UPDATE #43

Dear Backers,

We sincerely apologize for all the delays. Everything we’ve done so far has been to ensure ZNAPS reaches your hands. We never planned for the problems and setbacks we’ve encountered and we are deeply sorry for mishandling them.

Since the beginning, we’ve wanted to keep everyone in the loop and really share this journey of manufacturing a new product together. However, somewhere along the way we’ve slipped up on communications a little bit. We want to apologize to everyone again for all the mistakes we’ve made. We don’t want to make excuses, but we’ve had to deal with a lot of frustration and stress from working with our manufacturers and suppliers. Nonetheless, we’ve continued to work really hard to get ZNAPS shipped and we have made significant progress since our last update.

For this update, we would like to start making amends by sharing more about the manufacturing process as a whole and the key areas where we have experienced a lot of difficulties. In doing so, we hope everyone gains a better understanding of everything that has happened.

A Little About the Technology

One of the reasons why ZNAPS has been so successful is its small size. No other copycat adapter has been able to copy ZNAPS’ size. That’s probably because they don’t have the same internal design as ours and they definitely aren’t using small enough pogo pins like we are. We originally didn’t want to expose any details about the internal structure of ZNAPS design, but have now decided to share it with everyone because 1) it’s an integral part of what we want to communicate in this update and 2) the patent issues we’ve experienced seems to have stabilized.

One of the key challenges we had to overcome from the beginning was to find small enough pogo pins that were also able to support a high enough electric current. We quickly found that the standard pogo pin design for the size we want simply didn’t work. Please take a look at the diagram below:

The standard pogo pin design allows for some of the electric current to be leaked into the spring. The spring can still conduct the electric current leaked into it, but due to it being very thin, the electric resistance is increased, so the electric current is conducted very inefficiently. Thus, the overall electric current that can pass through the pogo pin is reduced.

To solve the above problem, we found a solution that would not increase the size of the internal components of the ZNAPS adapter while maintaining the same electric current capacity. The answer was pogo pins with insulator ball technology.

As shown in the diagram, the insulator ball prevents the electric current from flowing through the spring and forcing the electric current to only flow through the body of the pogo pin. In this way, the pogo pins are able to support up to double its original electric current capacity.

The Problem

One of the main problems we’ve experienced, other than quality control, is slow rate of production. In order to produce the quantity of ZNAPS enough for Kickstarter backers and for our future sales, a fully automatic assembly is a must. However, our manufacturer has been really slow in ramping this process up to get the machines for automatic assembly ready for us.

Below you can see how the internal components of ZNAPS is mounted and the pogo pins are inserted by hand. To perform this simple action by hand is extremely time consuming, not to mention not as accurate, which explains the quality control issues we’ve experienced.

Knowing that we had already delayed ZNAPS shipping date a couple times before and we didn’t want to make our backers wait any longer, we took it upon ourselves to do the final assembly of ZNAPS ourselves. And that is why the first few shipments of ZNAPS has been small batch shipments.

The Solution

Due to their slow rate of production, the only viable solution to ramp up production was to change manufacturers. We’ve been working very hard for the past few months visiting multiple other possible manufacturers who would be able to help us and have finally come to terms with one. Changing manufacturers was a very difficult decision to make, but we were driven by the need to make sure all our backers get their rewards. Our new manufacturer is fully suited for automatic assembly and has even quoted a lower price per unit.

At the same time, we started receiving feedback from the first batch recipients. The feedback noted that ZNAPS still lacked stability. Please see video below:

This latest development was a shock. We had already double checked all the steps in the production process and done extensive quality control tests to ensure the assembled ZNAPS were working properly, because we didn’t want to disappoint our backers again. Here is where our new manufacturer stepped in to help. They were able to discern that the instability was due to pogo pin physical defects which do not affect performance until after short term use.

Although the durability defects we previously discovered were corrected, the pogo pins ended up having new internal physical defects. The defects are clearly shown in the graphic above and is the main cause for the instability. After further investigation, we discovered the pogo pin supplier from China made sure to provide very well made pogo pins to pass the quality control tests, but shipped us poorly made ones. In short, the pogo pin supplier tricked us, but we share half of that blame too, because we were the ones who chose to trust them to help in the production of ZNAPS. So once again, we want to sincerely apologize for our poor judgment, which resulted in the delays.

What’s Next?

Due to the problems with manufacturing described above, we have decided to temporarily suspend the shipments of ZNAPS until we have everything resolved. We have already lined up a new Taiwanese owned and operated pogo pin supplier. There was supposed to be a shipment of old pogo pins on July 20, but we have already rejected the order and got a full refund. The new batch by the new supplier is estimated to be ready on August 3 and we will post an update by August 5 at the latest. At that time, we will inform everyone about the new plan of action and timeline. In closing, we want to thank everyone again for your patience and we are confident ZNAPS will be ready for all of you very soon.

