When I found out that I was accepted to the prestigious Arctic Circle residency, a three-week artist residency program on a majestic sailing ship that winds its way around the High Arctic, my thrill and excitement verged on sea-sickness. I was extremely honored and grateful for the opportunity to be adrift on the icy ocean with a select group of international artists and scientists to research and develop work in this endangered part of our world.
Much of my performance-based work depends on responses to specific situations and collaborations with other people. The project I will be working on is a culmination of a piece titled Minus Suitcase, in which I will take a single suitcase, containing the works of 19 artists, to the Arctic Circle, to initiate further collaborations with the international artists and scientists who will be on board the ship with me. I believe the ship’s quarters, the dramatic context of the High Arctic, and the brilliant, creative minds at work will incite truly compelling results. Check out my website for examples of other projects that involve collaboration. (http://yvajung.com/index.php...)
The suitcase can be seen as a portable studio, exhibition, and creative community, all in one luggage. It has already traveled to Asia, North America, Europe and Africa in the last three years where it was shown in various situations, from a gallery in Brooklyn, an alternative space in Seoul; a shopping mall in Montreal, Canada; and a river in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Even though I’ve been awarded the residency, I still must raise funds for expenses related to the expedition and this is where I am asking for your help. Any donation from you will go a long way in realizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and as a "Thank You" reward, I will take an item of your choice to be delivered to the Arctic Circle inside my suitcase. I will then make “Confirmation Photograph” of the item in the Arctic Circle for you; a collaborative piece of art between you and me. For an additional $50 donation, you also have an option to schedule a specific delivery time, i.e. Deliver at Polar night, Sunset, Aurora. I hope you’ll be able to support me in this project and that I can take a piece of you to the far reaches of the earth.
