When one of the most prolific art forgers in US history is finally exposed, he must confront the legacy of his 30-year con.

About this project

Hello, and welcome!

Please spread the word for our Kickstarter campaign. LIKE us on Facebook + JOIN our mailing list. We just started tweeting here too!

THE STORY:

Mark Landis has been called one of the most prolific art forgers in US history. His impressive body of work spans thirty years, covering a wide range of painting styles and periods that includes 15th Century Icons, the Hudson River School, and even Picasso. And while his copies could fetch impressive sums on the open market, Landis has never been in it for the money. Posing as a philanthropic donor, a grieving executor of a family member’s will, and most recently as a Jesuit priest, Landis has given away hundreds of works over the years to a staggering list of institutions across the United States. But, when Matthew Leininger, a registrar in Cincinnati, discovers his thirty-year ruse and organizes an exhibition of the work, Landis must confront his legacy and a chorus of museum professionals clamoring for him to stop.

And yet it’s not so clear that he can. An outsider who craves connection and respect, Landis is a diagnosed schizophrenic whose drive to create and donate forgeries stems from a need to socialize in settings where he’s comfortable and in control. It’s a circumstance he’s come to understand as an outright “addiction to philanthropy.”

Enriched by testimony and scenes featuring health care providers, law enforcement officials, museum professionals, and art historians directly connected to Landis’ story, Art and Craft begins in the early days of Landis’ public discovery and ends in the months after the first public exhibition of his body of work. What starts out as an art caper, rooted in questions of originality and authenticity, emerges as an unflinching exploration of life with mental illness and the universal need for community, appreciation, and purpose.

OUR GOAL:

Production of Art and Craft began in February 2011, and since then, the film has received support from the Tribeca Film Institute Documentary Fund, Catapult Film Fund, the Jerome Foundation, and NYSCA, among others. We just completed the edit and are now looking for funding to finish the film.

We need to raise at least $48,250 to fund the sound mix/edit, the film score (by the stellar Stephen Ulrich), graphics, and travel expenses to our festival premiere for Mark Landis.

Below is budget breakdown that outlines our overall financial needs, including the Kickstarter goal which covers immediate expenses.

We will use every single dollar raised in our Kickstarter campaign to bring Art and Craft to life. Please help us get there.

Risks and challenges

Over the past three years, we’ve traveled across the country on shoots, spent countless hours in the edit, and now we’re almost done!

But the film cannot live in our computer, and, as we wrap up the final stages of post-production on Art and Craft, our primary goal is to be sure our film gets seen. As we work towards completion and (with your help) to raise funds to master the film, we’ll be pursuing distribution. We expect to screen the film at festivals this year, but one very real risk and challenge for this campaign is the potential for delays in delivering DVDs and the availability of digital delivery per our distributors’ schedule.

All delivery dates are estimates only and subject to change at any time.

If we are behind schedule, we will promptly notify all funders. That said, all non-film related rewards should be fulfilled well before May 2015 — within 4 months after the completion of our campaign.