Electricity doesn't work like that. Any additional path for current to take, even one with very high resistance, can only decrease the total resistance. I was giving Znaps the benefit of the doubt since they've been good about providing us with updates. Now, though, that explanation calls their credibility into question. They have electrical engineers working on this, right? You can't be an electrical engineer if you can't even add resistors in parallel. In the world of E.E., that's kid stuff. What's going on here? The insulator ball is REDUCING the total current that can flow through the pogo pin.

While I understand that Kickstarter is not an online shop and that I contributed to production of the ZNAPS, I also backed a Kickstarter project that promised an estimated delivery of Nov 2015, short of one month off of a year, I still have not gotten the ZNAPS. It has been so long at this point I do not even have a MicroUSB phone anymore. I am not going to the back of the list. I am respectfully and understandably requesting a refund.
      Thank you for your time.

Guys, seriously, I've gave up on this project a long time ago and donated my backing money to you out of petty. But your update just left me no choice but to do another comment and completely regretted about even the petty donation. Here is why:

      Pogo pings existed for many many many years in testing equipment, as long as history of printed circuit board and you really can't call it a technology, since it's simply a component design and no tech to it;

Secondly may I say your insulator ball "technology" is completely bullsh*t? The diagram you draw doesn't make any sense from a simple high school physics standpoint. Your "electric current capacity" is simply called the current, which as you illustrated goes via two paths on both the pin body and the spring in parallel. So now explain everyone, how the fck on earth you could improve the conductance of the entire pin by insulating the spring path with a ball?!!! Come on guys, if you really want to make something up, please do a bit homework first and don't say sh*t just because nobody here could hold you to account.

Also, your manufacturer (or any manufacturer) only gonna be as professional as you are and works towards as high standard as you hold yourself to. How on the earth did you guys arrived to a conclusion that since the manufacturer can't keep up to the production ramp by manually assemble your sh*tty design, it'd be better and faster that you do it by yourself----manually?!!!

This is outrageous, not just because of you guys sucks, but also because the kickstarter team hasn't seem done anything about this bunch of slacky jokers. @Kickstarter, if you are about to block this comment, I'd like to get a personal explanation about what have you put in place to filtering the quality of project entries? How would you qualify the teams on your market place has the integrity and the skills to deliver whatever they've faked up in their promo videos, while you taking a decent percentage of cut on the campaign money.

Soon it will become useless as Apple and other brands move to usb-c. Since you are already late, why don't you just develop a new usb-c adapter so we won't receive some deprecated stuff that we will never use?

      Thanks you.

I gave up. I finally called my credit card company and disputed the charges. I repeatedly used the term fraud and theft, noting the 30 to 60 day email updates which appeared to be designed so folks wouldn't dispute the credit card charges for at least 180 days. At 180 days out, you lose the right to dispute a cc charge. Unless you can prove deliberate theft or fraud. Which by providing the bogus updates substantiated my case.

If you're going to dispute the charges and hope to win; repeat the phrase "Fraud and Theft" over and over. Only then will your credit card company take your side (maybe)... It worked for me and I got my money back.

Please be discouraged by negative comments. Liars deserve discouragement. Frauds deserve worse than that.

My funds are in your good hands. Thanks for going all out to ensure that you are providing a quality product, not like some other projects which brushes away all minor issues causing their products not to work after a few months. I'm still looking forward. There are two kinds of people, those who thinks about themselves and how great their funds are and expect every single cent's worth back and those who believe in what you are doing and how it will make it more convenient for us, those who believe in dreams and inventions and wishes for it to come true. Thank you for even starting this project. Please don't be discouraged by negative comments, keep up your good work, you know that everyone is looking forward to see the finished products!

For all the negative, impatient comments, please understand how crowdfunding works. Developing a product takes time and has speed bumps, if you don't trust the kick-starter.... why did you even pledge...? This isn't e-bay or amazon, the whole idea of KS is to SUPPORT the project. If you can't understand that please don't ever become a consumer. Make your own products so you won't have to be ungrateful for people who design and develop products to make your life more comfortable. If you are an Engineer, this is more reason to make your own equipment. We're all vested, some more than others. If you're so butt hurt about KS, don't come back, negativity doesn't help or contribute anything to the situation, it just proves how petty and selfish consumerism is.

