So I had to do a hard reset and lost all my data :( I'm not too upset about it because I'm just starting my 1/2 training now so the base runs I did I could lose but if I have to do it again and lose everything it might sting a bit.
@Eric--- Hadn't thought about that! As well as the rest of the Southern hemisphere too. I guess I'm really used to this cold and dark season we call Winter up here. Seems it lasts WAY too long. Sorry!
Hi Craig - Thank you for sharing your experience! We will make sure to pass it along to our product team, as we are constantly trying to improve and evolve.
Rbbit - Can you please DM us the ticket number so we can check the status and follow up? We apologize for not resolving this sooner and we definitely want to address this issue as soon as possible.
Jose - Great to hear that the update was successful. Can you please send an email to support@life-beam regarding the pairing issue.
Hi guys, quick update. Seems like the issue with Android 7 is solved, I uninstalled the app from my phone today and re-installed it and the headset version now shows the correct one. I have noticed that the buttons respond quicker now, but I am experiencing more difficulties with the headset pairing with my phone automatically.
More than a month ago I reported a problem with the lack of BPM reading in the Android app. To this day, the problem has not been resolved. Support stopped responding to my emails, and no one even asked for logs from my phone, to see what might be the cause of such behavior.
Today I was able to upgrade the handset to version 2.0, but the problem did not disappear :(
Dear life beam
I agree with Tom that that the usual way that fat burning zone is calculated is poor at best. I have my zones scientifically tested 4 times a year. At some point will I be able to enter my customized zone heart rates? On the issue of zone and speeds may I put this out there as someone who 5 years ago was 340 lbs and getting winded getting up from the couch to get a drink. in 18 months later I ran a 1/2 marathon on Saturday and a full marathon on Sunday. and was 260 lbs. My science team always told me to go longer not harder. The problem with harder is that when we burn cards the body is designed to replace those carbohydrate stores. "working up an appetite" is an appropriate expression and after a hard workout we often eat more than we worked out. during my journey I ran several marathon races and I always gained weight over those weekends from the prerace pasta dinner to the celebratory buffet post race on more than 3 occasion I ran a marathon and gained weight. training for the races I would loose lots of fat but I always kept it relatively slow. When you go slow you burn the fat and don't want to replace it at your next meal. My 2 cents worth based on my experience of the science I have read and experienced.
@Jessica... The Creators mentionned 2-3 months. I think they want us to go run outdoors this Summer. Should be available for the Winter treadmill season!
@Chris @Andrés. Same issue for me, I had to end up running the update on my wife's mobile phone, I even tried updating on my tablet but it seems that either the app has an issue with Sony or Android 7 as both my mobile and tablet are Sony and run the mentioned version of the OS. Waiting on support to reply to my ticket regarding the issue.
I think they mention in the update. For iOS app, I can track the download and there are very specific instructions to off the earphone and wait for 5min before restarting.
Hi Tom- apologies for not being more specific. Your basic assumption about that zone is generally correct (i.e. more fat is burned than glucose but the more intense the workout, the more calories are burned, and even when the ratio is lower, more energy is taken from fat), moreover, Vi will also take into consideration your personalized calibrated biometric thresholds (heart rate, cadence, pace consistency) and BMI to make sure you are indeed in the right zone. Keep it up!!!
p.s
There's one last component you are probably aware of which is a term called after-burn zone where you are burning fat significantly also after the run itself, all directed by the amount and endurance of effort taken during your last run. Based on our studies we still don't feel fully comfortable to add this metric to our off training screens due to its scientific tolerance, but we promise to keep you guys in the loop once we do so.
Hi Eric- The update will take roughly 2-4 hours to complete and you should be all set! Additionally, this is simply a firmware update, the AI knowledge will come with our next software update.
Thanks for the quick response, but I was asking for a bit more detail here, basically what theory stands behind the Vi approach here. I have read quite a bit scientific papers about fat burning, and I am not sure where to position Vi :-)
Its taking unbelievably long for the update to transfer. Its been whirling for well over an hour. There really must be some serious AI in this update. I'm looking forward to discussing dostoevsky with vi.
Glad to hear everything is all set! Your fat burning zone is calculated based off of your heart rate, and Vi will calculate your HR and pace so she understands your personal “Fat Burning Zone”.
First of all, thanks for the updates, I see several improvements, most importantly I have now experienced the effort guide the very first time after having run more than 60 kilometers :-)
One of my goals is weight loss (actually, reducing the amount of fat would be more precise), and Vi has told me when I entered the "fat burning" zone during my run. Now, I was wondering what fat burning zone Vi is referring to, given that this zone is often misunderstood. For the "typical" fat burning zone that is displayed on cardio machines in gyms, my heart rate was way too high for my age (160 bpm/45 years), so how does Vi calculate it's "fat burning zone"? Any scientific evidence to back this up? From what I understand, that zone just means that more fat is burned than glucose but the more intense the workout, the more calories are burned, and even when the ratio is lower, more energy is taken from fat. How does Vi calculate this?
Don't know how you did it but the music quality got a lot better.
Oh and I had a defected ear bud or something that kept falling off so your service guys sent me a brand new ear bud set. Everything is working great between the new ear bud and the OTA. I'm so glad I backed this project.
Looking forward to the interval training. That was my initial request when I first pledged. I'm very pleased with the continued support!
