About this project
Be a part of our efforts to preserve and protect our LGBT history!
New goal! Due to the overwhelming early support for our project we are raising our goal so we can include additional historic materials. Details here. Help keep the momentum going!
DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS (German title: ANDERS ALS DIE ANDERN), directed by Richard Oswald and co-written by the famed psychologist who founded the German homosexual emancipation movement in 1897, Magnus Hirschfeld, is believed to be the only film of a group of gay-friendly movies made during Germany’s Weimar Era that escaped systematic destruction by the Nazis.
Our work on this film will ensure that the message of tolerance and acceptance that was made so courageously in 1919 in Germany will continue to inspire generations to come.
We need your help!
Our photochemical film restoration will guarantee that a negative and prints will be archived as part of the Legacy Collection at the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the world’s largest collection of LGBT moving images with over 20,000 pieces. Following the restoration, Outfest and UCLA will reintroduce DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS to the world by making 35mm prints of the newly restored version available for theatrical exhibition.
Outfest hosted a sneak preview of the work-in-progress restoration to a rapt audience and tremendous applause at the Legacy Awards on October 13th, 2012, in order to spread the word about this invaluable project and evidence its historic importance.
But before we can formally take it back out into the world, we need to fund and complete the remainder of the restoration work. Consider making this film a part of your legacy by contributing to our efforts.
After restoring the film, we will create extra content designed to position the film as an invaluable and crucial teaching tool: noted actors reading the film’s prologue in voiceover, a new score, and a series of clips with experts and noted artists discussing the film’s historical significance.
We will partner with like-minded organizations to create educational kits for 35mm screenings and DVD dissemination to high school and college campuses.
The restoration of DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS is without question our most ambitious and most important project to date. Together, we have an extraordinary opportunity not only to make history, but to preserve history in the process.

Risks and challenges
Thanks to the stability and reputation of the UCLA Film & Television Archive, and our past 18 film and video restorations, we know that this will be completed.
We will be able to fulfill all rewards by December with the exception of the DVD of the completed restoration. As noted in the rewards section, these will be produced and sent once the final restoration is complete. At the latest this will be late 2013.
We will communicate regularly with our contributors to update you on the status of the project and the ETA for the final DVD.
