I have been working with greenhouses, zoos, and hobbyists over the last four years trying to develop the perfect grow light. We wanted to create something that lasted a long time and was energy efficient to decrease the strain on the environment. But we also needed to develop a bright light that could truly displace the old technologies that dominate the grow industry.
We looked long and hard at LED, but as we read more studies and spoke to customers, we realized that the perfect replacement for the sun had to be full spectrum. People want to grow produce rich in vitamins, flavor, and antioxidants. They want to promote health and well-being in their fish and animals. I am happy to say that we are close to success. But we need your help to finalize this leap in technology and launch this product at a price that is accessible to everyone.
What is the Sunstream 400?
The Sunstream 400 is a state of the art grow light using Light Emitting Plasma (LEP) technology. It is the first real artificial replacement for sunlight. It is the first plasma light priced to fit the needs of professionals and hobbyists alike. It is energy efficient, compact, long lasting, and full spectrum. This sleek fixture will last an average of 50,000 hours or over 7 years at 18 hours a day. It will operate at 265 Watts, cutting over 40% of your energy use while improving the quality of your produce and the quality of life for fish and animals.
We need your help to finish this design and support a launch that reaches the volumes needed for cost effective production. We want to make this technology affordable so all growers, aquariums, zoos, and greenhouses can experience this leap forward.

Full spectrum light promotes healthy, natural growth in plant life. Plant pigments absorb different wavelengths along the spectrum and promote photosynthesis at different stages of growing, flowering, and fruiting. Plasma light has been shown to increase yields, improve the grades of fruit, and increase antioxidants and other health promoting compounds. Full spectrum light is also especially important for reptiles, some mammals, coral and fish.

What is a Plasma Bulb?
You may be wondering what a Light Emitting Plasma bulb (or LEP for short) is.
LEP is a solid state, high intensity bulb. You can think of LEP as a combination of all of the best technologies available today. LEP uses induction to energize its small quartz bulb, there are no electrodes or electricity in the quartz just radio frequency energy. The bulb itself encapsulates salts, gases, and metal halides that are heated into a plasma to create the light. The electronics of the Sunstream are a combination of solid state technology found in devices like LEDs and cell phones. The electronics convert the electricity from an outlet into the radio frequency needed for the bulb.
Why the Sunstream 400?
There are other plasma lights on the market, but the Sunstream 400 is a gamechanger. The Sunstream 400 is being designed as a collaboration between Plasmalyte and the award winning team at Stray Light Optical Technologies. The bulb is powered by Luxim's new Lifi 2.0 plasma engine. It is the culmination of listening to customers, improving reliability and efficiency, and integrating all the necessary components into a streamlined design. The Sunstream 400 is the most attractive plasma fixture to date, will be wet location rated, and offers easy setup and maintenance. With your help, we will set the standard for horticultural lighting for years to come.
Setting up and Using your Sunstream
The Sunstream plasma light is designed to quickly replace your 400W grow lighting system. Just hang the light from a truss or other mount, plug it into a standard 120V outlet, and you will be ready to grow. The power supply works from 100-277V 50/60Hz. So if you want to operate on a different voltage, all you need to do is buy a plug adapter. If you need mounting brackets or a different voltage, the Plasmalyte team can work with you to craft your solution.
This fixture is ideal for the indoor gardener. Its tic tac sized light bulb provides energy efficiency and a close approximation to natural sunlight.
Sunlight is critical to ensure plant growth, and most lighting fixtures just don't have the spectrum to help nourish plants fully. The Sunstream does. It can help your tomatoes, herbs, or whatever indoor plant you grow, to be healthy, produce more, and thrive.
For instance, full spectrum light may improve antioxidant production, promote healthier fruit sizes, and promote sugar or nutrient content in a fruit.
Most animals enjoy sunlight, but often our fish and reptilian pets don't get the sunlight they need.
Reptiles especially need sunlight to produce vitamin D. This has lead to heat lamps for reptiles that are both good and bad. Sometimes they provide too much UVB or too little.
However, the output of Sunstream's LEP bulb provides more natural levels of UVB that your animals need to thrive.

These tests include safety and quality measures to ensure we send you the finest product possible.
Why we need you
We are transitioning a luxury technology to a product that the average grower can afford and benefit from. Reinventing the grow light is no easy task. And to produce products at this great price point, we need to translate our world class engineering into dies for the outer casting, create custom built equipment for testing and assembly, and automate a hefty chunk of the manufacturing. In a nutshell, we need volume.

Risks and challenges
We have already sourced high quality parts for the Sunstream, and the design iterations have been prototyped and tested. However, as we continue to refine the product and move into production, there are inherent risks and challenges involved. The impact of any potential supplier delays should be minimized by the realistic time frame we have established for this project. We will send the product through standard electrical product safety testing. An issue in safety testing, or wet-location testing could foresee-ably push the launch date back until the issue is resolved.
