Join Our Journey - Bringing Community Radio to the Gulf Islands
The Back Story: In July of 2015, Salt Spring Island's only radio station, CFSI was abruptly shut down. It was a huge blow to our community that is still being felt. Several months later, a group got together and decided to work toward bringing the Gulf Islands a new radio station-- this time community-owned, and community-run. In October, the non-profit Gulf Islands Community Radio Society was formed, and a journey began. In May 2016, we launched www.IslandsRadio.ca and you can listen live now!
The Challenge: The first step toward having a radio station is submitting an application to the CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission). As part of that application, we must undertake an engineering study to find the best signal and transmitter locations available for broadcasting within the Gulf Islands. We need your help to fund this study-- $12,000 will cover the expense, and any extra will go toward our portable studio equipment and online radio presence, so we can begin online broadcasting of popular Gulf Islands events, like this summer's Salt Spring Music & Garlic Festival.
The Result: The new station will be available as a public service to the Gulf Islands, creating opportunities to
- tell our stories
- connect with our neighbours
- discover local music, and
- train a new generation of radio producers

Risks and challenges
After submitting our engineering study along with all other materials to the CRTC as part of our licensing application for a terrestrial radio station, there is the possibility we will be denied, or there could be a competition for the bandwidth. We are consulting with seasoned radio industry professionals as our advisors in this process, and will work to minimize potential conflicts which could possibly jeopardize our application.
Meanwhile, we have a dedicated team of volunteers producing programming content for our online radio presence, to launch April 30th, 2016.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
