I am trying to publish my first book of photographs. The money raised by this campaign will go directly towards the costs of printing and shipping 400 copies of the book.
The book is called America: Witnessed, and it is my attempt at making sense of American culture in the first part of the 21st century.
Having been raised in Western Kentucky and living my entire adult life in New York City, I am familiar with the greatly different perspectives that make up this process that we call American democracy, a process that can seem so incompatible at times. This project began as an attempt to introduce these two very different worlds to one another. By the beginning of 2012, I’d been photographing for more than 10 years when I decided I needed to expand the project. So, last spring, I travelled for 6 weeks, without my wife or a paycheck. I drove over 10,000 miles, across 26 states, and burned over 300 gallons of gasoline. I spent almost every evening in bars and diners, meeting the people in these places and trying to find out what life was like there. I was looking for answers, but mostly I only discovered more questions. This book is my interpretation of all those miles travelled, all of those places seen, and all of those people that I met.
The creative work for this project is finished. After returning from my trip in April, I spent the rest of the year, and up until now, editing and sequencing all of these photographs from the last 11 years. I've worked with an incredible designer named Francesca Richer, and the book is ready to go to press.
This project has been completely self-funded up until now, and I need your help to make this book a reality.
The book will be printed in a limited edition of 400. It will contain 48 photographs, and an essay by the one and only Duane Michals.

Risks and challenges
Up until now, the project has been completely self-funded. I’ve decided to self-publish this book, so that I can have total artistic freedom to make the book that I envision. I need your help to make the printing of the book a reality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
