Watch as Michel Jerome Browne plays country blues on the Grand Manan in different keys, switches to swing and ends with some cool county pickin. Michael has an aggressive picking style and may be the only player who's asked us to raise the action.

The Importance of AAA or Better Wood

From the day we announced our first guitar - Tofino, our world-beating Cedar top solid wood acoustic - we've been asked to produce a guitar with a dark sunburst finish. That presented a problem. Because many makers use the dark stain to cover up blemished or lower grade wood Sunbursts have a bad rep. Not every Sunburst finish guitar is flawed (a few higher priced ones can be great) but we didn't want any of our guitars to be seen or heard in that light.

Every guitar we produce is crafted from AAA or better wood. It's who we are. We obsess over wood grade and wood quality because the wood that goes into the guitar makes an astounding difference in the sound that comes out. We don't need to cut corners to offer great prices. But, truth be told we really did want to add a Sunburst guitar to the line. How to do it while maintaining our standards (see above)? Turns out the question was tougher than the answer. We'd guarantee that our Sunburst finished guitars were crafted from the same flawless wood as our natural finished models.

Body Style - Slope shoulder Dreadnought

High Ratio Tuning Machines - and why they matter

18:1 genuine Grover vintage tuning machines

Who cares about tuning machines? We do and so should you if getting it "right" includes having strings that play the exact note they're called upon to play.

Tuning machines (or "tuners" for short) work with gears that rotate the post when the button is turned, tightening or loosening the string. The gear ratio determines how many times the button has to be turned to rotate the post a full 360 degrees. The higher the ratio the more precise the adjustment, and the more accurate the tone of the attached string.

Most makers use a 12 0r 14 to 1 ratio, not because it's the optimum choice but because low ratio tuning machines cost way less than their high ratio cousins. We have no distributors or dealers adding unnecessary markup so we're not faced with that kind of quality downgrade. As we've said in the past about our high ratio tuners: "We pay more so you pay less".

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and when we developed our new bridge using highly polished Bolivian Rosewood we knew we beheld beauty. Too flowery? OK - lets just say that fingering a Bolivian Rosewood fretboard is just about as slippery as fingering Ebony. Glass smooth! And the oiled bridge really highlights the richly figured wood.

Mama Don't Allow No Plastic in Here

We don't care what Mama don't allow we're going to use plastic any.......whoops wait just a minute! Mama's right. We're not - repeat NOT going to use plastic....not for bridge pins, not for saddles, not for nuts, not for tuning buttons, and certainly not for binding. Compound the environmental damage caused by the never-ending flow of plastic waste with the fact that it degrades the looks and sound of an acoustic guitar. Call it "Acoustic pollution" and know you won't find plastic in any of our guitars.

We're a Different Kind of Guitar Maker

Direct to Musican with no middle men
Direct to Musican with no middle men

We differ from pretty much every other guitar maker in one really important way. We don't support a chain of distributors and dealers. We send our guitars directly to the musician who will play them. That means a 40% to 60% price saving even before Kickstarter reward deals.  but.....

It's Not About Us.... but About the People Who Play Our Guitars!

There's a hero in this story. Not John Marr or Jonathan MacKenzie, the owners of MacKenzie & Marr Guitars.  Not the craftspeople who's skill is reflected in the beauty and sound of each of guitars. Not even the guitars themselves.

No, the real hero in this campaign, and, for that matter every other MacKenzie & Marr story, is YOU. This whole Kickstarter campaign was put together for you. The spectacular Grand Manan was designed for you and one of them will be hand crafted specifically for you.

For us the ultimate thrill is the response from MacKenzie & Marr guitar owners, many of whom own multiple MacKenzie & Marr guitars and all of whom did not believe that guitars of this quality could be so inexpensive. They're our heroes.

Risks and challenges

Our last two Kickstarter projects ran a couple of months behind schedule. This time we think we've built enough of a cushion to account for unexpected setbacks. We're confident all rewards will be delivered in December but there's always the risk that something will cause a delay in production.
