We are building a life-sized two-story house made entirely with cardboard. It is structure as performance, and dance as architecture. Welcome to our
a dance performance and architectural installation created by Blake Beckham with Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects
Presented by The Lucky Penny with artistic direction by Malina Rodriguez
August 16-19, 2012
Threshold is a performance and installation that examines the home as both a sacred and profane place, using movement to explore liminal space and the psychological boundaries of dwelling spaces. The choreography explores the dialectics of interior and exterior, using the threshold as a central metaphor for addressing emotional edges. The project brings together a dizzying array of Atlanta’s brightest talent including award-winning architects, Mack Scogin and Merrill Elam, who are dedicating the resources of their firm to design and build the monumental paper structure. In addition to compelling new dance, Threshold will also feature original sound (Santiago Páramo), interior design (Jane Garver), video (Chelsea Raflo), lighting (Joseph Futral), costuming (Tian Justman) and sculpture (Karley Sullivan, George Long and more).
The Lucky Penny’s design team, cast and crew have been invited for a five-week residency at DramaTech, the black box theater at Georgia Tech’s Ferst Center. During the residency, our team will construct the set, rehearse and perform the piece. The generous load-in period gives us the chance to invite local artists and community partners into our process. We will engage a volunteer work force, offering meaningful opportunities to create under the mastery of our team leaders representing the fields of dance, architecture, design, visual art, and technical theater. A core design team of over 30 members is currently developing the performance and installation. They include students from Georgia Tech's School of Architecture, along with members of the schools' student-run theater company, DramaTech, working under the direction of our production leaders Susan Williams, Danny Davis and Nadia Morgan.
We need your help! Please consider contributing towards this ambitious project and unprecedented creative effort for Atlanta. Kickstarter funds will support artistic fees for our industrious design team, project leaders, and phenomenal dancers. Your gift will be rewarded with a special Threshold keepsake, and our immense gratitude. The Lucky Penny is a non profit organization. Every donor will be furnished with a receipt indicating the value of your rewards and tax-deductible portion of your donation.
