Team Project X Squared
Dear Supernerds, we are really excited to unveil the Labcoat, M.D.! Legend has it that Huffington Post's supernerd-extraordinaire, Cara Santa Maria (Talk Nerdy to Me!, Hacking the Planet), commissioned the creation of a coat that would take nerdy to a whole new level. An actual white coat (the lab coat for healthcare professionals) was sent to Alicia and the rest is history. Due to supply limitations we can only offer 50 of these never-before-seen fashion statements. Get yours today!

Dear Supernerds, we are so close to making this campaign a reality! Alicia has created a new video showcasing the Labcoat, the Jumper and the Hoodie to thank you for your incredible support so far. Project X Squared: It's okay to be awesome
The brainchild of two Caltech scientists and Alicia Hardesty, a full-time fashion designer and part-time nerd: a clever clothing line celebrating the nerd in all of us!
On a mission to link the worlds of art, science and technology, Project X Squared is born. To support us, click “Back This Project”, or on any of the available rewards listed!
The Project X Squared Story:
After filming the finale of Project Runway Season 10, Alicia Hardesty, fashion designer and founder of the clothing line Original Tomboy, was rushing back to Los Angeles for business. On the flight home she took a seat next to a tall, quiet guy who appeared consumed by some complicated mathematical equations spread out on the tray table in front of him. Out of this quantum fluctuation Project X Squared was born.
“Remember when you asked "why?" all the time, drew on walls and built sand castles? We are born scientists, artists, and engineers. The best part about growing up is that you get to take this massive key you have forged over time and use it to unlock the superpowers you knew you had as a kid, but were not ready to wield yet. Wearing something from X2 brings to focus this simple truth: You are now ready to use that key. Unless the Merovingian gets to you first.” - Spiros
And now, the Good Stuff:
Burberry, watch out! This isn't your average run-of-the mill, poorly-fitted lab coat that serves to keep someone like Crystal from contaminating themselves with chemicals and biohazards while hiding in the lab. The semi-sheen nylon used in this piece creates a lightweight outerwear garment that is easy to wear and perfect for spring or summer. The Labcoat is playfully sophisticated & leaves you dressed to impress, whether for an important business meeting or a night-out with your friends. Who knows what discoveries will be made outside of the lab as you explore the world in this amazing piece!
Crystal’s Note: How I’d Style it . . . “out of the box corporate”
"I love this jacket! The neutral tones of the coat and its elegant lines lend themselves easily to a sophisticated tonal palette. I’d wear it with jeans and a t-shirt, but slacks and a dress shirt for work would be really great too. A heeled shoe adds to the elongating effect of the asymmetric zipper and to mix it up add a pop of neon in your clothes or accessories!"
Alicia’s Note: How I’d Style it . . . “high collar play”
"I'm a fan of juxtaposition when I get dressed, especially with this fashionably understated, extremely lightweight jacket. The light weight & luster of this fabric makes me want to wear it with roughed up boots & waxed & worn black denim. I'd also pair it with a super lightweight, loose white or grey tee (wide neck), or button-down shirt & a bow tie. And of course, collar up, not down, jacket unzipped & let loose."
Spiros’s Note: How I’d Style it . . . “minimalist”
"Just the jacket. Nothing else. Not even a hair tie. If you must wear shoes, I would go with Manolo Wang. Is that too risqué? I don't think so."
The jumper is inspired by the creative genius that exists in all of us. Made of waterproof coated silk fabric, it sports roll-up/button-up pants that are also great for spring and summer. This piece is street smart and transitions easily from sneakers to boots, or heels. You won't want to sabotage this masterpiece during your long hours at the studio, however, rolling out for a night on the town in your jumper will certainly get your creative juices flowing.
Alicia’s Note: How I’d Style it . . . “futuristic tomboy”
"No heels for me, but I would wear this jumper with some fresh, clean, sneakers--bright or not, depending on my mood--pants rolled up mid-calf. *undershirt optional* This fabric gives off a futuristic vibe, a sophisticated street wear look for this original tomboy."
Crystal’s Note: How I’d Style it . . . “edgy and comfortable”
"I am going to be honest - jumpers are usually out of my fashion comfort zone, but after I put this one on, I think that might change. The gorgeous waterproof silk fabric has a luxurious quality and the design makes me feel that with an oversized envelope clutch and some substantial heels I could really pull it off."
Spiros’s Note: How I’d Style it . . . “one-two punch”
"During L.A. Fashion Week, I saw the combo of the Jumper with Alicia's Original Tomboy jacket on the runway. It was breathtaking. I would get the combo and wear it with brown boots. Walk like an Egyptian."
The best way to describe The Hoodie is simply badass. This piece takes hoodies to a whole new level. Its heat reactive exterior changes colors depending on light, or body heat. It has an ultra soft interior and oversized hood with a tech friendly street wear vibe that will make you feel like a superhero. The Nerd Cape is finally here.
