WHAT IS BLACK MUMBA?
Black Mumba is a 100 page, Black & White graphic novel written by Ram V and featuring art by Devmalya Pramanik, Kishore Mohan, Rosh and Aditya Bidikar.
The graphic novel is a collection of 'Noir' short stories, set in the city of Mumbai and told through the eyes of a weary police inspector. But there are no real criminals in Black Mumba. The city itself is the quarry and the bleak, weird and yet magical nature of life on its streets is at the heart of the stories.
Black Mumba began as a single short story titled 'Dead Rain' written for the Blood Root anthology published by Sawdust Press in 2012. What began as a 14 page story then grew into a larger concept and more stories. Excited by the idea of a project set in Mumbai, some of the brightest comic book artists in India came together to create this 100 page book.
We're now reaching out to the comics community across the world to help us print this book. Because we believe that good stories are universal. They may be set in an uncommon place. They may have characters you haven't met before. Or you might see familiar things in a different light. But underneath it all, good stories are about the fundamentally human experiences that we all understand, no matter where we come from.
Ram V is an author from Mumbai, India who debuted in 2012 with the ongoing series Aghori. He's written short fiction and comics for online publications and anthologies since then. He has an upcoming project titled Brigands slated for a US / UK release later this year. He now lives in London, dabbles in illustration and harbours unlikely ambitions of being a blues guitarist. HOW DID WE MAKE THIS HAPPEN?
We've all been working with each other on and off in the Indian comic book industry. Some of us have worked for publishers in the US. Over the years we've hung-out and gotten to know each other. Sometime last year we decided we should do a book together.
With Black Mumba we really wanted to tell stories from India. But make them modern and contemporary. Not the yesteryear fantasies India's famous for - nor spandex re-workings of popular superheroes. So we ended up with these beautiful and unusual stories. But that also meant that the title was a hard sell to publishers. Can you imagine the pitch? Stories from Mumbai - yes Mumbai. And they read like crime noir - but really, they're not.
We got a lot of 'This is beautiful but not the kind of thing we publish.'
But we're betting you the reader will enjoy the stories. Because we haven't had anyone read the stories and say they didn't enjoy them. So we're bringing these stories straight to you. We made them - now we're asking you to help us publish them.
SO WHERE ARE WE WITH THE BOOK NOW?
We're really happy to say that the entire book is finished. Art, writing, lettering, cover-art and design - all done. All that remains is to print the books, pack them with your rewards and ship them across the world to you, our backers. The money raised through the campaign will be used toward a print run and to enable distribution of the books.
The comics community is an incredibly supportive and welcoming group of people. You'll be the reason this book exists!
