This project will revolve around a three-week study abroad session at the renown International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy (www.giotto.org). In addition to the mesmerizing Italian artworks and serene landscape, this summer the group will make a trip to visit the Venice Biennale, a biannual major contemporary art exhibition. While working with a diverse and distinguished faculty, I will be creating a series of sketches and paintings that continue to explore a reality that resides in both the tangible world of our daily existence, and the spiritual realm of indefinite possibility. All my life, I have felt a strong bond between self and nature. This realization has led me down an enlightening path of self-discovery and spiritual awakening. As a result, I create amalgamations of the natural and the abstract; a tangible reality as opposed to one of impermanent flux. Of specific relation is the awareness of the self within this scenario. Who am I? On a conscious level, what does it mean to be singular amongst such multiplicity? These questions arise as you determine your place in my strange and ephemeral compositions.
My work approaches this dialogue from the Buddhist notion of samsara, or cyclic existence. From this vantage point, all stem from a universal nature that requires adaptation and instinct. These paintings embrace a greater understanding of the self, while simultaneously functioning didactically to express an elemental origin, transcending species and physical matter.
An investigation of Italian art and culture will introduce a new philosophy into my work that cannot be speculated, but instead requires a basis in empirical research. With funding, I will have the opportunity to develop a body of work that directly reflects these humanistic insights.
Risks and challenges
The main obstacle I may face upon completion of this project, would be the potential for issues to arise when shipping the work back home to the United States. Be it financial or practical. In consideration to this problem, I have decided to create my artwork on sealed and sized paper. This will allow shipment to be simple and economical.
I do not foresee any other potential hazards within this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
