I'm Julie McKay Covert and my project is the professional publication of a high-quality, photography coffee table book, Art of Winter.
Art of Winter is a photographic presentation of the art that winter creates with snow and ice. This full color hardcover book will be 90+ pages in length and contain over 175 full color images. In addition to stunning and unique photographs there are two essays about the beauty of winter and photography. It has received praise from internationally recognized nature photographers. See Update #4 & 6.
The purpose of this book is to allow you to see and enjoy nature’s winter wonderland. This book is for you and every one else who does not want to or is unable to live in a remote area, in the northern part of the United States where single digit temperatures can be the norm. It is for you and all who do not want to wander around an icy lakeshore just as the sun rises. And it is for you and all the other people who have fond memories of water, snow, ice, and the Great Lakes.
Why photograph winter?
When I first moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan I anticipated spending many winter hours indoors, reading books and working on projects. My husband and friends spoke about the pleasures of winter hiking excursions and camping. Even though I liked snow I generally did not jump at the chance to freeze my nose just for the sake of being outside in sub-freezing weather. My husband encouraged me to get out and enjoy the crisp mornings before the day got away from me. So I did and my camera was my constant companion.
After a few mornings, I quickly realized that what I saw along Lake Huron’s shoreline could possibly be gone within hours or at the latest, the next day. The water in its various forms of snow and ice mutated and transformed quickly, especially when there were winds and waves to sculpt it. Wintery water was the ultimate transmutator of nature. Each morning became a treasure hunt. Art of Winter is a collection of photographs taken on these walks.
Who I am
Photography has been an avocation of mine for over fourteen years. Once I was at a crossroads and had to decide whether to do photography professionally or do bodywork to make a living. My master photography instructor and a few other professional photographers said, "Julie you have what it takes to do photography professionally. However, if you want to continue enjoying photography don't do it for a living." I chose to go into bodywork to make my living, which pays for my photographic pursuits. Photography has been a creative expression of how I see of the world. I use photography to show others what delights me. And I hope you have joy looking at my images.
Why your support matters to me
These images have been described as amazing and beautiful. I have been encouraged to make these images publicly available in the form of a coffee table book. Your support enables me to pay for the printing of this hard-bound book through Codra Printers. The first print run will be 1000 copies. Your backing enables me to pay for high quality printing using an off-set press and print full page bleeds. Off-set printing is expensive but allows for a higher quality publication than is available with print-on-demand.
Already in the works, this coffee table book is a piece of art from cover to cover. Each part of this project will be done thoroughly and expertly; the images, design, dust jacket, interior pages, binding, and distribution. Your financial support assures that these will be professionally done allowing you to be proud to show off this beautiful book and say, “I helped make this happen!”
Where the money goes
My goal is to raise $8000, which is only possible with your help and the help of your friends and family. This pays for the printing of 1000 copies. The total estimated cost of the publication of this book is $18,000. After the first $8000 is raised this Kickstarter project is a success, but the costs do not stop there. Any additional contributions from you will pay for the other expenses involved with creating a professional publication. The more you contribute the easier it is for me to make this happen.
I believe in this book, Art of Winter, and want to assure that it happens. Therefore I am contributing my own savings to cover the amount not raised through this Kickstarter project. Those costs include, among other things, professional graphics design and file preparation by Gritton Design which assures a high quality book.
How else you can help
I appreciate your contribution to this project and the help does not stop there. I also need your help getting the word out to all your family and friends. Please use the Facebook/LinkedIn/Twitter like buttons to encourage everyone you know to join in the creation of this beautiful book.

Frequently asked questions:
Why not search for a traditional publisher?
When I was first approached by the owner of a bookstore about publishing this book I started to research what was involved with the printing and publication of a photography coffee table book. After discussions with other photographers, who had successfully self-published coffee table books, I decided to heed their advice and self-publish to maintain artistic control.
Why not use print-on-demand?
There have been great advances with print-on-demand and online companies that allow a person to create photography books. However, when it comes to publishing a full-color book there are design limitations and the cost would exceed $50 per copy. This then becomes prohibitive for many who want to buy a reasonably priced book.
Why are you printing so many copies?
I want Art of Winter to be enjoyed by as many people as possible. I am printing 1000 copies for a couple of reasons. I have bookstores and others already wanting to purchase this book. This is the quantity where pricing becomes viable to offer this book wholesale to bookstores. And I don’t want to run out because I foresee you wanting to order additional copies of this unique photography book as gifts for family and friends.
When will the book be published?
The book is scheduled to be published mid-summer 2012. So you should receive your copy the end of July or beginning of August along with the appropriate additional premiums.
