About this project
A real barber shop is a very special piece of America. A place with true character that has been defined over the years, by the man with the scissors and his loyal patrons. The walls are covered with memorabilia and pictures inspired by the small town it was built around. Upon entering, you can feel the history of each shop and can only imagine the stories each barber could share.
Everyday, another one of these American gems is put out of business because the landlord triples the rent to make way for a Super Cuts or other corporate tenant. A lifetime of work, friendship, and memories flushed down the drain. In the not too distant future these classic shops, and the art of barbering, will be a thing of the past. There will be no more scissor cuts and straight razor shaves; just a bunch of hack jobs by some clown with a pair of electric clippers. Each shop will be turned into a fancy salon with "stylists" who are just looking to make a buck.
For the past 11 months we have traveled to New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Arizona, and throughout California to document these old barber shops. It has been an extremely fun and rewarding experience. Unfortunately it has taken a huge toll on our bank accounts. With your help we would like to drive through all contiguous 48 states to document the remaining shops and their barbers. We believe they are all unique and each establishment is an important piece of American History. Each shop has a story and we would like to honor that story in a published photo book and video documentary that will be entered in various film festivals.
What will happen with your donation?
The US is a big place and so unique from state to state. This diversity is what makes each shop so special and such an important thing to document. The majority of your donations will go towards travel expenses (gas, food, hotels, etc.) The remainder will go towards design, production, promotion, and advertising of the book/film.
What happens if we go over 100% funding?
It would be amazing to have enough people believe in this project to fulfill funding. Even more amazing to go over 100%. If that happens, the extra money will allow us to hit the left out states of Alaska and Hawaii. It will also let us achieve a higher level of production on the book/film so that we can deliver a better final product. We may even buy a celebratory beer with it!
Regardless of whether or not this project gets completely funded, we want to thank anyone who has taken the time to check it out. This has become something we are extremely passionate about and we hope you all find it as cool as we do. THANK YOU!!!
Risks and challenges
The hardest part about this project is the cross country travel. It will involve a lot of miles and a lot of hours in a car. Fortunately it is something we are both used to and know when to pick each other up. Burn out is inevitable after weeks on the road, but years of experience have taught us how to pace ourselves and when to take a break. To help this, we have have divided the country into 3 different sections and will cover these sections in three separate trips. Taking time off in between.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Nothing. You won't actually be charged unless this project reaches 100% funding.
