About this project
Hello. We are Jess Lavelle and Laura Buck, Old Oak Apothecary's co-proprietors, and we make beeswax candles.
Why we've come to Kickstarter: We are seeking funding from Kickstarter to create enough candles to bring to our local farmers market, and to get our web page up and running with a working inventory. Our goal is to create a line of six fragrances which will be completed by June. Any additional money we earn will be used towards purchasing real candle-making equipment! Right now we're working out of small pots and pans, but as we expand, it would be nice to create larger batches, which are still actually very small by industry standards.
Why we use beeswax: To make one pound of wax, worker bees will eat over 10 pounds of honey, will fly over 150,000 miles (the equivalent of six times around the earth), and will visit 33 million flower blossoms! If that isn't awesome enough, beeswax is the only all-natural wax available. And it's renewable! Soy doesn't cut it, and neither does paraffin. Using beeswax is important to us because we want to craft a product that resonates in harmony with nature and is as sustainable as possible. And one that smells fantastic. Also, our beeswax is procured from local apiaries, and we love supporting beekeepers.
Beeswax candles burn 5 times longer than any other wax available. It is also a natural air-freshener; as it burns, it emits negative ions which clean and purify the air. It is believed that negative ions improve air quality, and help generate feelings of well being. The flame from a beeswax candle is also unique, and burns brighter and cleaner than any other candle flame. No candle is truly smoke-free, but beeswax comes close, and you will never get that black soot on your walls when you burn beeswax candles, the way you would if you burned a paraffin candle. And, since beeswax does not contain harmful chemicals and is a renewable resource, our candles can be burned around those with allergies or who are sensitive to strong chemical scents.
Why we use essential oils: This is a no-brainer for us. Essential oils allow us to craft delicious, all-natural, rich fragrances for our candles. Above all, we want to make simple candles that smell amazing. Of course there is the added benefit of the healing properties of essential oils, as many proponents of aromatherapy believe is the case. Sure there are lots of synthetic fragrances on the market right now that produce great-smelling candles, but they're cheap, and completely artificial. Also, there is evidence to suggest that burning these synthetic fragrances is unhealthy, as is burning paraffin. We will never craft a candle that smells like cotton candy, and that's 100% okay with us.
We have created six blends of essential oils: Clarity (bergamot, basil, lemon, grapefruit); Refresh (bergamot, lemongrass, ginger, peppermint); Mint Patch (spearmint, peppermint); Forest (rosemary, fir needle, cedarwood), Spanish Grove (sweet orange, cinnamon, clove), and Sylvan Garden (palmarosa, lavender, cedarwood). We also make a pure, unscented candle, which releases the sweet, honey-smell of beeswax. We will also be offering a Limited Edition "Kickstarter" candle enhanced with pink grapefruit. These are the fragrances we have developed thus far, but as our little company continues to evolve, so do our fragrances. We are currently tweaking each scent, and reworking combinations until we get them perfect. If you decide that you would like to invest in our company, we will provide you with the finalized fragrances in June.
How we are committed to being an eco-friendly company: We use all-natural ingredients, as you know by now. Also, we are pretty proud of our packaging; it's all either recycled or recyclable. Additionally, we plan to offer our candles at farmers markets, arts and craft fairs, and other local vendors. Your support will help us contribute to business development in our local community.
We hope you've enjoyed reading about our concept of Old Oak Apothecary, and see how simplicity, nature and dedication to the craft is as important to our mission as wholesomeness is to the materials we choose. We would be honored with your support, and welcome you to see how each candle displays splendid craft, skill, and work, in the rustic tradition.
With gratitude, Jess & Laura
*http://www.candlescience.com/faq/28/soy-wax/are-there-any-organic-or-non-gmo-soy-waxes/: We used to love soy. We loved the idea of soy so much, that we spent many hours researching soy wax manufacturers, so that we could procure the highest-quality wax available. What we found was that nearly all the soy wax in the US is made by just four companies, and none of them currently process organic soy oil into candle wax. The soy that is turned into wax is grown by large conglomerates that grow GMO crops, which threaten our environment with their lack of biodiversity, not to mention the copious usage of pesticides and herbicides. Soy wax also undergoes a chemical manipulation process that turns soy oil into wax. Not natural. We also researched palm wax, a nice alternative to soy wax, but according to Scientific American, South-Eastern growers of palm wax are responsible for clear-cutting thousands of acres of rainforest. The fact of the matter is that we wanted to create a product that would allow us to sleep with a clear conscious. Beeswax is the only wax that allows us to do that, and you can feel good knowing that.
