It is with great excitement and anticipation that I announce my recent invitation to attend a 2-week residency at "The Lake" in Loleta, CA. My intention is to filter experiential inspirations from the unique atmosphere into a series of intimate drawing/paintings. With these natural still lifes, I hope to reflect the vastness present in the finite.
The Morris Graves Foundation is devoted to perpetuating the legacy of Mr. Graves. They offer a serene environment, and in turn require complete surrender to all means of distraction (i.e. technology, society, etc.). The preserved grounds include 195 acres of forested land surrounding a 6-acre lake. Access is provided to Mr. Graves' archives, library, art for study, and studio space. Information on the residency and application process is sparse due to the MGF's reclusive, private disposition; however, additional details for this unique foundation may be viewed here: http://seattletimes.com/pacificnw/2001/1209/cover.html.
My most recent paintings result as a combination of deep spiritual internalization and the physical act of diving. The diver is weightless, quiet, and aware of every breath. The vastness of every direction leaves a disorienting sentiment. The chromatically desaturated flora and fauna, a result from deeper submersion, produce a neutral aesthetic and enhance the perception of nature as a functioning whole. Such phenomena reveal distinct correlation with the search for transcendence. My experience at "The Lake" will be an opportunity for absolute release from the distracting elements in modern society. Meditation, yoga, and exploration of the grounds will form daily rituals. It will allow me to simply be, and record this state through my creative process.
In May 2014, I will receive a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art from the University of South Carolina; therefore, this residency comes at a significant point in my career. Over the past three years, I have been fully committed to my artistic expansion and development. This process has been, and remains, intense. The residency will run from June 3-21, 2014, and I will be able to fully immerse myself in the serene location and begin the decompression process. I feel exceptionally motivated for this artistic and spiritual journey.
Unfortunately, I lack the appropriate funding to commit to this endeavor. Room and board are covered by the MGF; however, costs for travel and supplies are not. I am kindly asking for your assistance to help make this dream a reality. $1500 will cover the cost of roundtrip airfare (Columbia, SC to Loleta, CA) and art materials (i.e. paper, graphite, pastels, inks, etc.) for completion of the project.
If you have any questions regarding the details of this project, please do not hesitate to email.
With love and appreciation,
Risks and challenges
In all honesty, I do not see any foreseeable obstacles with this project. Of course if any should arise, I will work to my best ability to concur and overcome them! I am extremely adaptable.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
