About this project
The goal is to fund the publishing of a 10.5 X 12, full color throughout, 150 page coffee table book containing the behind the scenes story about how Stanley Kramer, fifty comics and a dozen stuntmen spent 1962 making an epic comedy that can never be equaled. This book is to be printed and bound in the United States.
With the success of Criterion's 50th Anniversary release of the landmark comedy, IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD, it is surprising to note that there has never been a book published on this internationally loved movie from the 60’s. The spirit of the era is captured by the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles, built to showcase this first successful big budget comedy. The run at the Dome lasted for an astounding 13 months.
The laughter of the audience helped heal the heart of the nation and the world when it hit the screens in November 1963, the same month as America lost its President and cultural icon, John Kennedy. Another major icon, Marilyn Monroe, was lost the year before. In the midst of uncertain times, the world needed a good belly laugh. The same statement may certainly be said fifty years later.
Passion for this comedic blockbuster keeps growing as in addition to the Criterion release, there have been special screenings, television airings, two recent sound track re-releases, as well as a ground swell of dedicated blogs, websites, podcasts, CDs of new musical interpretations and sales of IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD collectables.
The movie not only captured the hearts of baby boomers, but has also developed a cult following with those not yet born when it was released. One of those baby boomers grew up to be award-winning Disney Artist, Dave Woodman. IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD fired his imagination at an early age. This definitive book on the movie has been 45 years in the making. Comprehensive elements compiled by Mr. Woodman for IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD BOOK include:
Copies of every development letter from writer William Rose to Stanley Kramer, given to Dave Woodman by Bill's son, Kindred. Printing these letters,in essence, provides the book's background story of the making of IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD as written by the movie's writer himself.
Years of personal letters from and interview with writer Tania Rose. Mrs. Rose was interviewed by Mr. Woodman in England in 2010
Hundreds of individual articles, quotes and press releases about filming.
Hundreds of beautiful, never before published on location photos taken by a professional photographer hired for that purpose. No prints have ever been sold.
Professional color slides, never before published, taken on location by a member of the crew. No prints have ever been sold.
Captions, comments and insights written by IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD devotee, Jim Mulholland, accomplished comedy insider (vast credentials include current position as Writer for THE LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN, also wrote Johnny Carson’s monologues for THE TONIGHT SHOW for 20 years).
Steve Cox is a freelance writer and author of more than twenty books specializing in popular culture, film and television. He has explained the Fair Use law related to release of this collection and how this book qualifies as an historical document.
Special effects information and visuals (stunts, stop-motion, matte paintings, models, unusual make-up, etc.)
Movie posters, lobby cards and memorabilia from around the world from Mr. Woodman's extensive personal collection.
Unused Jack Davis art that includes Groucho Marx as one of the stars.
Found on location of the opening sequence car crash, a piece of glass from the Smiler’s car, may be included with each limited edition book. The book's unique unifying element is the IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD original art work, Photoshop wizardry and layout design by Disney Artist, Dave Woodman.
