This iconic line begins Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, one of the great romances of all time. Our goal is to bring this wonderful work of literature to life in an edition beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Janet Lee, with a cover by award-winning artist Jean Masetti.
We’re incredibly excited to have Janet on board for this project, and she’s been turning out some amazing illustrations for this book. A recipient of the Eisner Award for her work on the graphic novel Return of the Dapper Men, Janet’s subsequent work includes the Marvel Classics comic book series Emma and Northanger Abbey.
We’ve married Janet’s immense talents with the immortal words of Jane Austen, and we think you’re going to fall in love with the result.
For our initial goal, Janet is producing twelve full-color, full page illustrations of critical scenes from Pride and Prejudice.
She’s also producing twenty partial-page black and white illustrations that will flow with the text of the book.
Finally, Janet is individually illustrating the beginning letter of the text of each chapter, like this:
We’ve also enlisted award-winning artist Jean Masetti to produce a beautiful original art front and back cover for the book. We think you'll agree with us that Jean has managed to capture the spirit of the book wonderfully.
But there’s more! As we reach stretch goals, we’ll be adding full-color, full-page illustrations and black and white partial page illustrations to the book, until we’ve reached a total of twenty-four full-page illustrations and thirty partial page illustrations.
Everyone working on this project has a passion for Pride and Prejudice, and we want to produce a beautiful book that’s going to be accessible to as wide an audience as possible. Toward that end, we’re producing several editions of the book.
The eBook will feature custom cover art by artist Jean Masetti. It will also contain all of the illustrations created by for the project by Janet Lee.
The trade paperback will also feature the custom cover art by Jean Masetti and contain all of the illustrations created for the project by Janet Lee. All illustrations in the trade paperback will be in grayscale.
Each premium hardcover edition of Pride and Prejudice Illustrated by Janet Lee will be printed by an off-set printer and bound in a high-quality cloth. They will feature the custom cover art by Jean Masetti. The full-page illustrations will be found on illustration plates throughout the book, with a full-color illustration on each side of the page. These illustration plates will be separated from the text-printed pages by tissue paper to maintain the beauty of the artwork. This edition of the book will also have a ribbon bookmark.
The pages of this book will be Smyth Sewn. Smyth Sewn book bindings are the highest quality book binding available on the market today. The pages are physically sewn into the book using binders thread and further reinforced with fabric backing and adhesive to create the most usable and durable books available.

The top edge of the pages will be treated to protect from dust and make the presentation really stand out. The spine will have headcaps and raised bands to create a truly classic look.
The 1894 Sangorski & Sutcliffe Peacock edition of Pride and Prejudice is one of the most beautiful books ever made. Obviously, the price and extreme rarity of that binding make it impossible for most people to ever even touch one. We’ve searched extensively and found a binder to recreate that iconic book. The cost of production is high, but the result is a true masterpiece whose price is many multiples lower than the original.
This will be a truly fine binding, with handsewn headbands, gilt inner dentelles, leather joints inside, formed headcaps, corner mitered and filled, and more. Each book will come in a cloth-covered clamshell presentation box.
We’re all very excited to be a part of this. With your help, we can create a book that everyone will be proud to have in their library. So, please take a look at the add-ons and stretch goals below, then look at the reward levels to the right and decide how you’d like to become a part of bringing Pride and Prejudice to life.
To select an Add-On, you would just increase your current pledge by the amount of the item(s) you wish to add on. There's no need to message us about the add-on right now UNLESS you're adding on one of the limited editions of the hardcover (The Rosings or The Pemberley). After the Kickstarter is over, we'll send out a survey and ask you if you contributed for anything additional. At that point, you'll let us know what item(s) you added on.
In addition to the books, there are other goodies you can get by looking at the rewards to the right:
Lizzy Bennett Christmas ornaments from Janet Lee.
This exclusive ornament is created using an original design which is decoupaged by hand to its painted base using the same technique Janet Lee employed to create her award-winning book, Return of the Dapper Men. These ornaments will only be available as part of this Kickstarter campaign.
A handcrafted fan by Gloria Sheu (In The Long Run on Etsy) featuring artwork from the book.

We're going all out to produce a truly collectible book, and we want to ensure that it makes its way to you in excellent condition. To that end, we'll be shipping all print books in sturdy boxes like this one:
Each book will also be wrapped in a protective wrapping to insulate it from the elements during its journey to you.
Risks and challenges
There are risks and challenges with any project, but as with our previous Kickstarters we’ve minimized them considerably. The book is written, obviously, and available in the public domain. We just have to illustrate it! Janet Lee is already working on illustrations that we'll be able to show you throughout the funding process.
The biggest challenge for a publisher, other than getting the content in and formatted, is generally timely printing. For this very special project, we are working closely with artisan book binders to create the three different hardcovers. There is always a chance that it will take longer than expected to acquire materials and begin production. If that happens and it causes the project to run past the promised date, we will send out regular status updates until the books have arrived.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
