Looking good on paper isn't enough, of course. The design had to work as a physical product. Extensive prototyping confirmed the quality of our final design.
Our company is made up of engineers and dreamers, tech geeks and creatives. Our team has the burning desire to make virtual reality accessible to a wider range of people - not just gamers or techies.
When Google unveiled Cardboard at the Google I/O conference in 2014, we immediately started cutting bits of cardboard to make our own headsets. A few days later, production of our first headsets began. Within the week, we had our first cardboard kits up for sale. These kits would later received Google’s own badge of approval. This was the start of I AM Cardboard.
Today, we are one of the top makers of Google Cardboard kits. On top of our design and manufacturing capabilities, we have a wide network of suppliers, and shipping partners. This enables us to make cool products, and get them to people who want them.
After releasing our first kits, we wanted to create something even cooler. On January 5, 2015, we unveiled the XGVR headset through Kickstarter. The project was funded in three days, and eventually got over four times its original funding goal.
After the XGVR campaign, we wanted to make a more portable headset that sacrifices none of the fun. That viewer is, of course, the dscvr headset.
Risks and challenges
Our mission is to make virtual reality more accessible. This is why we devoted resources to designing and making a working prototype. Doing so was consistent with our mission. We want people to see (and get excited over) a fully-realized product.
As with our previous Kickstarter campaign, I AM Cardboard maintains a network of reliable suppliers that helps lessen the risk of taking the dscvr headset through the manufacturing process.
The mission doesn't end with just making the product - safe, reliable shipping is also a primary concern. With our experience dealing with international markets, and our strategic presence in the ports of Hong Kong, and Shenzhen, we're ready to step up to the challenge of shipping the dscvr headset to an international market.
We also need your support to overcome these challenges. With your pledge, we will be able to take the product through the manufacturing and shipping stages. Together, we can make the dscvr headset a reality!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
