additional week to pass through customs, and then shipped to our door- all 9.83m³ of pretty books).
The amount listed here is the cost for the offset print run, including shipping. The order also includes promo leaflets and display stands.
Edible is plant-based, dairy-free, gluten-free, naturally sweetened wholefoods. It is cane-sugar free, strict vegan, omits nightshade vegetables which can be problematic for some people, and focusses on low allergenic foods. We have a matching PDF outlining which recipes are also coconut, banana or nut free, and which are low GI or low oil, for those on a severely restricted diet. The recipes are simple and easy for anyone to do at home.
Edible discusses the implications of food production for human nutrition and sustainability, and is fully referenced to journal articles (comprehensive and thesis length!).
The book is packaged to be appropriate as gift. It weighs 1.75kg and is hardcover. It will be printed on 128gsm paper with matte oil varnish and section sewing, with a green ribbon. For more information, please see the website www.ediblethebook.com, where you can join our mailing list, and order copies once the kickstarter is complete.
Risks and challenges
When I started Edible it was going to be 120 pages and I was going to print it at Officeworks, but then it became so much more than that. This project was so much more demanding of time and energy than I ever anticipated. The main challenges so far have been the amount of time required for copyediting, graphic design, referencing and indexing, to get the book to a high standard. This is done now.
Once we pay the final invoice on the print (which is the amount being fundraised here), the books will be delivered to australia. The remaining challenge is ensuring quality in the final print and avoiding further delays in receipt in distribution. I was planning on distributing books myself- however after a recent road trip from Cairns to Newcastle approaching stores with proofs and receiving an overwhelmingly positive response, we now intend to organise a distributer.
Due to prohibitive cost, in future we will ship through Amazon or a freight forwarder- as you will notice above, international shipping is currently $40 per book internationally. There will also be a large amount of time, energy and money required to launch and promote the book- the better the initial funding and sales go, the better prepared we will be for promotion. This will come down to hard work on the part of myself, but I am more than ready and willing to begin the next phase of the edible adventure.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
