I can't help but echo what others have said - the choice of video showed less than great judgement on your part. I'm neutral on the name change.

As a biologist I can't help but point out that shrews are not rodents (class Rodentia). They are part of the class Eulipotyphila, which used to be known as Insectivora. Moles, shrews, and the other weird animals in that group are not rodents.

I thought i was disappointed with the update link, but honestly i'm even more disappointed by the lack of maturity of people posting in the comments. Calling backers, "pathetic, buttercup, etc." Keep your comments on task with regards to the project details and stop attacking other backers who are voicing legitimate concerns over a controversial update.
@Jason: You guys have an awesome project, and will recover from this oops of a post. Keep up the good work, and post more videos of cats playing with the SHRU! That's what backers want to see anyway!

My husband just informed me that shrews are not weak defenseless lil animals. He told me a story about an owner of a snake that thought he could feed his snake a shrew when he came back to the tank next morning the shrew was in the tank alone...!

Hi i am a girl and i love the name Shru it is so cute plus I know cats like to play with their prey and tho it seems cruel have you ever watched funniest home video? it is crazy what parents will do to their kids to get on tv also have you ever seen a Heron eat a baby turtle or any animal? They use their long beak like a javelin and hammer it to death, cruelly and mercilessly...anyway @Jason, like I said earlier the only way to redeem yourself from this bad choice of video is to put up your own new and improved video that shows the Shru updated going faster, going under couches coming back out and making all the cute shrewlike noises too

I'm sorry, but you people in the comments are truly pathetic... He clearly warned you of the video, yet you morons watched it anyways and still complain, even AFTER they apologized... What more to you want from them?

Personally I didn't see anything really wrong with the video, the shrew wasn't even hurt nor killed so I don't see why you're complaining really, the women was trying to get her INDOOR cat to actually act like a true "cat"... So what if she poked it with a TINY stick? You babies act like she was smacking around with a tree branch or something, and yet you think that is cruelty? You bleeding hearts need to realize that this is reality... Cats are predators that like to play with their prey before killing it, watching a shrew get battered around like a toy is nothing to cry over when atrocities 100x worse than that happen every day to humans and animals alike everywhere...

Lastly, complaining about the name change? Seriously? I may disagree with it as well but I don't blame them for the name change, they're trying to start a business so excuse them for making a business decision by choosing a more fancy name for their product... If anything this update has weeded out the unintelligent people of the internet, the 4,500+ of us still here will enjoy our new play toys thank you very much... Sorry for the rude response but I felt like someone needed to defend them as you savages all decided to do a 180 and jump on their backs and stab it over a stupid little video that they said they regret using even though they warned you idiots of "shrew brutality" in the video...

    6. Theresa Pettit on

I am also upset about this update. This was a cute product for people that love animals. Now, not only have you named it after another animal that gets killed and only shrieks like that in terror but you link to a horrible video that is cruel on so many levels. It has made me rethink my pledge and if I even want to be associated with helping this company get started. I'm happy to see that I can unpledge and think that's what I'm going to do. Who is doing your marketing and what is wrong with them?? How could you post this on a product that is clearly directed to animal lovers. It makes it seem like all you care about is the money and not about the animals at all. I have never seen a company do such a horrible move on so many levels. What kind of though could possibly have gone into this??

Wow never have I seen so many people so upset and unpledge - way to go on the marketing guys.

FWIW I hate the new name, the Egg worked for me, makes perfect sense. However if there are legal reasons why you have to change the name then so be it, but be honest about why you are changing it. Cos we thought this would be cooler isnt really a reason FYI

Also any video of animals undergoing cruelty or violence? Not cool!

    8. Courtney Cole Henderson on

As the "owner" of a semi-feral cat outdoor cat who brings me half-eater moles and shrews (as well as snakes, lizards, frogs and squirrels), I absute detest the name change!!!

I would never have backed the project if this was the original name... Even though I love the idea... My cat would still be perfectly happy with a few felt catnip mice on a string... No need for a fancy electronic gadget with a stupid name.

(Ok, I guess people could say the old name was stupid, too. How about "Buster" as in boredom buster or the "KBF" (or "CBF")- Kitty's Best Friend... Surely you can come up with something better?!?!?

I like the name, and as for the video, he TOLD you there was "shrew brutality" in it. Once I saw that (as a died-in-the-wool lover of ALL animals), I chose NOT to watch. Love it. Only in America could you warn people about the video's contents, they watch it, and they complain anyway..."just to be heard," I guess. Unreal.

    10. Lance Edmonds on

SHRU? Terrible uninspiring name, doesnt give any insight into what its is. How about something more informing and unique like CATOY?

I'm pretty offended by choice of video also, not because of how cats are predators but because of the cruelty by the cat owner. This is a terrible video, I stopped after she was poking it with a stick. How is this cute?

Didn't like the video as well.... One more lesson you got out of this...

That was cruel, not cute. And Egg is more unique. Stop thinking, don't freak out, all is ok as it is.
We know how you feel now. Been there before.
We still like the toy :) Good luck.

