The Broken Continent: Round Two!
Thanks to our generous backers we finished an amazingly successful Kickstarter in July/August 2012,
and were able to complete principal photography for our fantasy web
series pilot in mid-September.
We are now holding a second Kickstarter for its post-production and to promote the series as much as possible in the coming year. All backers at $5 and above of this campaign and our previous one will receive an invite to our exclusive screening of the pilot - to be held in the Washington, DC area in February 2013. We are pursuing online screening possibilities for backers unable to attend.
Conventions and Festivals
In order to get The Broken Continent out to a wider audience, part of the funds we raise will be used to showcase the series at apropos conventions and festivals.
Conventions, like ComiCon and DragonCon, will put the series directly in front of fans of the genre. There is no better way to connect directly with an audience and to build a fanbase. The Kickstarter campaign will help us pay the vendor fees and other costs associated with attending conventions.
Festivals, such as the New York Independent Television Festival, will give The Broken Continent a chance to be seen by industry professionals, which could potentially (and hopefully) lead to a production deal. Securing backing for future production is the primary goal of our pilot. Part of our Kickstarter funds will go to paying these festival submission fees.
Every fantasy project can be enhanced by good visual effects. The Broken Continent features a number of visual effects shots that will help to bring the audience into the world of Elyrion, like city backdrops and magical manifestations (or more realistic visual effects... watch the video above!). These effects take hours of work to create, and this work represents the livelihood of our visual effects artists. Our fundraising campaign will ensure that our visual effects artists are fairly compensated.
Accomplished composer, Noah Potter, will be scoring The Broken Continent pilot. Listen to his Broken Continent theme above! His recent films include the Lucy Liu drama Nomads, and the horror/thriller 5 Souls, both premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. Additional films have starred Martin Sheen, Adrian Paul and the late David Carradine, among others. His music has been featured on NBC, MTV and VH1.
Thousands of years ago, the great continent of Elyrion was broken into
five pieces by a vengeful god, which became known as the
Five Shards: the Heart, the Blade, the Eye, the Crown, and the Fist.
Eadwyn Redway, king of the Heart and the Blade, seeks to re-unify the Five Shards under his rule. However, not all of his subjects share his ambition and rise up to oppose him. A bloody war ensues, wreaking havoc throughout the Heart.
Refugees head to the Ironleaf Forest, where legend holds that the Daughters of Tairol will offer protection to the widows and orphans of war. The Daughters decide to take action to stop Eadwyn, and kidnap Queen Malkyn and Prince Boric. The plan succeeds, but Eadwyn responds by dispatching a ruthless order of assassins, the Ebon Spider, to retrieve the queen and prince.
The Creative Team
The Broken Continent is produced by award-winning indie filmmakers Francis Abbey of Ciscovaras Pictures, Kelley Slagle of Cavegirl Productions, and Bjorn Munson of Team Jabberwocky. In addition to a talented crew, we assembled a large union and non-union cast with over 20 speaking roles and 36 extras for the pilot.
How else can I help?
Thanks for joining us on our journey to The Broken Continent!
Risks and challenges
Every motion picture project carries with it a great assortment of risks. With so many variables like people, equipment, locations, weather - to name just a few - the only certainty in filmmaking is that things will go wrong. Solving problems, then, is an essential part of the process.
The producers of The Broken Continent have over 30 years of collective experience in filmmaking and have encountered, and overcome, many difficulties. Our biggest miscalculation with the initial project was underestimating the costs involved. New expenses emerged throughout the process, exhausting the funds from our original Kickstarter campaign. We feel, however, that all of the unforeseen expenditures were made in the best interests of the production and the high quality of the principal photography justifies those expenditures. Now that principal photography is complete, our largest risks are already behind us.
Our biggest challenge now is getting the pilot seen and securing backing for future production. This can be overcome by clever and persistent promotion, generating buzz via social media, building a fan base, and getting the pilot seen by the right people. We have already enjoyed some early press and social recognition with the success of our initial Kickstarter and have fed the momentum by sharing clips, stills and behind the scenes interviews. This second campaign will help us move The Broken Continent onward and upward :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
