Giant Pod on Lenox Avenue is a planned temporary installation by artist team Montserrat Daubon and Pedro Villalta on the median of Lenox Ave. aka Malcolm X Blvd. just north of 124th St. in Harlem, NYC. We are artists living and working in the neighborhood who want to see more public art happening in our community.
We made a proposal to a local neighborhood association (the Mount Morris Park Community Improvement Association) who helped us approach the city for a permit. Our project was approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT) under whose jurisdiction the median lies. Pod will be installed in early June of this year for a duration of 11 months. Once installed we will have an opening ceremony and invite everyone in the community. Time and date TBA...
Pod will be a hollow steel sculpture measuring 10' tall by 3' at its widest point mounted on a tiered series of steel plates. It is rough in texture and highlighted with dripped bronze. It is a simple and elegant organic shape that is going to look sensational at this scale and in this material. We chose this sight because of its proximity to a major thoroughfare and its narrowness will frame the work beautifully.
The DOT gave us $1,000 toward this project. We need funding for the balance of this project. Your support will help to defray the following costs:
Engineer's Report $1,500
Insurance $ 800
We chose to do a Kickstarter campaign because we liked that people get something for their involvement. Check out our rewards! Thank you so much for your time and your support!