    17. Jonathan E. Convoy on

If anyone here is upset by this, you might want to consider the fact that if you are a cat owner (indoor or outdoor); you are harbouring a serial killer (by societal standards) . I for one have a cat and know the supposed dark side of these creature. This is part of the natural behaviour of cats. There was a heads up given on the video, no one twisted your arm to watch it. Grow up and stop freaking out about nonsense. Want something to get upset about for real? Just take a look at any of the human rights atrocities going on in the world right now. Possibly look into some animal cruelty that is actually being perpetrated by PDX Pet Designs...oh wait, there is none. Perhaps that might require more effort than your bleeding heart can exert?

    18. Barry on

Skimmed the video. Not cancelling anything since I've actually considered buying my cat feeder mice to play with. The SHRU will be a great replacement.

    19. Jonathan E. Convoy on

Lol, good choice of name. What I have learned is people are WAAAAY too sensitive. Please go write in your special dream journal or diary some more. Toughen up buttercups, this is real life.

    20. Lisa Guay on

I don't like the new name. Even disregarding the very inappropriate video, shrews are not exactly cute or cuddly critters (e.g. The Taming of the Shrew). I don't think it's a wise marketing decision to link this toy to an animal with a negative connotation. It also seems a bit bizarre and misleading to sell a toy named after a shrew that looks more like an egg than any sort of creature... I vastly prefer the previous name.

    21. Pearl Tryntje Rapalje

We clearly NEED more videos of the toy Shru! I am not so offended by the use of the real shrew video tho I did turn it off pretty soon ha ha it does bother me that there is no GOOD video to share on facebook that shows Shru going fast, under couches and back out, and making weird noises while being chased come on guys you got 100,000 extra or something now make that video!

    22. Dan Panamaroff on

If the SHRU will bloodlessly scratch the hunting itch of my cats, I WILL buy it of course.

Cat ARE little murderers... Their hunting behavior is what is cute...

      You KNOW that?

      *sigh* Humans.

A typo below. Of course I meant that we condemn the mistreatment of animals.

    24. Jason O'Mara 3-time creator on

      Hello folks,

First, let me apologize. PDX Pet Design condones the mistreatment of animals, the linked video was only to show the interaction between the cat and the shrew. We were not at all involved in the creation of the video, it was just the first result found in a quick Google search.

Again, we apologize for any upset this has caused you. We cannot edit the update once it's been posted but if we could we certainly would.

I'm also thinking hard about cancelling my pledge due to the linked video. While I fully accept that my cats will catch and play with (and kill, and eat, and barf up) rodents and small birds, I certainly don't go out of my way to torment the little things with a stick. The cat in the video is obviously uninterested, so the owner pokes and prods the poor critter for 5 minutes til it finally scampers away - "the chase" lasts all of 2 seconds.

Hopefully there's some sort of retraction and/or appology within the next 33 hours so I can continue to support a fellow small business person with what I think is a decent cat toy idea.

      And now this "cute" video.

    33. dirk on

Hey, I am not 100% sure about the name but I like the similarity with SHRDLU (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHRDLU). And it has to have a name better than "egg". As far as the iXXX suggestions go: Not bad but aren't there already enough iThingies?

    34. Fiona Cockwill on

Cats are cats, they are less predator then humans are. If you cannot accept the nature of your cat why have one? I accept that if I tried to remove a mouse from my older cat he would promptly dispatch it loudly thus defeating my efforts so I stopped trying. He is now a house cat due to old age and although he hardly ever "plays" other than the game of "wake up food provider". I hope this toy may give him a little fun. Being a small pet breeder I have had to learn to keep just about every detail to my self to avoid upsetting those with no understanding of nature, it is not worth the grief. To the creator I recommend thinking very hard about all posts, think about how things are worded, so many get offended over nothing. I know it is soul destroying! But don't stop communicating because of it. Maybe stick to technical facts and cats playing with the toy only. I wonder if iShrew or iMouse could be name contenders but they may already be in use.

Really disappointed with the video link attached to this product. I was excited about a humane alternative to my cats chasing little mice, but clearly that isn't what you had in mind. I am giving the project the benefit of the doubt, but any more garbage like that and I will be requesting a full refund and withdraw my support.

      Dietmar on

      Oh Keep calm!
Cats are predatory animals, and every cat owner knows that it is not nice to find some small animals like birds and mice in front of door or in the house (sometimes still alive).

I don't like the video... more cause the cat is lazy and so the owner shouldn't try to scare the shrew... but no reason to overreact here.

BTW: I heard cats don't like to eat shrews because they are pretended to have a bitter taste. Young cats try to eat them only once.

And once again: Let the cat be an animal, not only a ball-of-wool-playing cute tool.

    39. Suw Charman-Anderson on

Not so sure about the name change. Cats don't eat shrews because they find them unpalatable, as they have scent glands which produce a noxious smell (and probably taste). Some shrews are also venomous, and certainly any of my cats that have tried to eat one have regretted it, usually vomiting up the remains relatively quickly.

Renaming your toy after a mammal that's noxious, poisonous, and will make a cat vomit probably isn't the best of branding decisions, to be honest.

      HOW DO I UN-PLEDGE???

After seeing you condone that "cute" video as you put it, I no longer wish to help you on your way.

Please advise me of how to unpledged.

I do not condone animal cruelty in any way shape or form. I was supporting a toy for cats and then get a video from you showing an innocent little shrew being tortured by the human and the cat alike! AND YOU LIKE IT!
      That sickens me.