Hi Emily- Thank you so much for your feedback! We're so happy to hear you are having such a great time with Vi! A few comments on the features you mentioned:
-That must have been interesting running with crickets. ;) We know Vi likes to push out your local music or Spotify instead of a 3rd party source. But that's great that you figured it out and in the next app updates we hope to solve this problem!
- There will be a walking mode coming out very soon. And yes, we are working on intervals! If you do want to run/walk with Vi now just turn off the auto-pause (which you have). However, she will tell you that your pace is inconsistent. We also plan to have these pace inconsistency issues worked out in the next updates!
- If you want us to look into the issue you had with Vi pausing and un-pausing during that cloudy day, you can email us at support@life-beam.com so we can look into your logs.
- The ASR button (on the right ear bud) is a known issue that is a huge focus for our next OTA update. This is scheduled for late June. The voice recognition should be improved now (even during windy times) with this OTA and app updates but and will also be enhanced in the 2nd one too.
- The tones you are hearing are for progress beacons! These come up every time you reach certain distances in your runs.
Thanks again for your feedback! We look forward to hearing more about your experiences in the future!
I saw John's post below about intervals, I would love that option as well!!! That would be so helpful for getting my endurance up because I do better at intervals!
I finally have been able to use vi!
The earbuds sit in my ear perfectly without moving or falling out as I had expected. I did play with different sizes before finding the perfect fit.
It took me a while to figure out how to stop the vi from playing a recording I had of crickets over and over again...there is not stop button (that I can see) to stop vi from playing what is saved on the phone...I fixed this by finding the cricket file and deleting the crickets. I am able to play my "play music" app in the background with no problem!
Vi is pretty cool but I realized she doesn't know when I'm walking or running. I guess I'm so out of shape my heart rate is always high at this point...I realize that I have to wait to start the session until I'm ready to go and not to start it early while I'm still walking on my way to the trail. Either that or I can increase the warm up option time.
A few things that happened for me, it was a cloudy day today and vi kept pausing and unpausing. Yesterday it was not cloudy and she never paused or unpaused once. She did tell me I could adjust the settings, so I did and turned off the autopause function.
I noticed when I tap my right earbud when I want to ask her my heartrate, she doesn't notice my tap. I have to tap harder to get her to respond. My fear of the earbud falling out didn't occur with the harder tapping though so that was good. She did have trouble hearing me with the wind but that was to be expected.
Also, I don't understand what the little beeps are at certain points after she tells me good job. There are some light beeps that keep going and I don't know what they signify.
Overall I loved having her in my ear. Yesterday my faveorite was when she told me to run with the beat and she put on a beat for me to match my steps to.
I also enjoyed today when she told me I did a great job and then asked if I wanted to celebrate with fries and then she said she was kidding. It's nice to have the humor built into vi as well.
So far I'm loving it!
Hi Andreson- that's great news! And bad news... can you please email us at support@life-beam.com? Thank you!
Hi Urska- make sure you logged in with the correct account to bring up your previous runs. If you did that and it's still not working, please also email us at the support email.
Hi John- that's great! Yes, we are working on training plans at the moment! And intervals will definitely be part of the plans. The first release of training plans is planned for a few months from now. Hoping for sometime this summer!
Hi Creators... Great update so far for me.
May I respectfully ask... If you're working on training programs... Could you put intervals maybe as a top priority? I really need to do them but Vi tends to "judge " me when I do.
I also suspect a type of "couch to 5k" training would be important to poeple getting started.
Thanks!
@Andres, same for me. Left it running over night. This morning it was 100%. Came out of the app and back in and it's back to 01.01.01.02. Hasn't tried to update again since then. My app version is 0.9.26.6 (103) prod.
For some reason, I also can't get the update. Yesterday the Earphones Version was updating and the progress went nicely up to 100%. I assume this was the transfer of update from phone to headset?
But after that, the Earphone Version is still at 01.01.01.02 and clicking on it doesn't do anything.
Hi Richard - The full integration with the Apple Health Kit that will allow you to fully synchronize between the apps is a feature that we are keen on releasing. At the moment Vi is able to pull the data from the Apple Health Kit. We will inform you and the rest of our backers via Kickstarter updates as soon as we have a release date.
Hi Jose - We will contact you privately to assist you with the update process. Talk to you soon!
Hi guys! My version of the app does not match with the one you published for the update. Current version for me reads 0.9.26.6 (103)prod. Is the OTA now released worldwide?. My earphones version number has not disappeared so I guess the update is not reaching me. I am located in Spain at the moment.
Thanks guys, that makes sense. I guess for a majority, the OTA updates will possibly take a few running/cycling sessions dependant on how long each session is and if they don't do the update whilst not training. Good to know it won't have a detrimental effect by stop starting. I have another question, when will Vi start being able to "write" data to the Apple HealthKit?
Also, keep up the good work. It's good to see that, even though the product has been released, there is a clear desire to keep the interactions with the backers with the updates and responses to questions. This is what Kickstarter is all about and should be about.
how so you update the firmware..does it do it automatically or i manually have to do it..? im just like turning it off and turning it back on going on the app and seeing the setting its still the same numbers
Hi Tzfardaya- We actually did consider USB updates as one of our options but following multiple focus groups and usability testing, we discovered that the fully seamless update (even if it takes more time) was the more robust and scalable mechanism to continue develop. However, you know we still like to listen to you guys and promise to re-discuss this issue internally as a possibility for future updates. Thanks!
