Musica Automata is a name of an upcoming album by Leonardo Barbadoro, an Italian electronic music producer and electroacoustic music composer from Florence known also under the alias Koolmorf Widesen. The album will include music for robots controlled from a laptop computer.
These robots are more than 50 acoustic instruments (piano, organs, wind instruments, percussions etc) which are part of the Logos Foundation in Gent (Belgium). They receive digital MIDI messages that contain precise informations for their performance.
Musica Automata is a multi-sensorial experience where the listener can hear and view where the sounds come from; one can observe the robots and find a precise correlation between the movement of the instrumenst and the sound perceived.
The robot music performance, due to its extreme precision, can often surpass the ability of a human performer and, therefore, introduce completely new expressive possibilities. However next to the precise digital controls, the real performance and acoustic sound of instruments playing in a real acoustic space is preserved. Despite this particular instrumentation in fact, it’s the music that leads the instruments and not the opposite; the emotional impact of the music is still there due to the versatility of the robots, which are not limited to mere artificial reproduction.
It’s a performance that comes from a human idea, however devoid of direct human contact with the instrument. This means that the conceived musical idea, once processed and translated into MIDI language, is executed by robots without losing its artistic value in any way.
I need your support in order to finish composing, recording and producing this record. With your help, I will demonstrate that robots are a tool to create something unique with completely new expressive possibilities that we would never be able to experience otherwise with human performers. I would very much appreciate it if you can donate, share and support this project. Thank you so much in advance for your consideration and generosity!

About Koolmorf Widesen
In 2002 I took on the name Koolmorf Widesen and began composing my first pieces. Early in 2007 I released my first official self-titled cd for the Roman label (ECG). After that, there were two years of hard work: many intense live performances around Europe (where I shared the stage with artists like Apparat, Venetian Snares, The Herbaliser, Dj Spooky, Fuck Buttons, Luke Vibert, Shackleton, Legowelt, 808 State, The Bug, just to mention a few) and some meticulous music writing composition. These two things gave birth to the two drivers which exist in Melodies Fork Now, my last album released on the EVES label in february 2009. The CD, acclaimed by the press, span from acoustic music influences to nervous and abrasive jungle.
Since Melodies Fork Now I worked as a sound designer, co-artistic director at EVES records, mastering engineer, composer for contemporary dance choreographies and I have also joined an electroacoustic project to experiment with sewing machines, programming and digital processing, field recordings and surround. In 2014 I finally released “JX-EP” on Wi-Ru Records, which is a collection of 5 tracks made using exclusively analog synthesizers and drum machines.
In 2015 I realized a composition called Musica Automata for 19 acoustic instruments controlled by a computer. The composition, which is still unreleased, was documented by a video which was presented in some international festivals in New York, Providence, Montreal, Rome, Verona, La Spezia and Florence.

Logos Foundation is a no-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of new music through musical productions, concerts, art performances, technological research projects and other activities related to contemporary music. The Logos Foundation (and its concert hall, the Logos Tetrahedron) is based in Ghent, Belgium. Godfried-Willem Raes is the founder and current director of the Foundation.
Over the last forty years, Logos Foundation has projected and built over sixty robots that are now part of the <M & M> robot orchestra. The foundation also developed a system capable of detecting the movement of human gestures using a doppler sonar effect through radar technology. "Invisible Instrument" is a totally wireless system based on a detailed analysis of naked human body reflex waves exposed to ultrasonic or microwave radiations. A recognition software is able to discern twelve precise gestures. Mr. W. Raes has developed a kind of dance called Namuda (Naked Music Dance) based on this technology
Risks and challenges
This project is quite ambitious for me and I hope that there wont be any delays realizing it. But unforeseen circumstances can happen sometimes, despite our best efforts.
The timeline for delivery is quite realistic but if anything changes you will be updated here for sure.