Spiros’s Note: How I’d Style it . . . “supernerd”
"When I arrived for the photoshoot of the pieces, I felt like every other quantum physicist at a fashion studio: a total nerd. Once I had the Hoodie on, things changed. The hood itself is something out of Assassin's Creed. Wear it with a superhero tee underneath and low-rise, boot-cut jeans. I like my Sambas too much, so I would stick with them as far as shoes go, but I agree with Crystal that heels would work great with this bad boy."
Crystal’s Note: How I’d Style it . . . “the new leather jacket”
"I want a whole wardrobe done in the heat reactive material used in this piece. This Hoodie would be amazing as a leather jacket substitute. I’d wear it with ripped denim skinny jeans and a basic tank top or t-shirt, change my shoes from flats to heels for a quick day to night transition and let The Hoodie speak for itself (y’know, in the heat of the moment...)"
Alicia’s Note: How I’d Style it . . . “black tie affair”
"This is a piece that takes traditionally couch potato comfort to a Men In Black level of tech savvy style. Do like me and pair it with sleek black sunglasses, leather tie, button down shirt (no stripes) with rolled sleeves & depending on what's in your closet, sneakers or boots; oh, and sleek, fitted pants of course. *suspenders optional*"
The Uncertain T Box
Austrian Physicist (and dog lover) Erwin Schrödinger's thought experiment involving a cat sealed in a box is the inspiration for the Uncertain T Box, a combination of art, science and fashion. Alicia hand dyes the Uncertain Ts (a truly uncertain and highly combustible process) so that every box contains a one-of-a-kind designer T with a look inspired by interstellar matter. When you open the box you will encounter a work of art on the inside, detachable panels, created by artists who have been asked to share their vision of science with you and your wall.
“Growing up, I never wanted to be any one thing in particular; I wanted to do everything. X2 is, in a way, my expression of that desire: To explore, experiment, create.” - Alicia
Note: You will be able to get an Uncertain T (just the t-shirt) now, even if we don't reach our first stretch goal of $50K. We do think that the Uncertain T Box (a beautifully designed box with expertly sourced art work) will blow you away, but we are willing to take it one step at a time.
The Particle at the End of the Universe
We love reaching out to the public and sharing our passion for art, science and technology. To prove how serious we are, we have teamed up with renowned cosmologist Sean Carroll to bring you signed copies of his awesome new book about the biggest scientific breakthrough since Ramen noodles: the discovery of the Higgs particle! (Go ahead, call it The God Particle and he may leave a special note in the book just for you.)
Project X Squared Graphic T
Two words: Soft awesomeness. Either you wear it and get high fives from strangers, or give it away as a gift and get a hug from your friend. You choose.
The Periodic Table
In case you don't think we are nerdy enough, we are offering a letterpress periodic table with every reward that you choose. Use it to refresh your mad chemistry skills, or as a handy password generator (think rows, columns, visual grids). We think you will like this one!
Every piece in the collection is ready to wear and designed to fit everyday people. The available sizes for each piece in the collection will be XS - XL. While the collection is Unisex, the fit and style of the Labcoat is more typical of womenswear. The fit and style of the Hoodie is more typical of menswear and the Jumper works equally well for both sexes.
When the Kickstarter campaign closes, we will survey the participants for size requirements. If the piece we send to you does not fit, we will be happy to exchange it within a few weeks at no additional shipping charges as long as it's clean and hasn't been worn much outside of fitting.
The plan for production:
1) Source all materials and pre-order fabric prior to last day of funding.
2) Finalize fabric order post funding and order trim. Est. time: 3 weeks.
3) Complete production of collection pieces and designer T's. Est. time: 4 weeks.
4) Tag and ship. Est. time: 3 weeks.
A fully funded campaign will allow us to go into production and deliver the first three (3) pieces of the collection (Labcoat, Jumper, and Hoodie). There are many things that we'd love to do with the X2 line. Here are a few of our stretch goals with others to be revealed in future updates of this campaign.
Fully Funded 25K - The Labcoat, Hoodie, and Jumper go into production.
50K - The Uncertain T Box (t-shirt, box and art) goes into production.
75K – The Elemental Collection - If this funding level is achieved, we will survey the Kickstarter participants to see what they would like us to incorporate into the line going forward. The inspiration will be drawn from the elements of the periodic table. Think Neon Labcoat, Oxygen Jumper and Copper Hoodie!
Thank You (really!)

Risks and challenges
Original Tomboy has successfully taken the first collection pieces through the entire production process with our approved vendors. For Project X Squared we will continue to use the same vendors, who already understand our high quality standards and on-time delivery expectations.
Our primary risk is meeting the timeline for shipping orders, if we significantly exceed our funding expectations. If that occurs, we will pull out all the stops to make sure our backers receive their order on time. We will bring in the necessary resources to expedite the production and shipping processes and will keep you informed of our progress if unexpected delays are encountered. Nevertheless, if it comes between the quality of our products and on-time delivery, we will choose quality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
