About

Currently there is a "black hole' in Winlink radio coverage in the South Pacific. With the nearest Winlink stations in Hawaii, Mexico, the West coast of the United States, and New Zealand - all of which are over 2,000 nautical miles away it is frequently impossible to gain access to the winlink network (see www.winlink.org) to transmit and receive email, weather data, and other important safety notices due to propagation.

The "black hole" is centered around the Society Islands. The purpose of this project is the fund the necessary equipment to install a Winlink station in Nuku-Hiva, Marquesas.

The specific funding needs are for:

ICOM M802 MF/HF (SSB) marine transceiver,  (qnty 1)

ICOM AT-140 HF Antenna Tuner (qnty 1)

SCS Pactor Modem (PTC-IIIusb) (qnty 1)

ICOM OPC-147N Control Cable (qnty 1)

Custom connector cables

Total Price all of the above $ 3,749

220V to 12 VDC 40 amp Power Supply for above $500 (qnty 1)

Vertical Antenna (Hy-Gain AV-640 or equivalent) $500 (qnty 1)

Coax Cables, Computer Interface Cable, Assorted bits and parts.(est $250)

Antenna Mounting Hardware.(est. $250)

Customs Duties, Import Fees, Shipping (est. $ 1600)

French Marine Base Station Radio License (est. $ 150)

Installation assistance (work force) (est. $500)

Kickstarter Fees $830

The equipment will be housed at Nuku-Hiva Yacht Services in Taiohae, Nuku-Hiva, Marquesas, French Polynesia. They will contribute the necessary personal computer and access to the Internet. They will also maintain the equipment.

If possible the station will be extended to include Sailmail service. This will require additional licensing from the French Government.
