Like an "Artstream", but a bit more mid-century, and a lot more kickass!

We are three artists based in the beautiful Methow Valley of North Central Washington. We span three generations, and we work in three separate mediums. We have different ideas on art, but we agree that art is important to the revitalization of this once-thriving logging community.

Over the last 20-odd years, the intense landscapes of the North Cascades and peaceful lifestyle of the Methow Valley have attracted artists from all walks of life, and the Methow Valley has become a hub for art and artisans. Despite this glut of skilled artists, show space for experimental/edgy art is limited and there are few ways for local artists to take their work on the road. We feel this is a crucial niche for engaging people in art and for encouraging artists to create works outside of a traditional gallery setting. We want to fill this gap through the creation of the Spartan Art Project.

We are restoring this 1951 Spartan Imperial Mansion to display unique and experimental work from local, regional, and national artists. We view this 36’ classic camper as both an inspiring and challenging space for art installations. We want the Spartan to be a platform for experimental art, and a space for artists to take chances. From the viewer’s perspective, we want to engender excitement about art and engage them on a new level.

The Spartan line of trailers followed in the tradition of the Spartan Aircraft--durable but sleek. We intend to honor this tradition with our remodel.

Location

TwispWorks
TwispWorks

Our homebase will be on the TwispWorks campus. TwispWorks is a former US Forest Service Ranger Station commissioned during the Great Depression and built by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC); the entire site comprises 17-buildings over 6.5-acres, and it is located in downtown Twisp, WA. TwispWorks is now a community-driven project, and its board of directors has systematically restored and revitalized this historic space, morphing the buildings and landscape into spaces for artist studios, nonprofit organizations, and businesses.

We think TwispWorks is the perfect setting for The Spartan Art Project. The presence of the Spartan—when it is not on the road—will draw new interest and excitement to the Town of Twisp and to TwispWorks. Tens of thousands of visitors come to Twisp and the Methow Valley each year, and we want to provide them with an artful experience.

Funding

We will be using our Kickstarter funding to complete the transformation of the Spartan Imperial Mansion. So far, we have gutted the interior, stripped the paint, replaced the sub-flooring, and purchased an actual floor that we are very excited about—reclaimed kiln slats that were once used for drying lumber (awesome, right?). We have invested a good deal of our own funding thus far, and we have received amazing help from the community. We would like to ask for your assistance to take us all the way there.

In order to bring the Spartan up to form, we need to wire the interior, replace the windows, patch aluminum, install walls, put in a solar lighting system, and make a few upgrades that will make the Spartan officially road worthy. We are working hard to use reclaimed, local products and accepting the donated time of the Methow Valley’s very skilled and generous community to finish the Spartan Art Project by Spring 2013.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

One of the main setbacks that we face in completing this project stems from the inclement weather in our region. With winter temperatures averaging below zero, progress could be slow. However, we have each lived here for quite a while and are accustomed to working outside in the cold. If, however, temperatures reach very far below zero, we may have to find indoor space to move the Spartan or postpone completion of the renovation until the spring.

Additionally, we will have to go through the process of incorporating ourselves as a partnership and apply for a business license. This step will take both time and know-how. Our partnership with TwispWorks will be a great boon in this area. The TwispWorks campus works with more than a dozen businesses that reside there, and the TwispWorks staff has the experience and expertise to help us move create a formalized business partnership. We believe that, with TwispWorks’ support, this risk will be minimalized.
