We are at a momentous crossroads – as a society and as a species. We have the opportunity to expand our perspective on what it means to be human, and to choose to connect deeply with the living planet that is our home. The gateway to this new culture is through stewardship, healing, compassion and restoration. We really can cultivate the future and the culture that we want – it is ours to choose; if we will. Come join us on an adventure – a quest of a lifetime – as we create our future and our culture together! And as we discover that the world we really want is right at our fingertips!
This groundbreaking book from social entrepreneur, father and pragmatic philosopher, Aaron William Perry, is filled with wisdom bombs, life-hacking techniques and culture-cracking insights to create the world and the future we really want. We are at a crossroads. At this unique point in human history, we have so much available to us in the way of energy, information and technology. Yet we often feel overwhelmed, disconnected and uncertain about our own futures and the future of the planet – in terms of social change, climate change, economic change, our work, our families, our health, our well-being and planetary sustainability. This book is an answer. A hopeful answer that shows how so much of what we really want in our lives, our relationships and our society is really right at our fingertips. Come join us on an adventure – a quest of a lifetime – as we create our future and our culture together!
WHAT DOES THE BOOK COVER?
Y on Earth explores a vast range of interconnected topics in an adventure organized in four sections.
Part One, “We Are What We Eat & We Are Soil,” follows an arc tracing our relationship with food and soil from Place through Grow, Water, Harvest, Cook, Eat, and Waste, culminating in Steward. This begins our quest to get smarter and feel better as we learn to heal ourselves and our living planet.
Part Two, “Cultivating the Life We Really Want,” explores the interconnected dimensions and disciplines of a life abundant with meaning, purpose, connection and well-being. Here our adventure continues with the chapters Balance, Unplug, Walk, Wonder, Connect, Delight, Listen, Think and Speak.
Part Three, “Activity, Agency, Empowerment & Vocation,” takes the reader on a quest to see through the veil of our hectic, consumerist culture and to embrace our power to make intelligent choices for ourselves and our future. We begin with Demand, and continue with Work, Earn, Give, Power, and Make, culminating in Move.
Part Four, “Creating the Culture & Future We Really Want,” is the summit of our journey together. Weaving from Envision through Create, Change, Flow, Cultivate, Love, and Pray, the book reaches its crescendo in Heal (something we all need) and conclusion in Culture – something we’re all creating together, right now, you and I!
Y on Earth is a quest exploring our connection with Earth, soil, food and each other, in order to cultivate a culture of love, care and a spirituality of grounded optimism, stewardship, humor and humility.
WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR?
Basically everybody who eats and breathes. More specifically, millennials, their parents, grandparents and educators, and any and all among the fast-growing global demographic of aspirationals who care about cultivating health, well-being, sustainability and grounded spirituality.
HOW FAR ALONG IS THE BOOK? A full manuscript is complete and is in the final editing process with the talented editing team, led by Moyra Jean Stiles, and the design team including, Jake Welsh, Maggie McLaughlin and Tony Greco. We anticipate that both the eBook and the first edition paperback will be available in November of this year.
THE PUBLISHING PROCESS: After months of research into several publishers and publishing options, we are excited to go the self-publishing route! This is in large part because this project is all about building community, and we believe that our ability to manage and guide the communication, marketing and distribution of the project is an important part of this community-building process.
KICKSTARTER GOALS: I am raising $20,000 to fund the editing, publishing, printing, marketing and distribution of the book.

I love life. I love food. I love soil. I love water. I have worked for 20 years as a consultant to nonprofit and for profit organizations making positive impacts in the world, and have a diverse background in both the private sector and academic arenas. I founded and ran a renewable energy company and a natural food distribution company, seeing both of these as steps to a more sustainable future. At university and in graduate school, I dove into philosophy, economic development, history, sustainable design, ecopsychology, literature and environmental policy. But to really explain my forty years on our beautiful planet Earth, I need to go back to my early childhood in the Pacific Northwest. As a young kid, in the lush forests of the Puget Sound region, my dog and I would play for hours among the towering, moss-covered cedars, maples and spruce trees, only to emerge from the deep woods to graze on sweet peas, carrots and strawberries in my parents’ expansive garden. You see, I experienced a slice of Edenesque “heaven on earth” that I have come to understand and believe to be much more common to our ancestors’ experiences than to our modern, urban experiences. As we careen into the middle 21st century, it has become increasingly clear to me that our individual and collective relationship with the natural, living world is absolutely critical – paramount – to cultivating lives of fulfillment and meaning, and a sustainable future marked by joy, abundance, health and well-being.
THE BIRTH OF A BOOK:
I first started writing Y on Earth while on vacation from my hectic companies with my kids in Puerto Vallarta. As teenagers, they slept a few hours later than I did each morning, and, armed with strong coffee and the sound of waves lapping at the shore, I sat down and wrote. And wrote and wrote and wrote. The words kept on flowing in a way I hadn’t really experienced before as a writer (certainly not in grad school!). My work in the natural food and the renewable energy industries had led me to a very stark conclusion: innovative companies and market forces alone would not likely deliver the profound shift in consciousness and evolution of awareness needed at this critical point in human history. We need to connect our hearts and minds with knowledge and wisdom. This is my hope for the book, inspired by my children and their future. And this is my prayer for all of us, and all of our children and grandchildren.

Risks and challenges
Although I thoroughly enjoy and actually even find a certain delight in the writing and editing process, it takes a lot of time! Thus, with this project, there are risks of delays on the availability and delivery of the eBook as well as the printed book. That said, the editing, layout and design team and I are nearly done with the process, we would only anticipate potential delays to be in terms of days or weeks, not months. It is true: it takes a village to write and publish a book!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
