Eying bare technology has been a favourite geek passtime since the Industrial Revolution. Yet too often, hard core technology fans have been condemned to roam the internet, ploughing their way through an array of dubious sites to secretly stare at low quality pictures. Playgeek Magazine wants to change all that. We offer a magazine crammed with classy photographs of stripped machinery, cavorting in a beatiful setting. Imagine an open MRI scanner on a tropical beach, or a vintage calculator – sprawled out on a rug by the open fire - flashing you an extra bit.
Playgeek Magazine aims to be a subtle and stylish magazine. One you can leave on the coffee table without blushing. Think of us as something you could give away as a present, or enjoy together with your fellow geeks.
Our very first shoot involved a washing machine – a cheeky little next-door number. Well, it was a blast. She showed us everything: circuits, condensators, pipes, pumps, mechanics and that mesmerizing behind of an electric motor she had. That first moment got us dreaming of more models – the kind of heavily exotic machinery you could really sink yourself into. A jet fighter would be great. Or the tokamak in a nuclear fusion reactor. It got us dreaming of the kind of machine fit for a spread in New Scientist.
If you'd still rather read it for the articles, though, then that's fine of course. We know it's not just looks that count. True passion for our models springs from understanding the finer tunings as well. Each of our photo shoots is accompanied by deep probing articles, written by our most dedicated technophiles. Geek poetry that knows how to praise the unparalleled beauty of a naked machine, while telling you all about its bits and parts and how they function. For your instruction and entertainment.
(noobdisclaimer: no organic nudity will be shown in this magazine)
Risks and challenges
We've been nurtuting this idea for a long time. So much so that, with some nerd-friends of mine, we tried a first sexy-machine photo shoot on my show, De Schuur van Scheire (Scheire's Barn), a comedy-science programme on Belgian national TV. We got a lot of good reactions after that particular episode. Enough for us to start considering the possibility of more nerds like us who want to see Play Magazine actually happen.
In order for this idea to work, we needed to think things through in lines of production, preprint-print, and handling. We needed to break our heads over the budget. Nevertheless, we think we have a good idea of the effective cost and effort going into a project like Geek Magazine. We do believe we will be able to deliver a fun and classy product!
In case, however, of any delays due to printing or distribution, we'll be sure to communicate on time and keep you updated. You have our word that we will do our utmost to deliver your copy of Playgeek Magazine ASAP.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
