Skies of Fire is a limited comic series by Vincenzo Ferriero and Ray Chou, with art by Pablo Peppino, Bryan Valenza, and Nic J Shaw. Skies was launched in on Kickstarter and subsequently releases each new issue on the platform.
This Kickstarter's goal is to raise funds to print issue #3. Any additional funds will go directly into the production of issue #4 and the reprinting of #1-2.
Skies of Fire takes place in the Aquilan Empire, a kingdom where airship travel has become the dominant means of transportation, commerce, and war. In the center of the Empire lies a monstrous, never-ending storm called The Expanse.
In Issue One, the raider Delmonte orchestrates a surprise attack on the key trade outpost, Port Prince.
His actions prompt Royal Guard Captain Helen Pierce to volunteer for an expedition to bring him to justice.
In Issue Two, Captain Pierce enlists the help of the elusive William.
Issue Three follows the pair as they continue assembling the rest of the crew for their mission in the bordertown of Copperhead.
Vincenzo Ferriero and Ray Chou have been creating stories together since 2008. They met in college and continue to collaborate despite being 5,437 miles apart.
Pablo Peppino is a an illustrator from Argentina with a focus on sequential art. His work can be found in publications from Mythopoeia to Marvel to Boom! He recently moved to Valencia where he now draws full time.
Bryan Valenza is an artist based in Jakarta, Indonesia. He currently occupies his time coloring various projects, including Skies of Fire and Aftershock's InSexts.
Nic J Shaw is a writer, letterer, and graphic designer. His work can be found everywhere - no seriously, Nic seems to know everyone. He lives in Sydney, Australia with his fiancée and their schnauzer, Archer.
Josephe Vandel is a German cartographer and graphic designer with a love for RPGs and creating fictional worlds.
Alexandur Bucur is an architect and illustrator with an interest in history and military hardware of all kinds. When not at his drawing table he can be found standing at attention in a swanky uniform for the benefit of the Military Traditions branch of the Romanian Army.
Pawel Fotek is a self taught artist from Poland who jumped on the art train pretty late, at the age of 21. Since his early years he's always scribbled on the back of his notebooks during most classes. After graduating from high school, Pawel went to study economics at a local university, yet deep inside he felt that it's wasn't something he'd like to pursue in life, and that place was only ensuring him in his beliefs. One cold winter morning he woke up and simply decided to quit the uni and train very hard to become a professional artist. He has not looked back ever since.
The Skies of Fire team stands by their policy of transparency when it comes to crowdfunding. The funds for this Kickstarter will be used as follows:
Skies of Fire is printed in a beautiful 8x11" oversized format that showcases the incredible talent of our artists. The size harkens to a European aesthetic, reflecting the diverse background of the people working on the project.
In addition to the story, each issue contains a 3-4 page codex in the back of the book. The codex provides additional background and context to the world much like an old school video game manual or tabletop rulebook.
Variant covers give us an opportunity to showcase and collaborate with artists whose work otherwise might not be shown in comics. For issue two, our variant cover is done by the extremely talented Pawel Fotek with letters by Alex Bucur.
We mail our comics bagged and boarded in sturdy chipboard mailers. Chipboard mailers are incredibly durable and almost impossible to bend. They'll keep the comics safe as they're in transit to you while the bags and boards will ensure they'll continue to remain in mint condition for years to come.
The rest of our of packaging includes three inch diameter cardboard tubes for posters and cardboard parcel packages for large orders, along with bubble wrap.
To purchase Add-Ons, simply add the amount in red to your order. Additionally, you may also wait until the end of the campaign and purchase add-ons through BackerKit, where you will be able to select additional a la carte items for purchase after you confirm your shipping information.
If you are adding-on a poster print and are based outside of the US, please add the following amount for shipping ONLY IF you do not have any other posters included in your backer reward:
Canada / Mexico: $10
United Kingdom / EU: $6
Rest of World: $14
Risks and challenges
This will be our 3rd Kickstarter project and at this point we have a good idea of what to expect before, during, and after the campaign. The main challenge we've faced in our past two is delivery - we strive always to deliver rewards to our backers in a timely manner, and though we've gotten faster each time, there is still room for improvement.
For this campaign we plan on ordering the books as soon as we have a good guess about the demand, potentially 1-2 weeks in. We also plan on streamlining the logistics for some of our higher-end reward tiers, and are looking into the possibility of a fulfillment service if the demand is great enough.
The production of issue three is completely done, so the timeline is all about printing and shipping the books.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