Tomorrow guys, tomorrow. What I find sad is that some people actually believe in all the smoke and mirrors used by ZNAPS. I feel so mean :-) My BS detector has exploded a month ago.

    17. Pryor on August 4

It's sad that critical thinking isn't being used by more defenders of these clowns. If you read the last dozen or so updates and your bullshit detector isn't going off then I have a bridge to sell you.

The delay isn't necessarily the issue. Znaps is likely lying. Wether it is due to fraud or incompetence remains to be seen. But this pattern of gauge updates that barely inform anyone of anything and often contradicting the previous updates has many of us ready to let the credit card companies handle this mess.

    18. Giuseppe Romanelli on August 4

It's funny (and also a bit sad) to see all the mean and insulting comments here. @my dear fellow backers who are furious - this ain't no amazon or ebay - this is crowdfunding. Yes I also would like to have znaps in my hands, but I prefer waiting and then have an excellent product instead of a badly designed one. Please do me a favor and don't back any projects anymore here - all this hate and rage does not help at all.

    21. Ambrose on August 4

I don't know why the creators keep coming up with lame excuses trying to insult us, you have taken our money already, us the people that trusted you the most and spat in our face, just admit you have stolen our money by announcing that you have gone "bankrupt"

    22. Oldbergh on August 4

Just bought 2 extra cables form aliexpress.com; Wsken mini 2. The first two cables works good. So I am glad for now to use this for all devices. Znaps please make a good product. I'll wait.

    23. LaurenLaz on August 4

I backed another project that is two years out from funding and is NEVER going to deliver. They haven't updated anyone in six months and hardly updated anyone before that. This has only been a year and there have been updates. If we never get this cable, or if it takes another year...then I'll be mad. But, everyone is getting unnecessarily worked up over rather small amounts here. And if the average pledge isn't small amount to you, you probably shouldn't be backing projects and (technically) risking your money. And kickstarter isn't going to do a darn thing even if we all contact them. They've refused to do anything except contact the project creators in the above mentioned project and that company has been silent (aka no update) for six months! I'd like that company to account for their spending, but again 2 or more years and no communication will do that. Perspective everyone...

    24. LaurenLaz on August 4

Thanks for providing this update. My need for charging cables hasn't diminished at all, so I guess I'll be happy whenever it arrives lol.

    31. Pryor on August 3

A tip for chargebacks, don't be afraid to explain the situation. Be sure to explain that Znaps keeps delaying the ship dates with probable fraudulent excuses. Ask to speak with supervisors. One can also send a letter to the fraud department with a timetable of delays. Remember the only thing you will lose at this point is time, and the worst thing that can happen is they say no. It's not about the money, it's letting sleaze bags like this get the money.

    37. John Hancock Sr on August 2

You explanation of the reason for the insulating ball is contradicted by basic circuit theory. Like water the electrons will flow using the path of least resistance so adding the ball will not decrease the resistance, it will in fact increase the resistance. So as such is useless. Having said that it must call into question your competence. If you get your basic electronics engineering wrong what else did you get wrong? At this stage I am sorely tempted to cut my losses and buy another product.

    38. Shawn Goodman on August 2

Is it me, or does this update seem like it should have been tested and / or figured out LONG ago?
How in any way, shape, or form have you not figured this out? You've had a YEAR to get this up and running.
You're temporarily suspending shipments? Did you even ship anything in the first place? I filled out my backer survey 09/06/2015, never got chosen for a "beta tester" spot, and i'm really starting to think that i just basically lost money.

Hell even if i got basic items sent to me instead of the special ones i got for my backer level i'd be happy.

What is being done to compensate us, the people who LITERALLY MADE THIS PRODUCT POSSIBLE? Are we going to have to continue to deal with the "Sorry but (insert excuse here)" updates? Are you going to include anything for those of us who have been waiting patiently for over a year now? How are YOU going to make this right?

Multiple people have pointed out that your explanation for the "problem" that this resistor ball is supposed to be fixing is 100% wrong. It could only be more wrong if it involved evil spirits.

After several days, I'm kind of concerned... either you don't have a single competent electrical engineer in the loop, or you're actively trying to scam us.

Too many people are posting that they saw a similar product and show a cable solution. This is not a cable. I like the Znaps idea due to the choice of cable is being left up to you. I have short cables on my night stand and longer ones to reach my desk. Keeps things tidy. Znaps should be durable enough to last a life time if used properly. With the cable solutions, the cable breaks, pet chews on it, etc. you will have a hard time replacing it. Znaps, just remove the cable adapter and place it on a new cable and you are using it again in no time.

I don't mind how long this project is taking. I would rather get a well made product then one that needs to be replaced in a short time or is not working.
