The Light Clock

Welcome to The Light Clock, part art-piece, part timepiece, it's a modern take on the classic analogue clock. Where a traditional clock face uses hands to tell the time, The Light Clock turns your whole wall into a timepiece through a striking display of coloured light. You have the power to choose from millions of colours, allowing you to perfectly complement your existing décor, or simply to match your mood. RRP after Kickstarter is AU$299 so get the Kickstarter price while you can!
To create the hour and minute hands, The Light Clock projects light in two different colours. At first glance this might seem complicated, but very quickly you’ll notice that you can read it with ease.
In this example we’ve used yellow light as the hour hand, and blue light as the minute hand. Comparing each Light Clock with the corresponding traditional displays, you can see how each colour comes to an edge where a hand would normally be. Click for an animated example.
The Light Clock uses 120 individual LEDs, each able to display over 16 million colours. This gives you infinite possibilities for tailoring The Light Clock to your environment or mood. Customise all of the features of The Light Clock:
- Colour
- Blending
- Brightness
- Night Mode
- Seconds Hand
- Time Zone
- Hour Markings
The Light Clock can connect to your existing WiFi network, allowing for quick and easy customisation. When you first plug in The Light Clock, your device recognises your WiFi signal. Then simply enter your network details; The Light Clock will be accessible from practically any other web-enabled device on your network. Being connected to the internet also allows the light clock to keep perfect time.
This easy-to-use web app is available on Mac and PC, iOS and Android, and any other device with browser access. If you can access the internet on it, you can probably control The Light Clock with it. We have even used a Kindle!

The Light Clock is designed with a programmable night mode to create a soft and ambient glow for after dark. Set your desired sleep and wake times using the web app and the Light Clock will automatically turn off all but a few LEDs. This minimalist setting ensures that you get a good night's rest.
For those of you who possess a desire to tinker, The Light Clock opens up even more possibilities. We are firm believers in open source projects and The Light Clock is built upon a standard ESP8266 12-E WiFi module and Arduino IDE. Once the Kickstarter is complete, we will release all schematics and full source code, allowing you to build or modify The Light Clock under the GNU General Public Licence.
$1 (Approx US$1): Thank you so much!
Every pledge counts and will be remembered in both the source code and on the web-page
$25 (Approx US$18): The Light Clock Sundial
Want to support the project, but don't want an entire Light Clock? At this pledge level you will get a sundial in the shape of our logo as a memento of the campaign. These will never be available again.
$199 (Approx US$145): The Light Clock
Assembled with care and delivered to your door. This is what you came here for. Includes power adaptor for your country.
$499 (Approx US$359): The PERSONALISED Light Clock
We will video-chat on Skype and create a custom face-panel just for you. Wood, steel, leather, engraving, artwork. We will also pre-program your favourite colour combination so it's ready to go, out of the box.
We have planned our timeline and will ship during March/April next year.
We’re Chris and Joe! We grew up in Canberra, Australia, and this project has really allowed us to play to our strengths. Chris brings over five years of professional experience as an industrial and manufacturing engineer, while Joe is approaching ten years in the information systems and digital media industry. We both have a love for tinkering and building things.
Until now, The Light Clock has been a passion project. It has required long nights and busy days, all of which couldn't have happened without the support of our friends and families. Thank you!

Riesgos y desafíos
The Light Clock is ready to be manufactured and distributed on a global scale. We have created the prototypes, programmed the software, tested the parts, and developed the supply chain.
We have considered “design-for-manufacture” from day one. Chris has worked as an engineer in multiple factories since 2008 and understands the difficulties in translating a prototype design to a manufacturable part. Accordingly, the design has been built with as few components as possible. The main-board contains all of the required circuitry to power, command, and communicate with the other components; the LEDs are pre-ordered with plug-in connectors so no soldering is required; and the chassis is designed with mounting points already in place, meaning that everything comes together seamlessly.
We understand that supply chain management is a complex process, however we've already chosen the the manufacturers we want to partner with. We've spoken with many, we've received multiple samples of different components, and we've selected those that met our stringent quality requirements. Ultimately, we’re ready to launch; we just need the funding for tooling and minimum order quantities.
As with any manufacturing process there is the possibility for delay. We are however confident in that we have already done as much of the work as possible up-front, and will of course communicate with you at every stage of the process, particularly should any delays occur.
