About

Project-Pyxis is the first standalone HDMI ambient lighting device for your television. It illuminates the wall with the same colors being displayed on the screen; in REAL-TIME!

The effect creates a deeper immersion into your entertainment and broadens the viewing area of your display; offering a gradient lighting that’s easier on your eyes.

Pyxis illuminates your wall behind your television with hundreds of LEDs by interacting with the image being displayed on the screen. The device does this by intercepting your HDMI signal and sampling the edges of the screen to compute LED color values.

Pyxis is very small, about 2.8 inches L x 2.8 inches W x 1.5 inches H. Outside the device you have an LED strip that is densely packed with lighting and all the necessary cabling. Absolutely nothing else is required for your entertainment other then what we provide.

This means no lingering external devices such as converters and splitters, no programming, no PCs, and no further installation. Pyxis works straight out of the box in less than 5 minutes.

Because Pyxis is completely self-contained, it works with almost every HDMI source device you can imagine. Blu Ray, Playstation, XBox, PC, and anything else imaginable. If your source has HDMI output, Pyxis will know what to do. This is thanks to HDMI protocol and HDCP compliance.

A large amount of the funds raised is going towards HDCP compliance. HDCP is a copyright protection technology that media providers place on their content. Over $16,000 of the amount raised will cover annual licensing fees of HDCP, required for playback of copyrighted media over HDMI. HDCP will allow us to playback nearly every form of media, ultimately insuring that Pyxis works with practically everything, every time.

What makes Pyxis special from any other project is its self-containment. There’s zero software, converters, splitters, and computers required. Lastly, the device runs off of HDMI and is HDCP compliant, another industry first. In short, Pyxis is the first fully self-contained HDMI ambient lighting device on the market.

Setup of Pyxis is very simple and can be done within minutes.

1. Hang your LEDs

2. Run cabling (Source HDMI, TV HDMI, LED)

3. Plug in power

That’s it! Pyxis will power up and handle the rest, giving you instant access to enriched entertainment.

Our costs are broken up into 7 key categories, believe it or not but nearly 25% of our funding needs go towards royalty fees of HDMI and HDCP, a necessity for us to ensure that Pyxis works with every device.

1. HDCP Royalty - this is a fee that all vendors pay to playback copyright protected content, such as Blu-Ray. This fee is little known to the public but necessary for anyone trying to make an HDMI device.

 2. HDMI Royalty - Atop of paying for copyright protected content playback, we have to pay the patent owners of HDMI to use their port in our device. Again, the public rarely sees these expenses but they are necessary for HDMI.

3. Components, $30,000 - all the resistors, transistors, FPGA, ADV chips and other board components

4. Manufacturing, $15,750 - this is the fee that the manufacturers charge to make Pyxis

5. Manufacturing NRE, $5,850 - these are the stencil, tooling, programming and general setup costs of the machines that will manufacture Pyxis

6. Contractor, $10,000 - we have assistance for manufacturing engineering and electrical engineering to ensure that we meet excellence

7. Legal Admin, $2,755 - the fees associated with administrative help, such as financial advice, state registration fees, and other costs for bureaucracy

We need your help! We finally crafted our working device and we’re nearly ready to offer it to you. The largest items requiring our attention include:

1. HDCP Application Process

2. Programming of Advanced Features such as timer, color correction, etc.

3. Rework of cabling to bring cost down and make product more consumer friendly

4. Quality Assurance testing of our final assembly to guarantee functionality.

We are sharing Project Pyxis on Kickstarter because we need enough demand to drive the manufacturing costs down through bulk order pricing and to apply for HDCP compliance.

The technology is there and functioning well, we need your help to make it something more.

Risks and challenges

1. The hardware for Pyxis is complete and manufacturers are sourced. We've come a long ways from our prototype. The product you see today saves $100 per device compared to the prototype. This is accomplished by shaving off un-necessary resources such as FPGA gates, memory, and other components that aren't utilized.

2. We are actively focusing on programming for the board. We currently have the HDMI sampling code formalized, we still need to develop the advanced features and timer. This is not a concern with regard to cost or design, those attributes are finalized with confidence. The floating resource with this statement is time, we are aiming for May 2016 finalization with the caveat that good code needs nurturing.

3. The cable linking Pyxis to the LEDs is not finalized. We have a prototype and from it we are making iterations. The new revision saves us $5 per unit and offers a superior consumer product. This is less of a risk and more of a process improvement.

4. HDCP requires a paperwork process that will not commence until the initial $16,000 is submitted. We have confidence in our ability to incorporate HDCP technology into Pyxis. The larger uncertainty is how long the HDCP application process takes. From initial estimates, it looks to be between 1-3 months.

5. Time is needed for solid QA. This is accomplished with hours of Pyxis provided entertainment. Our QA team is devoted to quality; whether that's Fargo, Strange Brew, Rick and Morty, Tombstone, Spaceballs, The Professional, Blade-runner and more. We will test every device with our approval of empirical certainty. Our main focus, in all honesty, is with displaying a white border and measuring degradation. White light requires the greatest consumption of power and so this will help assess the limits of heat and power deterioration.
