Beyond Valley Ridge
Beyond Valley Ridge is a children's storybook that sheds light on the clean water crisis that plagues thousands of communities, small and large, worldwide. The story utilizes challenging vocabulary and addresses difficult topics in order to spark a passion for reading and meaningful conversation between parents and children.
While reading the Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis, I found myself intrigued by Lewis’ clever development and personification of his animal characters. I was also inspired by the way he tackled relevant events and elevated young minds by incorporating complex language and vocabulary. (Children's authors don't seem to challenge their readers anymore.)
The main character in Beyond Valley Ridge is David, an impatient, young deer, who is eager to follow in his father's footsteps. We join David as he makes his way from Valley Ridge to Mountain Pass in search of greener grass and a reunion with his father. Along the way David encounters a small community of animals trapped in a dire situation. A devastating storm has forced them to live in deplorable conditions and, as the rainy season comes to an end, they find themselves with little more than a mud puddle for drinking water. Humbled by their needs David's eyes are opened as he begins to see what life is like Beyond Valley Ridge.
David, and young readers alike, will discover that many times our greatest joy is found in the fulfillment of other’s desires rather than our own.
About The Author
Lydia Diaz is a 27 year old wife and mother of two living in Dallas, Texas. A graduate of the University of Central Florida she majored in Psychology and Criminal Profiling. Beyond Valley Ridge is her first book and looks to be just the beginning, with a sequel already in production.
The Kickstarter campaign goal is to raise $2,800 to illustrate, edit and publish Beyond Valley Ridge in an 8.5"x11", paperback, full color format. Yet, the ultimate objective is to share the published book with clean water initiatives, so that they may use it as a means to raise awareness and funds to help dig wells and provide water purification systems to communities that are experiencing a clean water shortage.
