My name is Henry Raker, and I am raising money for my debut album!
I had been hearing a certain type of music in my mind for about two years, but in September of 2017, I realized it was a combination of three categories that the music world has far too few bridges between: the subjective categories of "noise", "sound", and "music". I began to compose an album purposed with combining sounds that I enjoyed.
I had just purchased a portable audio-recorder, so I spent weeks walking around New York City, recording almost every sound I heard. I went out during storms to record rain hitting the river; I waited until after midnight during the week to get clear recordings of my footsteps on the streets; I once spent a whole night smacking piano strings. I tried everything I could to come up with every sound that I could imagine. Only some of these sounds ended up on the album, but I have hours and hours of audio saved for potential future projects.
It took some work, but I managed to get in contact with Darius Jones, one of my musical heroes who lives in the City. He was gracious enough to get together and spend time recording about ten tracks with me. Only a few of those tracks made it onto this album.
I was very keen on getting my brother, Ben Raker, to play on the album, for ever since I started showing interest in music, he started showing me different composers like John Cage and Harry Partch who both influenced me greatly. So, the day after Thanksgiving, Ben and I woke up early to record "Song for Ben".
The goal amount of $500 is for balancing out the costs of recording the music and printing the CDS; anything over that amount will go directly into equipment, album-promotion, and future tours.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me whether it was financially, morally, or emotionally through the process of finishing this album. You know who you are, and I love and appreciate every one of you.
Risks and challenges
Fortunately, with this project, there is only one risk for you with investing in my album, and that is that you do not end up liking the music.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
